“Carnival” takes the audience to France in the 1920s and follows the comingof-age story of an orphan girl who joins the circus and finds romance. It’s the tale of people looking for love and searching for a sense of home, and of people who have been roughed up by life. “These characters have a little bit of damage to their psyche, but I think we can all relate,” said Greg Shepherd, director. Shepherd said he’s been waiting to produce this particular musical for just the right combination of voices and timing, and he thinks he’s hit gold.

“It’s a good musical for solid voices and it’s a real challenge for the actors,” Shepherd said. “Plus, it’s wholesome for families without insulting the audience’s intelligence.” He said the musical is full of witty humor and the character development delivers the portrayal of real human beings with real problems and real lives to the stage. “It’s been a challenge to create that chemistry of real life and of people’s interactions in this musical,” Shepherd said. “It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been fun for the most part.” The last musical to grace the stage from KCC was “Man of La Mancha” in 2008. “Musicals take a huge amount of time and effort with the orchestra and the voices, as well as the rest of the performance,” Shepherd said. “We had to wait until the right time.” This time around,

THERE’S NO FORGETTING MUSIC BY KAUAI CHORALE K

W

hen you attend a Kauai Chorale concert, you know the music will be terrific. You know the singing will be outstanding. You know the accompanist and the musicians will be excellent. And you know you’ll leave humming and smiling and looking forward to their next performance. Sure enough, that’s how it went for the group’s spring concert Saturday at the Kauai Performing Arts Center and Sunday at the St. Regis Hotel Ball. “Music is Forever” was every good as one could expect. Nearly 80 powerful voices sharing the spotlight. They poured their hearts and soul into each and every tune, from the opening number, “Let There Be Music!” to “Oceans” to “Over the Rainbow” to the closing number, “Don’t let the Music Stop.” Directed by Lois Ricciardi, these shows were bright, fun, lively and entertaining, 90 minutes of delightful songs, each with a twist to give it a sound and perspective unlike any versions before it. It never dragged. Never reached a point where you wondered if they were done. Just a crisp, engaging evening. But it was the unexpected, per-

haps what you might call the little things, that gave these performances a bit of magic. Let’s start with the guys moving the chairs. You had to be there, but who would have ever thought three or four men setting up a few chairs and stands for musicians, or removing them for dancers between some songs, could gain such applause and become a fan favorite. Each time they rose, with

some hints from Ricciardi (“Guys?”) the crowd chuckled. Great fun. And then there was the dance. That’s right, the dance. Tim and Marsha Bradley were sure and light on their feet during their moves around the floor to “Sway.” It was simple, sweet and beautiful. And the kiss at the end, the stuff that makes even the coldest of hearts melt. Speaking of dancing, the hula

by Darlene Kaui to “Beautiful Kauai” was mesmerizing and Kaui got the curtain call she deserved. And then, there was the goodbye to Derrick Vander Meulen, Kauai Chorale president, who is leaving the island. Derrick is also a Baptist pastor and he’s been called to a new church. He and his wife, Debbie were also soloists for “Beautiful Kauai.” Derrick has been a wonderful addition to Kauai, and he will be

missed. He will bring smiles — and music — wherever he goes. The farewell he and Debbie received, along with the leis, was heartfelt. Finally, kudos to Ricciardi. She’s the perfect director for Kauai Chorale. Genuine and joyful, her easy demeanor brings out the best of each singer and it’s easy to see they were having the best of times. Yes, let there be more music from Kauai Chorale. Lots.

AN APP COMES TO LIFE IN ‘THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE’

I

t’s hard not to have a few biases going into “The Angry Birds Movie .” In the most cynical view of what gets made in Hollywood, an addictive app might just be at the bottom of the pile, languishing there in suspicious squalor with movies adapted from board games and amusement park rides. Comic books get away with the “it’s really about characters” justification. Even some video games have an essential story behind them. A puzzle game, though? You can’t even pretend. The clever ones use this starting point as a blank slate on which to create something that is maybe cool, unexpected, or just not terrible. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are the current masters of this, implausibly crafting compelling stories out of the bleakest source material. “The Angry Birds Movie” doesn’t quite achieve the relative superiority of “The Lego Movie,” but it’s definitely not terrible and even

surprisingly fun and heartfelt at times. It’s the directorial debut of veteran animator Clay Kaytis (“Frozen,” ”Tangled”) and storyboard artist Fergal Reilly (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” ”The Iron Giant”), who are working off a script from “The Simpsons” alum Jon Vitti. The concept is simple: how did the angry birds get so angry? The short answer is they’re not angry by nature, more by circumstance. And at first, the angry ones are sort of the outcasts of this happy, bright little society of flightless birds and endless avian puns (“pluck my life”). The story is centered on Red (Jason Sudeikis), a loner bird who is consistently aggravated by the minor inconveniences and annoyances of life on Bird Island — like someone sneezing close to his popcorn, or a kid kicking a ball against his house. His bad luck and short temper land him in group therapy for an-

pesky pigs. Red is suspicious of their intentions, but everyone else is buying the snake oil. It’s only when the pigs abscond with the town’s unhatched eggs that the masses realize they’ve been had. The beginning is definitely the strongest, as we explore the humor and oddities of Bird Island and its quirky inhabitants. It starts to go downhill when the pigs arrive, although there is a fairly enjoyable diversion when Red, Chuck and Bomb go off in search of the mythical Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) for help. By the final showdown, the plot has lost most of its narrative steam, but that’s more a disclaimer for the parents than the tots who will likely delight in the unruliness. Ultimately, “The Angry Birds Movie” does a decent job exploring the merits of anger. It’s no “Inside Out,” but it has heart and life, which isn’t too shabby for any film — app or not.

ger management alongside some other volatile types like the manic Chuck (Josh Gad), the dimwitted Bomb (Danny McBride), and the bruiser Terence (whose grunts are supposedly the work of Sean Penn — an even more dubious distinction than Vin Diesel as Groot). And they all try to work through their issues with the free spirit instructor Matilda (Maya Rudolph). Meanwhile, some pigs arrive by ship.

Even typing that sentence feels about as inorganic as the actual plot development, but, “Angry Birds” has to get to a place where the birds are fighting pigs, so why not make it a colonialization parable? At first it’s just a few pigs, led by Leonard (Bill Hader) — they’re fun and have gadgets and fire and party supplies. Then more come and then even more, and suddenly Bird Island is overrun by

CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

“J

ewish Pirates of the Caribbean!” A new Mel Brooks movie starring Johnny Depp, right!? Well … no. This surprisingly wonderful book is a historical account of “how a generation of swashbuckling Jews carved out an empire in the New World in their quest for treasure, religious freedom — and revenge!” See? Already wanting to learn more, yeah? We did, too! Author Edward Kritzler brings to light a mostly unknown part of history that is intriguing right from the start of the title. In fact, truth be told, we weren’t even aware of this book until a customer came into our bookstore and asked for it by name. We thought he was kidding, but to our surprise we found the book and now it is a book we feature regularly, with everyone just as surprised and fascinated by it as we were. So, who were these renegade Jews? Where did they come from, and when did they sail the high seas? During the Spanish Inquisition in the fifteenth century, Jews were being exterminated by the droves (yes, genocide of the Jews was a very, very old European tradition, not just a 20th century horror). As they fled the Iberian Peninsula, some found refuge in the man-

made floating islands of the sea: the sailing ship. As outlaws, some even formed their own collectives, with vessel names such as “King Solomon” and “Queen Esther,” as they strove to survive by outwitting and plundering the Spanish fleets that they encountered. Their footholds in the Caribbean, where they made the most of their landbased opportunities, gave them the ability to form tenuous alliances with rival European powers in order to secure freedom for other Jews who wanted to escape the oppression in the Old World. Who would’ve thought? Edward Kritzler did! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

WALKING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

W

hat a rousing way to wake up Saturday morning! A vigorous zumba warmup led by Anna Velasco, the familiar strains of KQNG Radio’s Ron Wiley and they’re off! More than 1,700 walkers took off on a nearly three-mile loop around Lihue, starting and ending at the Historic County Building, to raise $250,000 to

support Kauai’s nonprofits and charities. The Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, Kauai Chapter, led by Christina Gabriel of the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club, hosted the 38th annual walk around town greeted at the end by breakfast prepared by some of the island’s finest resorts. These culinary whizzes got

help from Kauai Community College, which dispersed culinary arts students into the food tents and nursing students throughout the aid stations along the course. George Thronas of the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa served as this year’s walk chairman, turning the reins over to Jim Braman of Castle Resorts for next year’s event.
