‘Little Shop,’ big show

K

auai Community Players opens its 2017 season tonight with the beloved sci-fi musical comedy, “Little Shop of Horrors” by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. In this hilarious musical smash, Seymour and Audrey find love while Seymour tries to keep Audrey II, a people-eating plant in the flower shop where he works, satisfied. Little Shop of Horrors won the 1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. Director Rebecca Hanson, who was in Little Shop of Horrors in college, believes this will be a terrific show. Photo by Liz Hahn “What’s really interesting about this show, it’s a really upbeat musi- Little Shop of Horrors cast includes, from left, Kenna Shafter, Jenne Cedusky and Daphne Sanches as cal but what’s hidden underneath all that fun music is this plant who Chiffon, Ronette and Crystal, the not-so-Greek chorus. reflects the devil and gets this very innocent man to perform grisly tasks,” she said. Seymour is a character who is in constant conflict, at a constant crossroads. “He wants love, he wants success, he wants to be happy, and he has this little devil on his shoulder getting him to do things,” Hanson said. “For me, it’s really making sure that’s accentuated. We have to understand, this is a man-eating plant and sometimes, we forget that in the show.” The play satirizes many different topics, including science fiction, “B” movies, musical comedy, and the Faust legend (in which a man sells his soul to the Devil). In his music, Menken used many of the musical styles of the early 1960s, including rock and roll, doowop, and Motown. KCP’s production, under the leadership of Hanson and Nina Saraos as musical director, features an outstanding cast. It includes Billy Quebido as Seymour, Jessika Montoya as Audrey and Arnold Meister as Mr. Mushnik, the shop owner. Montoya said the show is spectacular and the talent of the cast and crew, amazing. INTIMATE NIGHT O

I

f you don’t mind leaving a restaurant feeling heavier than when you arrived, and your wallet feeling lighter than it was, Gaylord’s restaurant at Kilohana is the place to go for an intimate meal. When my girlfriend came to visit from Oahu this past weekend, I wanted to take her somewhere quiet enough to hold a conversation but had an atmosphere that didn’t feel like I was in a ghost town. When I DAVID MCCRACKEN first moved TGIFR!DAY to Kauai a little over three months ago, I kept hearing about Gaylord’s and how they have the best mai tai cocktail on the island.

Coming from Oahu, where I lived in the heart of Honolulu and had easy access to bars and various restaurants, I would politely nod and say, “yeah, I’m sure they do,” not taking the claim seriously. So after booking a reservation for two and getting a table on the edge of the courtyard, adjacent to the stage area where live performances are held, my expectations were high. I wasn’t disappointed. When I took my first sip out of Gaylord’s 1944 mai tai recipe, I was sold. My girlfriend enjoyed hers, but felt it was a little too strong for her liking. But at the end of the day, that’s the point, right?

Gaylord’s restaurant at Kilohana is the perfect spot for a date night

For the quality of food on the menu, the prices are reasonable. But prepare for the bill to add up after ordering cocktails, which were in the ballpark of $11-14. We started with the Island Caprese, which went for $14. The avocado and buffalo mozzarella complimented the basil and vanilla bean balsamic syrup very well. It wasn’t a very heavy dish, which was a good thing since both of our entrees were more filling than we expected. I ordered the Oven Roasted Half Chicken which came with garlic whipped potatoes, asparagus, shallots on a bed of herb and white wine butter sauce. The presentation of the food almost made it look too good to eat, but the smell of the garlic and the tenderness of the chicken was almost too tempting

to even wait for my girlfriend to take a picture. She ordered the Red Wine Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs, which melted in your mouth. The ribs also came with the same side dishes as my meal. The ribs were cooked perfectly. My dish went for $25 and hers went for $27, but seeing as we had to box up our dinners to go and couldn’t bear the thought of ordering dessert without collapsing, we had no complaints. Add in the ambiance, the live piano music, a friendly staff that refilled our drinks and checked on us throughout the night, the dinner was worth every penny. Gaylord’s was more than a romantic night out, it was an experience that I am eager to have again.

She is confident the audience will be “completely and utterly entertained. They’re going to laugh, they might cry. But it’s not real sad. It’s like a funny sad. It’s a satire on musical theater. It’s beautiful. Wonderful people telling a beautiful story.” Meister, who has had a legendary career in theater, said working with this cast has been a treat. “Jessika is very talented. She has a wonderful singing voice,” he said. Meister’s last show he directed for Kauai Performing Arts Theater about 18 years ago before he retired was Little Shop of Horrors. He noted that one of his cast members then was a teenager named Eric Hagan. “Fast forward, Eric Hagan is the dentist (in this show) and I’m in the cast not directing it,” Meister said, smiling. He likes the intimacy of the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse and believes it enhances the show’s experience for guests. “There’s a vibrancy when you’re sitting 10 feet away,” Meister said. “I think that magic of theater is really strong in this show.” Hanson had high praise for Nelli Foster, stage manager, Saraos, and the nine-member cast. Rehearsals started in early November. “It’s a really big show. Nelli has been my right hand woman to get it all done,” she said. “The cast, they’ve been enthusiastic and dedicated from day one. And Nina, I love working with her.” Hanson, who directed Hawaii Children’s Theatre’s Summer After Dark Show “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” is also the director of HCT’s Summer Stars program. She said the audience is sure to love Little Shop of Horrors. “They will laugh, they will be in awe of the technical aspects of the show, the puppetry, the lighting, the set, and hopefully at the end of it all, they’ll have a really great time.” Little Shop of Horrors plays through Jan. 29 with performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m and Sundays at 4 p.m. at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse, 4411 Kikowaena Street, Lihue, across the street from Kauai Community College. This weekend’s shows are sold out. For tickets to remaining shows, go to www.kauaicommunityplayers.org.

UHI — Patsy Fujimoto said Sumiko Fujimoto’s sister’s grandson, Taiki Yokota, was a cadet aboard Nippon Maru. “He’s never been here, and we’ve never met him,” Patsy said. “We came to meet him.” More than 300 people turned out to the luau welcoming the cadets and officers aboard Nippon Maru which docked at Nawiliwili Harbor Friday. “We have an exchange student, Erika Ishiguro who was a cadet on Nippon Maru,” said Ed Kawamura, one of the coordinators of the mochitsuki, or mochi-making for New Year. “She even made one of the kine, or wooden mallets, we’re using, tonight.” Amber McClure flew in from Oahu for the event, explaining that a lot of the officers aboard Nippon Maru sailed with Hokule‘a during the Indian Ocean leg of its worldwide voyage. That led to an emotional reunion among the Hokulea crew who helped during the luau welcoming the visiting Japanese. Nippon Maru left Kauai for Oahu Monday.
