MAGIC OF MESSINA

Singer, producer excited to return to Hawaii

J

im Messina has fond memories of Hawaii. He first came to the Aloha State in 1972 when he performed in Maui as member of Loggins and Messina, a pop-rock group. One town in particular struck a chord with the singer. “I fell in love with Lahaina, it was a great artist community,” Messina said. “It was

just heaven.” Messina is back on tour and will be playing at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Jan. 21 Lahaina was also where Messina had his first experience with centipedes. “I had never seen one before, and one ran across my feet,” he said. “It scared the living daylights out of me.”

That experience inspired him to write a song, “Lahaina,” which talked about the beauty of Maui, but focused on his centipede scare. In one of the verses, Messina sings about the Lahaina lifestyle and mangoes, but is quick to say, “but the centipede he crawls all over your feet.” Loggins and Messina re-

the garden. If you get there early enough, you can unwind with a glass of wine or a craft cocktail and watch the sun set over the ocean while enjoying a basket of fresh bread or an appetizer of peppered beef carpaccio — garnished with a currant reduction, black olives, pickled shallot, greens and capers. While the staples generally stay the same, Chef Cary Roy said he changes the menu daily in pursuit of the best tasting dishes. “We strive for the freshest ingredients,” Roy said. “We grow our greens hydroponically here on the property — we converted a tennis court to do it. So our greens are grown here on the property and we bring in as many local ingredients as possible.” True to its Italian heritage,

the restaurant serves pastas like their pesto gnocchi, which features parmesan gnocchi with a fig reduction, basil pesto and oven dried heirloom tomatoes. It’s topped with a fried duck egg and buratta. The menu branches out from pasta with veal osso buco and grilled cioppino, which is a combination of tristan lobster and caledonian shrimp, on a bed of pasta covered in a spicy saffron tomato broth. Roy and his team make every one of their dishes sing with ingredients that stand out and tastes that are well balanced, but that’s just half of their job. Presentation is everything at Dondero’s. “You eat with your eyes first,” said Roy, who initially went to school as a visual

artist before diving into the culinary realm. “The food should look so good you don’t want to eat it.” The masterpieces Roy and his team create satisfy all the senses — from the mouthwatering smell of the local fresh catch to the golden flakes that accent the chocolate ganache on the hazelnut candy bar. The waiters at Dondero’s will help you with a wine selection to match your dinner order, and for those with special food requirements, Dondero’s has plenty of gluten-free and vegan options that are equally as Grilled cioppino — tristan lobster, caledonian shrimp, scallop, fish, crab, pasta, spicy saffron exquisite. tomato broth. The restaurant is open 6-10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and is closed on Sunday. Call (808) 240-6456 for more information, or to place a reservation.

WE’RE OFF TO READ THE WIZARD CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

“T

here’s no place like home!” When we hear these words, most everyone thinks of Judy Garland as Dorothy clicking her ruby red slippers three times in order to return home from the wild and wonderful world of Oz. Nearly all of us who were brought up under the influence of American culture can identify this phrase immediately — Hawaii included! But, did you know that in the original storybook those iconic ruby red slippers were silver? Yep! They made the movie slippers red because they showed up better on screen

than silver. So, then you might wonder, what else is different in the book? How about that Dorothy wasn’t dreaming? Oz was a real place over the mountains! What?! “The Wizard of Oz” was the first book in a fantastic series of 14 books! The film was based on the just the first book. This means that there is a whole wide world of Oz to explore, with characters and lands just waiting to be discovered! Fortunately for all of us, renown publisher Simon & Schuster has compiled these numerous stories into a five volume series, the first of which we are reviewing, “Oz: The Complete Collection—Volume 1”, contains not only the classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” but includes also the next episodes of the adventure: “The Marvelous Land of Oz” and “Ozma of Oz.” The author, Frank L. Baum,

penned these many stories over a century ago, and yet his imagination was as fertile as any fantasy stories we see today. His rich and creative world has continued to be enjoyed generation after generation, and its thrills and fun are enjoyed by children and adults alike. So take another trip along that yellow brick road, pick up this book, and see what new and undiscovered adventures await you! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are the owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

beach and love of the environment,” Messina said. When Loggins and Messina played in Hawaii, they got a hotel room and would go out to the bars after a performance, Messina said. But those days are over. Now, when Messina travels to Hawaii, he brings his wife and 9-year-old daughter, Josey. “We rent a condo, and Hawaii trips have become a family affair, which is a new experience for me,” the 68-year-old said. “But when you have a family, your life changes.” The concert on Kauai is one of three locations Messina will be playing during his Three Island Tour in Hawaii later this month that also includes performances on Maui and the Big Island. He will be traveling with former band-mate Rusty

Young. “My agent asked me how I would feel about getting engagements in Hawaii, and I said, ‘Go for it,’” he said. Messina, who has been in the music industry for about 50 years, has experience in music production. He was 17 when a deejay asked him to produce an album for two new artists. “I told him I didn’t know much, but I had a one-year apprenticeship with him,” Messina said. In the mid-1960s, Messina was selected to play bass for Buffalo Springfield, a rock band. After the band broke up, Messina joined Buffalo Springfield’s founder, Richie Furray, to form a country-rock band called Poco. After three albums, Messina left the band to devote his time to producing. It was during that time he met Kenny Loggins. The

resulting duo led to nine albums. But Messina will never forget his production roots. “Production and engineering has always been a part of what my craft is,” he said. “Producing music allows you to have full creativity, it’s a blessing that people put the trust in me to deliver.” He likens production to painting. “You have to know what colors will go together and how to put them on the canvas,” he said. “Creating a mix is very similar to that; you have to know how the sounds work.” Messina will be performing at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $45 and Gold Circle tickets are $65. Tickets can be bought online at www. lazarbearproductions.com.
