Multiple events celebrate Independence Day
T
he 26th annual Kauai Hospice Concert in the Sky is scheduled 4 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 4 at the Vidinha Stadium Soccer Field from 4 to 9:30 p.m. “We enjoy providing an option for family to be able to get together and celebrate really special moments together,” said Lori Miller, executive director of Kauai Hospice. “It’s a fundraiser and a friend-raiser.” The Independance Day event offers activities for adults and keiki. There will be a fireworks display, live entertainment, delicious grinds and a FunZone for kids, which has a large inflatable playground with water slides and face painting. Entertainers include John Cruz, Brother Noland, and Henry Kapono. Other performancers include Not My First Rodeo, Tsunami Taiko and Kapaa High School’s JROTC. “Being Kauai’s largest single day event, this gives us the opportunity to really focus on increasing awareness of the hospice,” Miller said. For those of you aching to roll the dice on the Vegas Strip, there will be drawings for a trip for two to Las Vegas on Alaska Airlines. Advance tickets cost $10 for general admission and $5 for children age 6-12 and can be purchased at Times/ Big Save Markets and the Kauai Hospice office. There will be a Stars and Stripes Freedom Fest celebration from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 3 at the Pacific Missile Range Facility. It will feature live entertainment by The Bootleggers, Ho’aikane, Ekolu and Greenstone Project and headliner Dishwalla, as well as a fireworks display starting at 9:30 p.m., food booths, games and more. Event goers are asked to enter through the south gate entrance at mile marker 29

Jojo’s Anuenue offers a place for students to gain work experience for their future careers. As guests enter Jojo’s shave ice shop, they are greeted with a sweet and fun atmosphere, in addition to a friendly staff.
Hawaii’s version of a snow cone, shave ice is a refreshing syrup-dipped treat. There area a multitude of fun flavors from the exotic lilikoi, mango and banana to cake batter, red velvet and butterscotch. There are three flavors that
can added to shave ice and can have vanilla or macadamia nut ice cream added onto their treats as well. However, the fun doesn’t stop at shave ice. There are also milkshakes, bubble drinks, smoothies, frosties and snow shaves. Shakes come in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry will greet them. Candy, including Twix, Snickers and Butterfinger, can be added to the mix. his week’s book review is “The Curse of Lono” by Hunter S. Thompson. “Bonjour!” from the beautiful city of Paris! This week’s book review is a very different view of Hawaii. Finally, a whole new generation can discover the genius, bordering on insane, writings of the world famous and groundbreaking journalism of Hunter S. Thompson. After having been out of print for decades, Hunter S. Thompson’s venture to the Aloha State, “The Curse of Lono,” has been reprinted, this time by Taschen, a leader in publishing fine high-quality archival art books. Thompson’s strange Hawaiian
wound in a frenzy of craziness, often with shady characters that were somehow related to the event he was writing about. This style of his is what has now come to be called “gonzo journalism”— his trademark style. Hunter Thompson was perhaps one of the most unusual journalists to come from the 20th century and still is unmatched in its time.
