Comedy hypnosis show Saturday

nxiety, stress and the daily grind are things that weigh most folks down, even on a beautiful tropical island. So why not experience Hawaii in a different way through laughs and with no worries, said hypnotist and improviser Ron Soderstrom. The Comedy Hypnosis Show “Welcome to Paradise” at the Lihue Parish Hall is Soderstrom’s solution and will “allow yourself to be in the moment,” he said. Doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. “I wanted to take people on a vacation on the mind as their tour guide,” Soderstrom said. “I am taking them to paradise. Bringing my guests onto stage and letting them have the vacation of their life.” Hypnosis is a great to relieve tension and release stress all while laughing, he said. “Hypnosis is an intense

state of focus where all distractions are eliminated and you can simply be in the present moment free of stress and anxiety,” Soderstrom said. That’s when the fun starts. The Comedy Hypnosis Show is a mix of life coaching and improvisational comedy. Soderstrom said improv teaches people how to live in the moment and to release the nervousness and tension, which can be liberating. “When people come on the stage, I am able to help them to get focus,” he said. “Now the people who come out on stage, I never drag

them on stage. You only want people who want to have fun. Now those people already have that in their mind that they want to enjoy themselves. Now it’s just a matter of getting past that little edge, that little bit of nervousness.” Soderstrom said he’ll help guide audience members through skits. It’s family event, one in which he acts as a tour guide the whole way, guiding them through their subconscious and allowing them to enjoy the moment, not the past nor the future. Before moving to Kauai, Soderstrom was a professional skateboarder. He was pretty broken before he decided to heal himself through hypnosis and life coaching. Now, he said he helps others through his wellness and performance coaching. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children five and under. Info: www.ronstroderstromcoaching.com

The story focuses on her isolation from the outside world and the numerous suitors that seek her hand. Among them is Kauai chief ‘Aiwohikupua (played by Ioane Goodhue), who brings his Maile sisters,

Eventually, a bond of sisterhood is formed between them that will help them weather the seemingly insurmountable challenges ahead. states a release. The show will be performed in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, that is, the Hawaiian language, and marks a turning point for the people of Hawaii and of Hawaiian ancestry. Touring this production to Kauai is a homecoming for Baker who is originally from Kapaa and a Kapaa High School graduate. Her academic work focuses on the revitalization of Hawaiian language and culture, particularly in the realm of theatre. “I am very excited to bring this production home to share with my community, family and friends,” Baker said. “Kauai plays a major La‘ieikawai (Kau’i Kaina) and her grandmother Waka (Kameha’ililani Waiau). role in this story and through our performance we hope to honor the island and the places that they Hālau Hanakeaka, a Hawaiian the individuals in this story who once roamed.” medium theatre troupe whose are genealogically connected to Baker is a co-founder of Ka productions have toured inter-

nationally and throughout the Hawaiian archipelago. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes many minds and sets of knowledge to stage a production. As specialization was practiced in traditional Hawaiian society, a cadre of kumu, or teachers/experts, contribute their expertise as collaborators on this groundbreaking production. “The most difficult thing about assembling a cast of 30-plus is the logistics, creating time for everyone to be in the same space to rehearse. We also are very fortunate to work with highly skilled kumu, balancing everyone’s calendars is one of the more challenging things to do in the rehearsal process,” Baker said.
This production is sponsored by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, The Cultural Conservatory, and the Halelea Arts Foundation. “The easiest thing in this process will be jumping on the plane this Thursday because when we get on that plane I’ll have a peace of mind that our cargo has been packed and sent, we are prepared to perform, and everyone will be together ready to share Lā‘ieikawai’s journey with the people of Kauai,” Baker added. Tickets for “Lā‘ieikawai” are available at the door or the KCC Performing Arts Center box office. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 with student ID. That’s because the garden party that’s happening on Saturday is a chance to get down and dirty, not the traditional tea on the green. “We’re going to be setting up a composting system, expanding some of the garden beds so there’s more space for food production, and putting in some mulching beds and trees,” said Megan Fox, director of operations for Malama Kauai. garden at the Kawaikini Public Charter School in Lihue, one of four Hawaiian Immersion schools on the island. The school doesn’t have a food program so the plan is help supply those meals through the garden. “So, we’re starting up this school garden especially for high school students to learn about agriculture as a career pathway and at the same time, generating produce for school lunches,” Fox said. The garden, which is about half an acre, was started in November and is accompanied by a small orchard. Since its inception, Malama Kauai has been holding monthly workshop sessions with information on gardening.
Volunteers wanted to get down and dirty on Saturday “The last one we had was on the different Hawaiian varieties of bananas and how to grow them,” Fox said. “Then we planted several different varieties on the school campus.” As a bonus for Saturday’s garden party, anyone who RSVPs can get in on the free compost bin giveaway. “So, people that come can take a compost bin home and watch a video about composting and learn about it,” Fox said, “but if you want a compost bin, you have to RSVP so we know how many to bring.” Everyone is invited to the garden party and Fox said she usually invites a lot of the kids at Kawaikini Public Charter School. “It’s just the community getting together to make improvements on the school garden,” Fox said. “We encourage parents to come out and bring their kids and we’ll give the garden a spring uplift before we get into the spring/ summer school session.” Volunteers will be fed at a community potluck.
