t seems the words “high maintenance do not exist in Solomon King’s world. The Los Angeles-based blues musician has been taking it easy on Kauai’s sandy beaches since 1983. “It’s a real magical place for me, said King, who is getting ready for two upcoming concerts. He will be performing Saturday 9 p.m. at Trees Lounge in Kapaa. He also performs 9:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the TR Grill at Tortilla Republic, in Poipu. “Because the venues are smaller, I can get really personal and involved with the audience, King said. “Plus, I get to use local musicians. And that intimate connection with his fans is not bound to the stage. He is happy to meet with fans he runs into on the

beach, while swimming or roaming around town. In fact, he said he will take up any invitation that involves getting out onto the water. “If anyone is fishing ahi and wants to take me along, anyone with a skiff and wants to go swimming with the dolphins, contact me, he said, laughing. While King criss-crosses the globe performing his music — favorite locations include Australia, New York City and Chicago — he often comes to Hawaii to perform (his last performance on Kauai was four months ago), thanks to a serendipitous meeting with local promoter Kat Kling. “I met her one day on the beach, and that’s how it all kind of got started. It isn’t surprising that King, a Grammy Award nominee, finds

inspiration for his music on the Islands. The up-tempo track “Country Songâ€? was inspired by Robin Rogers, who owns a surf shack at Aliomanu Beach. “I tend to write quite a bit while I’m in Hawaii,â€? King said. “It’s such a magical place ‌ I love to swim, but I can only swim for so long. So when I’m done, I barbecue fish and island beef, and when I’m done with that, I pick up a guitar and start singing and writing songs.â€? King said he is certain his upcoming Kauai concerts will feature songs from his new album, “Train,â€? but “I never know what I’m playing until I’m playing. I draw 80 percent of my material from one of my albums, and 20 percent is blues cover songs.â€? Like many musicians, King’s fans are what keep him going.

ANDREA FRAINIER TGIFR!DAY

“That’s the whole reason I play, he said. “It’s all about creating an energy together. Fans will have a chance to see King before he “kicks things up in the fall — the blues musician expects to embark on a tour in support of the new album. Until then, he’s counting down the days until he’s on island. “I can’t wait to be back, King said. “There’s no place like Kauai in the whole world, and I’ve traveled the world. Admission is free to both shows, and there is a promotion on King’s website: Contact King and receive 50 percent off his CD. J’s Steak & Seafood is a destination restaurant for any occasion, and it’s a special treat when the O Ke Kai (From the Sea) Catch of the Day is the white fish delicacy Monchong. The anticipation is strong that the fish will be a far sight better than a breaded flounder with the $29 price tag. Whether its an ahi (tuna) or hebi (spearfish), the optional broiled, sautÊed or Cajun preparation of fresh fish doesn’t disappoint. Then add in the choice of rice pilaf, steamed white or brown rice, or a baked potato. The dinner includes a trip to the salad bar with Kauai-grown vegetables and fruits and hot rolls. A rare treat, such as last Sunday, is when the fishermen bring in Mongchong. The Hawaii Seafood Council

lists Monchong as two varieties of deep water fish, sickle and lustrous pomfret, or its scientific name, Taractichthys steindachneri. They are sometimes caught with tuna and the restaurants and fish markets don’t see them near as often as other fish. “It is a special one,â€? said the CJ’s server. Mongchong isn’t carried on the regular menu and they don’t have it very often, she added. It is either special ordered or a Catch of the Day item when the fishermen net them on runs between Kauai and the Big Island. CJ’s serves it with a special sauce, sautĂŠed in white wine, with garlic, mushrooms and butter. The fish has a high oil content, which makes it good to grill.

ubble tea and smoothies are carried by several places around the island these days, but Kauai Boba Drink is about the only one to serve the drinks exclusively. The store offers powder-based juice, milk tea and real fruit smoothies or boba (bubble tea) drinks, along with tapioca “pearl balls, shave ice and jam flavorings, with toppings that include jelly, popping boba and mini mochi. Xia Mei (Joyce) Yu is a native of China and moved to Kauai three years ago. She opened Kauai Boba Drink seven months ago and said this is her first business and finds it to be a good fit for tropical Kauai. “I like this one because here it is hot and more people like the boba drink, Yu said. “Business is doing OK, not too bad.

“Mongchong is a white, mild fish with a texture similar to a lobster,â€? she said. The sauce enhances everything about the tender fish. It was developed by former CJ’s head cook David Nyberg. He now owns and operates Hanalei Markets, according to CJ’s Manager Renie Bauder. “He was our original sautĂŠ sauce guy,â€? she said. “We also have a wonderful salad bar and food that is consistent and in good portions, which is important to us.â€? Bauder has worked at the restaurant for the

Kauai Boba Drink has a real fruit smoothie option for $4.25. The choices include avocado, mango, peach, honeydew, papaya, pineapple, blueberry, banana, strawberry and kiwi. The juice drinks run $3.75 in 11 varieties, including strawberry, passion fruit, green apple, peach, litchi, mango, kiwi, orange, pineapple, blueberry and honeydew. The milk tea drinks run $3.25 in nine varieties, including original, honeydew, coconut, taro, vanilla, strawberry, banana, mango and papaya. Honey-dew, taro, fresh fruit mango papaya and strawberry are favorites, Yu said. A member coupon offers a free drink after 10 stamps. Kauai Boba Drink is located at 3-3122 Kuhio Highway in Lihue.

past 33 years. It was a Chuck’s Steak House at the time and changed names at the end of a 25-year lease in 2003. The restaurant changed hands with the new lease and became CJ’s, with new owners Jeff Powers and his partner Craig Schafer. “We just celebrated our first 10 years this past December, Bauder said. CJ’s sits just south of the Princeville Center at 5-4280 Kuhio Highway, Princeville. It offers a lunch and dinner menu, a complete bar and also serves dessert.

Guns? Please. There are enough guns in this movie to arm a small country. Maybe a medium-sized one. There are plenty of jokes in “2 Guns, this summer’s latest variation on the buddy-cop theme, starring the engaging duo of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. But one of the funniest things about it is that title. Bullets fly every few seconds. By the end, it’s impossible to count how many people have died; it’s much easier to count who’s still alive. And that’s a shame, because ultimately the bang-bang in “2 Guns, directed by Baltasar Kormakur, becomes so tiresome that you forget what should be the main focus of the film: The appealing, easy chemistry between the leads. What should have been an entertaining two hours with this charismatic pair becomes a somewhat exhausting affair that might more aptly be called “Boys and Their Toys. And permit us here to express some nostalgia for a recent buddy-cop movie that also had chemistry between its stars: “The Heat, with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. If they could carry a laugh-filled action film without frequent helpings of violence and torture, why can’t the men? The script, written by Blake Masters and based on the BOOM! Studios graphic novels by Steven Grant, is complicated — perhaps unnecessarily so. We begin with Bobby (Washington) and Stig (Wahlberg) plotting a small-town bank robbery, each believing the other to be a disposable criminal, and each trying for his own reasons to seize the loot of drug lord Papi Greco (an excellent Edward James Olmos). They soon discover that instead of the couple million bucks they were expecting to find, there’s upward of $40 million in the bank. To whom does it belong? Well, wait, because first we

need to tell you that each man also learns the other’s real identity. Bobby, you see, is a DEA agent. And Stig? Navy intelligence. Both are now on the run, pursued by a shady character, Earl, who says the money’s his and wants it back (Bill Paxton, amusingly sleazy). Earl, who’s always surrounded by henchmen, has an unnerving interrogation method: it’s called Russian Roulette. But it’s not only Earl who’s after the duo: Stig is persona non grata with the Navy now, after running afoul of a corrupt boss (James Marsden, his usual charm untapped in this role). In short, the boys are in all kinds of trouble, and we haven’t even told you about Bobby’s girlfriend, Deb (Paula Patton), who also works for the DEA and loves Bobby, but might be dating somebody else who ALSO might be big trouble. Confused? Well, at least you’ll find yourself laughing often at the WashingtonWahlberg banter. These guys are funniest doing little things, like quibbling over how much you should tip a waitress — just after they’ve set a huge fire to the diner she works in and the place is about to blow. Or discussing their relationship — Stig’s the touchy-feely one, hoping, he says, for an “Ebony and Ivory sort of union. He wants to work “together. Bobby wants to work “in the same area code. But for each amusing exchange, there’s a gratuitous scene that dampens the proceedings. One of the worst involves the torture of chickens. Yes, that’s what we said. There’s also a juvenile obsession with male private parts, and guns aimed at said private parts. It all ends in an orgiastic shootout, of course. Will there be a sequel? Well, we’d like to see more of Washington and Wahlberg together. Hey, maybe they could join McCarthy and Bullock in THEIR sequel?

poradic passing rain showers and high tide conditions may have put a damper on some beach activities last weekend, but it did little to rain on this year’s annual Hawaii Sand Castle Art and Sculpture Festival in Hanalei. The annual one-day festival and workshop, now in its fourth year, shattered previous attendance records as nearly 500 people in 85 teams gathered on the beach next to the Hanalei Pier for a creative day of fun. In all, contestants were given four hours to create a sand castle or sculpture on almost any subject. New tweaks to this year’s competition included a new political statement and word carving category. The sand art was later judged by Kauai artisans Kathy Cowen and Wayne Zebzda on several criterias, including age, artistic creativity, originality and complexity.
