‘Flame of Thrones’ party to ignite Aston
H
alloween is the time of year for spooks, specters and bags of candy, but for Lambda Aloha member Ross Martineau, Oct. 31 also marks his organization’s spookiest annual event, The Lambda Aloha Halloween Party. On All Hallows Eve, guests 21 and older are invited to enjoy an event that Martineau promises will be a lot of fun, featuring five projectors that will fill the walls and ceilings of the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel ballroom.
Partygoers can meet and greet one another at 7 p.m., then dance the night away until 1 a.m.  “It’s an opportunity to get out of the house and shake your shoes,â€? Martineau said. “Anyone who comes to our parties knows how much fun they are ‌ everyone is invited.â€? Inspired by the popular book series “Game of Thrones,â€? by George R. R. Martin, the party theme “Flame of Thronesâ€? was the brain child of Lambda
Vice President Byron Barth. Although guests may wear any costume of their choice, donning medieval garb would match the theme. A costume contest will award a prize for the best medieval/fantasy costume, Martineau said. Disk jockey Mike Dandurand will provide sound for the festivities. “Our parties allow people to forget about their worries of the day, and the costumes add a level of excitement,â€? said Martineau. Â
Established more than 10 years ago, Lambda Aloha benefits the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community on the island. “We started as a modest beach party and here we are at Aloha Beach with 150-200 attendees, Martineau said. This will be the nonprofit organization’s third annual Halloween party under Haunted Hale. AVERIE SOTO Tickets are $20 per person. TGIFR!DAY Proceeds from the party will benefit the local organization. Party-goers from last years Halloween event.

Home Lands program. That family history may be why the service, food and location are saturated in good old-fashioned aloha. Before opening the juice hale, Contrades-Barrett’s family ran a popular huli huli chicken stand. For 30 years, her mother, Kuini Contrades, made and sold lei during the spring and summer, and now she continues the tradition. Contrades-Barrett’s husband, Lopaka Barrett, is a professional builder who remodeled old buildings on the
property to continue the family’s food legacy. Contrades-Barrett opened the shop in September as an endowment for her sons, Chatson and Kawai. Chatson Barrett, who’s been a private chef for three years, makes coldpressed juices, smoothies, açaí bowls and coffee. His girlfriend, Robyn Curley, is the taste tester who also makes juices and serves customers. “We are making history right now,” says Barrett. “We are the first juice bar in
Anahola to serve all organic ingredients.” Keiki don’t care if it’s healthy, they just think it tastes good. Three white picnic tables with orange umbrellas are tucked alongside the driveway loop. At one, a woman opens her laptop to use the free WiFi while a young mother feeds her diaper-clad son. The only thing that remains of his açaí bowl is a purple O-ring surrounding his mouth. The Next Level açaí bowl ($9.99), boasting 27 grams of protein, contains protein powder, kale and housemade coconut milk. It’s topped with apple bananas from Yoshii Farm in Moloaa, chunks of fresh coconut meat, honey, bee pollen, peanut butter and granola made by Kauai Kunana Dairy. Cold-pressed juice has a jewel-toned color, nice body and exceptional nutrient levels. There are three cold-pressed juices available at Kalalea Juice Hale: Olena ($8.25) with carrots, orange, turmeric and mint; Kale Cure ($8.25) with cucumber, kale, apple, green papaya and lemon; and Beauty in da Beets ($8.25) with beets, apple, ginger and basil.
“Our equipment is expensive and so is organic produce, plus it takes time,” says Barrett, reflecting on the cost of his products. “Because it’s cold-pressed, we are able to extract all of the nutrients, plus beneficial enzymes which help the digestive process.” “Buying local and organic ingredients are important to us,” adds Curley. “We support the local economy by buying local. Plus, we surf, and all the pesticide runoff ends up in the ocean. We also care about the land and the health of the people.” Barrett makes organic shave ice syrups with
whole fruit. You get two flavors for $5.50, which include lilikoi, strawberry, blueberry, mango, lychee, tangerine, lime, dragon fruit, banana and fruit punch. Vanilla ice cream is $1 extra and sweetened condensed milk is .75 cents. Every morning at 5:30 a.m., Barrett cracks the husk off young and old coconuts. Water from young green ones will be used in the O.G. açaí bowl ($8.50). Wrinkled, brown ones have the most meat, which Barrett grates and presses into coconut milk. Fresh coconut milk is added to Kalalea Love
($7.60) a smoothie with strawberries, bananas, peanut butter, cacao nibs and cacao powder. For $1 extra, fresh coconut milk can be added to organic hot coffee ($2), or cold pressed iced coffee ($3.50). “We want to provide the least processed and best ingredients,” says Barrett. “We know it’s local and fresh, so we can’t go wrong!” rrr Marta Lane, a Kauai-based food writer since 2010, offers food tours and is the author of ‘Tasting Kauai: Restaurants — An Insider’s Guide to Eating Well on the Garden Island.’ For more information, visit TastingKauai.com.

REVIEW THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER FRANK SCHECK
‘Book of Life’ celebrates death
I
t’s not surprising that a companion art book to the new animated film directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez and produced by Guillermo del Toro has already been released. Steeped in Mexican folk art and inspired by that country’s holiday the Day of the Dead, “The Book of Life” is a visually stunning effort that makes up for its formulaic storyline with an enchanting atmosphere that sweeps you
into its fantastical world, or in this case, three worlds. Bookended by amusing contemporary segments in which a sassy museum tour guide (Christina Applegate) hosts a group of skeptical school kids, the story concerns the romantic triangle among the free-spirited Maria (Zoe Saldana) and her two suitors: Manolo (Diego Luna), the scion of a long line of bullfighters, who really
wants to be a singer/guitarist; and the vainglorious Joaquin (Channing Tatum), a military hero who struts around with a huge display of medals on his chest. The plot is set in motion by squabbling married gods La Muerta (Kate del Castillo) and Xibabla (del Toro regular Ron Perlman), who make a wager as to which of the two men Maria will choose. La Muerta, the ruler of the Land

of the Remembered, places her bet on Manolo, while Xibabla, who oversees the dark Land of the Forgotten, puts his faith in Joaquin and thinks nothing of exerting his influence to determine the outcome. To that end, he tricks Manolo into thinking that Maria has ventured into the Land of the Remembered, so the love-struck suitor sets off after her. While initially joyful to be introduced to the magical world containing all of his ancestors, Manolo is soon chagrined to discover that Maria is not there and sets off to find La Muerta to help him in his quest, stopping first at the Cave of Souls to consult with the Candle Maker (Ice Cube) who’s in charge of The Book of Life. Meanwhile, the Land of the Living is beset by the villainous monster Chakal (Dan Navarro) and his gang of bandits, with the inevitable battle affecting the destinies of all concerned.
Acerbically commenting on the proceedings from the sidelines is the whiskered, elderly Grandma, hilariously voiced by Grey Griffin. While the screenplay by Gutierrez and Douglas Langdale may prove a little too convoluted for younger viewers, they will surely be swept up by the magical visuals depicting the three worlds and their — literally, not figuratively — wooden inhabitants (Tatum’s Joaquin is, again, literally squarejawed). Its frames packed with vibrantly colorful, detailed imagery inspired by Latin American folklore and art, the computer-animated film looks particularly impressive in 3D.
Although thankfully devoid of the sort of winking, pop culture-inflected humor prevalent in so many current animated films, “The Book of Life” provides much amusement with its inspired musical choices. Besides the original score and songs by two-time Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla (“Brokeback Mountain,” ‘’Babel”) and veteran songwriter Paul Williams, there are fun, mariachi-flavored versions of such pop hits as Mumford and Sons’ “I Will Wait,” Radiohead’s “Creep” and Rod Stewart’s “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” among others. Luna and Saldana provide their own singing, with impressive results.

Costume ball jams away Friday A costume ball with live music, comedy and prizes for best costumes should make for a memorable Halloween night. Swampdaddy’s Halloween Costume Ball, featuring The Kauai Rhythm Kings and the comedy of emcee Ed Kaahea, is scheduled 6:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at Joe’s on the Green, located at the Kiahuna golf course, 2545 Kiahuna Plantation Drive, in Koloa. Kevin “Swampdaddy” Rogers, lead vocalist and harmonica player with the Kauai Rhythm Kings, is an R&B artist originally from Chicago.

loween crowd!” Rogers said. Rogers has hosted the KKCR Radio program, “Mardi Gras Soul Revue,” for the past 16 years. “If you enjoy my radio program, this band is the live version,” he said. He has formed three bands while on Kauai. The first was The Tongue & Groove Band, next came Swampdaddy, which is also his nickname, then in late 2012 he got together The Kauai Rhythm Kings
with some of the same musicians and focused on bringing swing, rhythm and blues and soul music to the island. Rogers said they have some of the best musicians on the island, and have opened for Leon Russell, Los Lobos, and The Marshall Tucker Band. “This dance band has a horn section as well as keyboards, guitar, and one of the best rhythm sections around,” Rogers said.
The former Tongue and Groove Band played on Halloween at Joe’s on the Green between 1998 and 2006. With Halloween on a Friday this year, the Kauai Rhythm Kings want to revive that tradition. “We sort of debuted at Joe’s on the Green last year,” Rogers said. “That went over really well with a great crowd, and hopefully we can get that same fun crowd down there Friday.” Local comic legend Ed
Kaahea is taking a break from the middle of his “Older Than Dirt” tour to emcee the Halloween event. Known for his Kalei Egg commercials as well as his movie and television appearances, Kaahea will get the crowd warmed up with comedy routines and raffle off door prizes. Tickets are available at the door for $13 and online, with a $2 service charge, at www.longhairproductions.com.

More than just landscapes Galerie 103 display challenges Hawaiian art misconceptions
A
n avid art collector, Bruna Strude holds a deep passion for art. And in 2009, she created Galerie 103, a place where artists could display their craftsmanship with purpose. “I grew up surrounded by art,” Strude said. Galerie 103 seeks to unite local, national and international artists. It features works of high-quality art that reflect global issues and the island’s unique environment — past and present. The Poipu gallery’s most recent exhibit, “State of the
Art,” displays many art mediums including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and photography by artists Strude, Carol Bennett, Margaret Ezekiel, Roberta Griffith, Tom Leiber, Deyana Mielke and Sally French. French, once a visiting artist of residence at University of Hawaii Manoa, reflects her experiences at the school through her artwork and has one of the most prominent pieces in the gallery, the screen print “Ducklips and Me.” “It shows the generational gap between me and my students,” French
said. “It’s about my relationship with (them).” Galerie 103, 2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka Road, No. 4, also showcases “3rd Saturday Film Night” in collaboration with the Independent Filmmakers of Kauai, created by Tony LeHoven. “We are more of an artistic experience,” LeHoven said. “The people who are involved in the films are from Kauai.” Different types of films are shown at the gallery every third Saturday of the month and free to the public.
Since the exhibit’s opening in September, the public has been invited to experience the different craftsmanships from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. And although the works are aesthetically pleasing, their purpose has
greater meaning, Strude said. “One of our goals is to challenge misconceptions about regionalism and ethnic origin … to expand general awareness and to correct any lingering ideas that Hawaiian art is merely
focused on the celebration of natural beauty,” Strude said. Strude also said it’s for this reason she intends to take Galerie 103, which artist friend Tom Leiber helped her create, to an international art fair during Art Basel Week in Miami, where she will set up at Aqua Art Fair 2014 in December. She wants those who come to the gallery to see the exhibitions and art in many forms. “As an art collector myself, I make sure that art is accessible to everyone,” she said.
