“Get Set” by Licia McDonald is set against Tom Huffman’s ‘On the Verge’ at the KSA Membership Show at the KSA gallery at the Kukui Grove Center.

The show kicked off March 24 and runs through April 14. During that time, the public is invited to go to the KSA Gallery at the Kukui Grove Center and, for a $1 donation, vote for their favorites. “We have very interesting 3D work — we have everything from a giant pig to a dragon and an outrigger canoe made out of ceramic,” Jones said. The winners of the show will be announced on April 7 during a closing reception. First place comes with a $500 prize. Second place is $250 and third is

$100, Jones said. The reception at the KSA Gallery is open to the public. The show has been a staple in the community for at least 30 years, Jones added. “There are some people who remember being a part of the show since the 1970s,” she said. While KSA became a nonprofit in 1983, it was an unofficial group for several years before that, Jones said. The society, which has a membership of about 110, was formed to promote

It’s also a good play on words — you know, ‘Fiery Dragon’ — and dragon fruit is one of the superfoods.” The new mixture earned second-place honors at the 2017 Scovie Awards in Arizona, described as the world’s most competitive fiery foods contest. The 2017 Scovie Awards judging panel of about 90 culinary experts honored Salty Wahine Gourmet Hawaiian Sea Salts in the Unique category with a second-place Global Media Productions Presents honor. ‘Okinawa: The Afterburn’ coming to Kauai KEALIA — John Junkerman, director of “Okinawa: The Afterburn,” will be at Kealia Farm Market on Saturday, April 8 to answer questions and talk story after the free Kauai premier of the documentary. The event is set for 7 to 10 p.m. The award-winning film presents a history of Okinawa from World War II until present day and is narrated in English. The film “conveys the complex postwar fate of Okinawa, an island that has had to live side-by-side with an extensive array of US bases,” according to a news release about the film. An explanation of the recent resistance to a plan to build a U.S. base at Henoko and the controversy surrounding it will also be part of the presentation and is woven throughout the film. This film depicts the 1945 April battle through the eyes of Japanese and American soldiers who fought each other on the same battlefields, along with Okinawa civilians who were swept up in the fighting, with carefully selected footage from the US National Archives, according to the release. Kealia Farm Market is across from the north end of Kealia Beach in Kapaa and the film will be under the covered pavilion area.

NAHOLA — Ka Hale Pono, in partnership with the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the County of Kauai, and the Department of Hawaiian Homes Land, celebrated not only the birth of Prince Jonah Kuhio, but the late Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Moses Keale. The grounds of the Anahola Beach Park bristled with activity of traditional Hawaiian games, bounce houses with welcome water features, and activities including the traditional konani game and tops created from kukui nuts to keep keiki and adults occupied as the protocol of dignitaries presenting their acknowledgements to Keale’s family occupied the stage. An offering of crafters and entertainment from community schools, hula halau, and musical ensembles completed the scene cemented by the aroma of food that served as fundraisers for community organizations. Celebrations of Kuhio’s birthday continue at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, the Koloa Landing, and at the Prince Kuhio Park where the celebration hosted by the Royal Order of Kamehameha starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.
