Joan Osborne hits Kauai July 29 for show at KCC

rowing up in the small town of Anchorage, Kentucky, multi-platinum recording artist Joan Osborne would spend her summers wandering in the woods and singing to the birds. Osborne, who’s know for her hit song, “One of Us,” will wander into another small town community this summer and perform her beautiful and popular hits. “I have never been to Kauai, but I’ve heard so much about it over the years, so I’m very excited,” Osborne said. Osborne will perform an acoustic show with piano player Keith Cotton at Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center on July 29. “It’s going to be a beautiful night of music — Keith and I will give a 100 percent of our heart and soul,” Osborne said. “I’ve been told by many of my fans the music has real healing power and that it lifts people up and gives them courage and it’s also really fun.” The show will highlight piano arrangements of Osborne’s music

ICE AND COCONUTS MO’ BETTA’

A
li Carone was enjoying her first day of work at the LocoCoco Shave Ice trailer parked outside the Kukuiula Store in Poipu. “Ice and coconut mo’ betta,’” she said with a smile that comes with the excitement from the first day of work. Thomas Oliver is the owner of LocoCoco Shave Ice, a custom-made trailer that dispenses local style shave ice in an assortment of flavors, a special LocoCoco in a coconut half shell, cold coconuts, as well as non-shave ice Lip Bliss and Blessed Bee Honey.
“The syrups are all natural,” Oliver said. “I use natural fruit purees, organic sugar, or Kauai Blessed Bee honey. I always wanted to sell something which was 100 percent natural, and now, I have a product I can be proud of.” The regular shave ice comes in a recycleable paper cup with a choice of flavors that includes mango, strawberry, lychee, guava, blood orange, mandarin orange, kalamansi, raspberry, or lime. Ice cream is available as an add-on. Shave ice is also available in a coconut half shell for
additional cost. “We get plenty coconuts,” Oliver said. “I climb for my own coconuts, and there is a lot out there.” Hours for the shave ice truck are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Oliver said he likes being parked in front of Kukuiula Store. “I was born near here and Photo by Dennis Fujimoto we know the Kuribayashi Thomas Oliver of LocoCoco Shave Ice grinds out an order inside his trailer parked in front of family from the time we the Kukuiula Store. were growing up,” he said. “My brother Matthew has two locations! Banandi Creperie opens shop at Ching Young Village in Hanalei
W
hen Kyrylo Babenko moved to Kauai in 2014, he wanted to bring something beautiful to the island. That’s why, last year, he opened Banandi Creperie, an eatery that serves sweet and savory crepes, along with specialty coffee drinks. Babenko moved to the island from Ukraine and brought in professionals from Europe and the Mainland. The business started as a food
truck near the Hanalei Liquor Store. Business grew, and as part of an expansion plan, Babenko recently opened up a brick and mortar location in Ching Young Village in front of the shopping center. He employs four Babenko cooks and four Baristas. “We hired people without experience and helped them to get experience,” he said. “We try
to practice with them a bit to see how the person fits with us.” Popular crepes are the bacon and scrambled egg and the strawberry and banana with Nutella, Babenko said. Ingredients are fresh, organic and come from local farmers. Babenko hopes to expand Banandi Creperie, perhaps in Poipu. “The nearest plan is to open another location on this island and then have one on each of the other islands,” he said.

created by Cotton. Aside from singing, Osborne will play the guitar and some percussion. “We’ll certainly play ‘One of Us.’ That’s the song that most people are familiar with,” Osborne said. “Keith has done a beautiful solo piano arrangement for it. We’ve been performing like that for a little while. I always look out and see people reaching up to wipe the tears away.” Osborne and Cotton started their acoustic show in the northeast, around New York City and Philly. “ I just wanted to have a different kind of show where we can take the tunes that people were used to hearing in a full-band setting and just kind of distilled down to their essence,” she said. Osborne said fans may expect to hear songs from the album, “Relish,” which was recently re-released to celebrate its 20th anniversary, and from her most recent album, “Love and Hate.” “That album is all about romantic relationships and the whole spectrum of what they are — not just the bright, happy love songs but also the more challenging and interesting dramatic
