on April 9, where the glee club will be presenting “Kulaiwi: Our Home,” a multi-faceted performance experience showcasing Hawaii’s culture. “There will be dancing, storytelling, narration and everything in between,” Hosaka SEE GLEE, PAGE 6

t was the love of adventure that prompted mural artist Seth Womble to put his paintbrush to use on large-scale pieces that now decorate private homes and public places all over the world. Now Womble, who is moving into his new Hana-
pepe home, has around five murals and a few other art pieces painted on Kauai and countless worldwide. You can find Womble’s murals at Banyon Harbor, in private residences and Bubbles Below dive shop in Eleele, and shops throughout the island.

“I traveled by myself to Costa Rica for some surfing and I went with only $300 in my pocket and the flexibility to stay for a while,” Womble said. He ended up painting a portrait of Bob Marley on the side of a bungalow as a way to scrape together some cash. He ended up making enough money to fund three months in the country — with some to spare. “I was 17 or 18 and I had to use powdered pigments to get the colors I wanted,” Womble said. “I didn’t have a paint brush, so I ended up using the corner of a foam bed mattress to paint the whole thing.” He was looking into marine biology as a course of study, but Womble said instead of going back to Califor-
nia and Florida, where he grew up, he found himself in Australia. For the next 10 years, the artist bounced between Australia and Southeast Asia, mainly Thailand, working as a scuba instructor and painting whatever murals he could land. During that time he also became a student at Southern Cross University in Australia, where he studied sculpture and art. “I wanted to paint but it turned out they had a full studio,” Womble said. “I was told to take sculpting and I would have access to all the art studios and the space to work on whatever I wanted.” So that’s what he did and now Womble weaves his knowledge of 3D creation into his 2D murals.
“I want to put some depth and distance in my work, so there’s 3D aspects to my painting,” Womble said. From Australia, Womble hopped over to Kauai, where he knew no one. “I had no reason to come here, but I’d checked off all the other islands and I ended up getting a job with Fathom Five dive shop,” Womble said. These days, Womble paints full time and teaches art classes with Kauai Underground Arts in Kalaheo. He also hosts an open mic night on Tuesdays starting at 8 p.m. at Bangkok Happy Bowl in Poipu. “It’s something I don’t mind doing, especially if it brings people Photo taken by Seth Womble together for community events,” Seth Womble takes a break from the early stages of painting at Hanai, Kojimas. Womble said.

WHY CAT ART MATTERS CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
C
ats, like people, are diverse, each with their own personality and yet it is only in recent times that art aficionados have put forth their distinguished skills to record and document a thorough examination of the vibrant and diverse creativity of Felis catus (nom de plume of domestic cat). The multitude of forms that exist in the infinitely expressive field of art are echoed equally in the realm of the feline. Busch and Silver’s groundbreaking work examines several of the artists, their works, their lifestyles, and perhaps most importantly their philosophy that underlies the heart and core of their art.
Continued from page 3
Some dabble in the medium of painting, be it acrylic or oil, using their paws as brushes for a truly visceral experience, while others explore the avant-garde realm of creative-destructivism, using ordinary objects as the canvas itself and selectively (and metaphorically) revealing what lies beneath the surface. Some, truly the cutting-edge, have chosen to express their art as a duo, melding their unique views into a coherent and indefatigable summoning of creativity. Viewing their works will astound even the casual viewer. In addition, the authors include fascinating history on feline expression dating from ancient Egyptian art, medieval illuminations, and more. This unprecedented and rarely recorded sub-field finally has been given the recognition that it fully deserves. “Why Cats Paint” answers the long-awaited question of the impor-

tance of feline work in the cultural lexicon of great art. “Why Cats Paint” is beyond all measure the singular book that legitimizes feline art as being in the same caliber of even the great masters. said. “We’re all from different islands, and you’re going to hear stories of what our homes mean to us.” Hosaka is this year’s president of the 80-member strong Kamehameha Concert Glee Club. She said the group has been working on the show since the beginning of the 2015 school year. “Everyone has been teaching us about certain songs that will benefit our concert and now, in this last month, we’re blocking our whole show,” Hosaka said. “It’s taken the whole school year to put this together.” Within the concert glee club, there are roughly eight kids that are from Kauai and each of those kids will have a piece of the spotlight. “We’ll feature a few of our own island kids and that’ll be pretty fun,” Hosaka said. “The whole thing is songs of our homeland and the concert is interactive — the audience will get a sense of every island.” Hosaka has been part of the glee club for the past five years and said usually students audition for the group at the end of their freshman year. Then those students that are accepted are in the group throughout the rest of their time in high school. Involvement in the club actually comes with a performing arts credit, so those who get into the group take glee club as a class. Girls and boys take separate classes, Hosaka said, which makes learning complicated choral pieces a challenge. “We all learn our music separately in our own respective classes and then we put it together in rehearsals once a week,” Hosaka said. “So it’s unique because of all of our choral arrangements.” Kamehameha Concert Glee Club travels annually throughout the globe on tours and Hosaka has performed in places like New Zealand during her involvement in the group. “It’s been a while since Concert Glee came to Kauai for a tour,” Hosaka said. “It’s really exciting.”

STROLLING TO FIGHT MS
E
d Kawamura literally lost the sole of his shoes, walking with more than 200 walkers who came out for the Walk MS, or on Kauai, Sunset Stroll Saturday at Ke Ala Hele Makalae, or the Kapaa multi-use path. Walk MS connects people living with multiple sclerosis and those who care about them. 5Mary Kay Hertog said the reason why we do the
sunset stroll is because people with MS are sensitive to the sun so by walking in the evening, the event affects them less. The Kauai group raised more than $44,000 toward its goal of $60,000. Candice Schwalbach, director of the National MS Society, Pacific South Coast Chapter, Hawaii office, said there will be more opportunities for Kauai to reach its target.
