Matisyahu, Steel Pulse join forces
R
eggae fans on Kauai have more than one reason to celebrate Sunday. American reggae rapper Matisyahu and English roots reggae band Steel Pulse join forces for a live concert Sunday at The Kilohana Plantation, along with special guest Makua Rothman. Steel Pulse may have explored various styles of music since they started out in 1975, but when it comes to the message, this Grammy Award-winning reggae band has remained close to their roots. The group has continued its commitment to fighting injustice, educating the masses and promoting positive
messages through spiritually uplifting music. “We just can’t ignore the politics, because every life and soul that’s born on this Earth is a political maneuver for someone, at some stage, said founding member, guitarist and lead vocalist David Hinds. “We deal with positive spirits. It means putting aside the guns, the drugs and all of the things that are ailments of society. Matisyahu first made a name for himself with his album “Live at Stubbs, followed quickly by “Youth. Both albums subsequently went Gold, and “Youth was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
“Light, his 2009 album, reached No. 1 on the reggae albums chart and stayed in the top spot for 34 weeks. And his fourth studio album, “Spark Seeker, also debuted at No. 1 on the reggae chart. The 21-and-up concert begins at 5:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. General admission tickets cost $39 in advance and go up the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased online at www.flavorus.com or at select island retailers, including Deja Vu Surf Hawaii ‚ Kukui Grove, Rainbow Gas and Mini Mart in Kapaa, Pono Market in Kapaa, Healthy Hut, KMART and Progressive Expressions in Koloa.

King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade
TIANA VICTORINO TGIFR!DAY t’s a statewide tradition that’s right at home on Kauai. The annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade will usher down Rice Street at 9 a.m. Saturday in honor of the great leader who established the Hawaiian Kingdom. “This is the 98th year that the parade has been happening statewide, said Melissa Sugai, interim commissioner for the Kamehameha Day Celebration. The local parade took a hiatus a few years ago, but was resurrected after county grants
I
helped fund the tradition. Sugai didn’t know how many years Kauai has been doing it, but it was a huge tradition in the past with the goal of returning to that standing. “All participants will be on horseback, Sugai said, adding the theme will showcase the Hawaiian monarchy tradition of pa’u riders that began in the 1800s. The parade will include a fully clad grand marshal and king’s court, as well as riders representing the eight main Hawaiian islands through color and dress. The procession will start at Vidinha Stadium near the
airport and proceed up Rice Street, lasting about an hour. Guests are invited to Hoolaule’a, an after-parade event on the Historical County Building lawn, for live entertainment, craft vendors and food booths until 3 p.m. Hoolaule’a is free. Sugai encouraged people to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of Hawaii. Last year, around 75 entries floated down Rice Street. Organizers said this year’s number is slightly down, but they expect the floral displays and costumes to be just as beautiful.

Kauai Beer Company now serves food I
n September 2013, Jim Guerber and his son Justin opened Kauai Beer MARTA LANE Company. What began as a humble TASTE OF craft brewery, serving beer just two KAUAI days a week, has bubbled into a lively hangout that’s slowly adding food to its hoppy offerings. PHOTOS BY DANIEL LANE During Truck Stop Thursday, three
food trucks park outside the brewery and serve a steady flow of people. Trucks rotate every week and have included The Green Pig, Little Greek Town, Kickshaws and Trucking Delicious. The Right Slice or Haole Girl Island Sweets provides dessert. Chef Joe Fox cooked at Merriman’s

Fish House in Poipu and founded the Kauai Brew Club before he took on the task of creating beer-friendly food at Kauai Beer Company. “At KBC, it’s all about the beer,” says Fox. “Make food that tastes great with beer, but doesn‘t fill the diner up.“ After graduating from the International
Culinary Institute in Campbell, Calif., Fox worked at La Mere Michelle in Saratoga Calif. He cultivated cooking techniques at the French restaurant by butchering whole animals and making everything from scratch. At Caffe Lucio, in Santa Cruz, Calif., chef Lucio Fanni taught Fox how to create simple meals using

a few, high-quality ingredients. He combined technique and simplicity as the sous chef for the Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, Calif., and in his free time, brewed beer at home. Today, Fox can be found at the farmers market talking with farmers, selecting produce and building his menu. “If tomatoes aren’t in season, I use cucumbers, he says. “I pretty much make everything, including mustard and dressings and I use fresh, local organic eggs for aioli. Right now, you can only enjoy Joe’s food one day a week during Finally Friday, which debuted May 30. Each dish on the “9 to 5 Menu aims to satiate the working stiff, and his (or her) wallet. Prices range from $5 to $9, except for $3 pretzels made by Judith Capertina of Haole Girl Island Sweets, who uses the brewery’s spent grain. The small menu changes, but always features a meaty slider (one for $5 or two for $9) with homemade pickles and slaw; a large sandwich ($9) with homemade BBQ potato chips; and a salad. The Brewer’s Fresh Salad ($8) combines Growing Strong Farm greens, house-smoked gouda cheese, spent grain pretzel croutons and a vegan Caesar dressing made with avocados from Kauai Glory Farms. The Pork belly steam bun
slider piles tender slices of pork belly on a steamed bun drizzled with a soy and Lihue Lager glaze. It’s served with pickled cucumbers and kale cabbage slaw that’s topped with shavings of local, toasted coconut. The beer-brined jerk chicken panini with scallion lime aioli, is hands down, the most flavorful sandwich I’ve had on Kauai. Juicy chicken thighs are crusted in a 13-ingredient, smoldering spice mix that Joe learned how to make while living in the
Bahamas. Last week’s slider was mustard and pretzel crusted chicken drizzled with a KBC Maibock honey glaze. For the sandwich, Fox stacked his fennel and sage pork sausage, with homemade chorizo bacon, torched tomatoes, caramelized onions, pesto and spicy arugula between slices of Midnight Bear Breads and ciabatta roll. On tap, there’s Kauai Juice Company’s kombucha, plus five KBC beers including two mainstays: Lihue Lager, a light
beer with 4.4 percent alcohol by volume and Black Limousine (4.4 percent), which looks like Guinness stout, but is light bodied. “Tonight’s Finally Friday 9 to 5 menu features summer saison fresh garden spinach salad, with roasted squash, onions and cucumbers tossed in a scallion-cilantro lime vinaigrette and topped with Kauai Kunana Dairy goat cheese. You’ll also get to try the pork belly steamed bun or that beerbrined jerk chicken panini. For the first time, there’s also black limo braised oxtail stew with Kauai kiawe cornbread and island honey compound butter. For dessert: gingered beer upside down cake with Asian pears and a nitro mild ale shooter. Kauai Beer Company is located at 4265 Rice Street and is open Wednesday through Saturday 3 to 8 p.m. You can contact them at 245-2337.

REVIEW ASSOCIATED PRESS JAKE COYLE
‘Edge of Tomorrow’ the right kind of rerun
T
he time-shifting sci-fi thriller “Edge of Tomorrow” has perfectly encapsulated what it is to be a summertime moviegoer. We’re dropped into a battlefield of digital effects with the fate of the world at stake. Torrents of gunfire and explosions surround. Some alien clonks us over the head. We black out and it all happens again. And again. “Edge of Tomorrow,” in which Tom Cruise plays an officer who continually relives a day of
combat against extraterrestrials, probably isn’t a commentary on the repetitiveness of today’s blockbusters. Its star, after all, has been the unchanging, unstoppable avatar of big summer movies. But in the film directed by Doug Liman (“Swingers,” ‘’The Bourne Identity”), the action-star persona of Cruise is put into a phantasmagorical blender. As military marketer Maj. William Cage, he’s thrown into battle against his will by an unsympathetic general (the excellent Brendan
Gleeson), and then finds himself stuck in a mysterious time loop. Cruise dies dozens of times over and over, often in comical ways. Does this sound like a great movie, or what? The selling point of “Edge of Tomorrow” may indeed be seeing one of Hollywood’s most divisive icons reduced to Wile E. Coyote. He’s like a real-life version of the video game “Contra,” with the code of seemingly endless life. Dying again and again, Cruise has
rarely been so likable. Based on the 2004 Japanese novella “All You Need Is Kill,” ‘’Edge of Tomorrow” begins in the de rigueur fashion of news clips that catch us up on five years of alien invasion that has - with historical symmetry - encompassed Europe and left the beaches of northern France as the primary point of battle. Cage is dumped on an aircraft carrier, callously sent into battle by a commanding officer (a very fun Bill Paxton,
spouting lines like, “Battle is the great redeemer” in a Kentucky accent), and outfitted in a high-tech exoskeleton he doesn’t know how to operate. When he lands on Normandy or thereabouts, he’s an easy target for the aliens, dubbed Mimics. The Mimics resemble black, scampering dreadlock wigs or electrified Rorschach Tests. When a particularly big one swallows Cage, his day resets. This is “Groundhog Day” with guns.
This time around, though, it’s not Sonny and Cher that wake him up each day but a drill sergeant calling him “maggot.” Whereas Bill Murray got to learn how to play the piano and fall in love, Cage must become a better killer. He strives to make it through the battle, getting a little further each time before dying. He quickly pairs with the most celebrated fighter in the war (Emily Blunt), who recognizes his strange predicament.

Summer Fine Art Festival in Poipu Sunday LISA ANN CAPOZZI TGIFR!DAY nna Skaradzinska loves to paint portraits. She also likes to create pictures of bugs, birds, fish and anything that inspires her. “I work through observations on life,” Skaradzinska said. “I like to mix realism with abstract.” Her original works of art along with the creations by other talented Kauai painters and sculptors will be one of the highlights at the sixth annual Summer Fine Art Festival on Sunday in Poipu. The festival is produced by the Women Artists of Kauai organization and the National Tropical Botanical Garden. “I like being part of a group like the Women Artists of Kauai. Each of us is on our own path. They are very inspiring. There’s no competition between us,” Skaradzinska said. “The best part is that 20 percent of the sales at the event go to a nonprofit cause.” Established Kauai artists will include Patrice Pendarvis, Donia Lilly, Helen Turner, Suzy Staulz,

Sake, rice and raw fish Fundraiser dedicated to craft of drink TOM LAVENTURE TGIFR!DAY t’s all things sake. A special fundraiser seeks to showcase the versatility and variety of the gourmet alcoholic beverage that ranges from a perishable, unpasteurized variety to a sparking sake that tastes more like a champagne. The Rice and Sake tasting will be at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, June 19 at Kauai Marriott Resort for anyone interested in the delicious (and potent) drink. “We have scheduled a short presentation on rice by Lyndsey Haraguchi-Nakayama

Daniel Braun displays a sake.
of Hoopulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill located in Hanalei,” said Sandi Kato-Klutke. “There will also be a wine sommelier who is versed on sake and how it is made.” Daniel Braun, owner of
Princeville Wine Market, said the designation of sake grades comes with a rice polishing process. The polishing is the process of carefully breaking away the outer husk with more of the proteins, and leaves a more starchy inner kernel. The most common misnomer of sake is that it must be served warm, he added. Most sakes are served cold to help bring out the distinguishable fruity tastes within. As with most wines, sake was also made to accompany a food dish and tastes best when pared with those foods. Sake was made to go with raw fish. “People who enjoy the crisp white wines often like
sake,” he said. A special menu will be paired with sake selected by Young’s Market. The menu will include a spicy ahi poke bowl; vegetarian forbidden rice salad bowl; spicy vegan tofu eggplant brown rice bowl; General Tsao chicken long grain rice bowl; Indian lamb curry basmati rice bowl; and sausage and seafood jambalaya rice bowl. The desserts, including rice pudding, okoshi, butter mochi, and chi chi dango, will be served with a specialty Biwa (loquat) tea. RSVP by Monday to Sandi Kato-Klutke at 651-9106, or email to hlta.kauai@gmail.com.

InsPirates keep laughs coming as they create comedy on stage BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY bare stage and black walls might not sound like a place of laughter. Doesn’t really seem like the kind of setting that would spark crazy creativity. And it sure doesn’t look like where you would find some of the most clever, spontaneous people on Kauai. But when it comes the folks behind the InsPirates improv comedy, it’s all they need, if that. Really, just give them a place to interact with an audience, give them a few scenarios, even just a word, and they’ll have you laughing in no time. They do it with expressive faces,

voice inflections, body language, and some of the quickest wits you’ll likely ever witness. That’s the very heart of improv — and these folks are very, very good at it, starting with Thalyn Nikolau, leader of this comedy improv troupe who has been producing and performing theater events on the island for six years. He calls it the jazz music of the theater world. “Improv takes a very unique blend of skills. Seemingly paradoxical at times, he said. “When people come to wlearn, they usually show up on one end of the spectrum or other, from timid and contained to over
