Filipino Fiesta kicks start Ohana Day festivities DARIN MORIKI TGIFR!DAY

he Kauai Museum in Lihue will host its annual Filipino Fiesta Saturday to welcome in the new year and kick start Ohana Day festivities, held on the first Saturday of each month. Kauai Museum Marketing Director Lani Kaui said festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a traditional dance performance by the Kasibulan Filipino Folk Dance Company. Kaui said the event will feature a new twist: a dessert contest that will begin at 11 a.m. “When we were thinking about food and the menu, we also thought about what we were going to do for dessert, and then we thought

it would be a great if we could have other people come up with a dessert,” Kaui said. Each dessert, she said, will be judged on three main factors: taste, texture and appearance. Three prizes will be offered for the top dessert chosen by the museum’s three judges, including a free Kauai Museum membership and two $100 and $50 gift certificates to the Kauai Museum Shop. A paid lunch will be served at noon by Rick-Jayda’s Bakery Foods, Etc., based out of the Rice Shopping Center. Contest desserts will be sold at that time, with proceeds benefiting the Kauai Museum.

oy’s is a classy chain restaurant that is part of the Outback Steakhouse family. In 2014, the restaurant in Poipu Shopping Village and owned by Roy Yamaguchi will celebrate 20 years on Kauai. I was welcomed by fabulously dressed hostesses and staff with welcoming smiles. Soft music was playing and each table had candles in beautiful holders. There are two parts of the restaurant, split by the shopping center’s walkway.

I was served complimentary edamame while I was waiting for my drink. I’ve had soy beans before but I must say the spice they used for it, a special mix of

seven spices I was told, made this simple snack especially delicious. I had few different servers catering to my table. All of

them were extremely nice and absolutely knowledgeable on all details of what they were offering. I was impressed to find out they all go through a special sauce training, where they learn alongside the chefs about the ingredients in all sauces they offer. I started with the Salmon Lovers Duo (smoked salmon

rangoons, house cured salmon, scallion aioli, dill creme fraich $11.50). This delicious appetizer was recommended by manager Tino Hernandez and I would like to thank him. Roy’s serves up creative cocktails

“A

re you ready?” said bartender Jesse Goo. I’ve bartended myself and know that if a bartender tells you this — they are ready! Like a mag, he started flipping bottles and shakers, while telling me the details about each ingredient, brand, flavor, resemblance and garnish origin with such knowledge that I was left speechless. Presentation of both bartender and drink was impressive. The drink was Haleiwa Hana Hou (a Roy’s original. A refreshing cocktail, with Asian inspired ingredients: Nami Hana Shochu, Effen Cucumber Vodka, Yuzu juice, muddled Chiso Leaf and Canton Ginger float $10.00). I am a vodka drinker and have experimented with many mixes myself and can

Maine Lobster Essence $33.50). Well done and slightly crispy, it was served over red potatoes and asparagus and I can see why the restaurant has a special training on sauces. The sauce was complicated and tasty. For desert, I enjoyed the Fresh Island Fruit Sorbet (a refreshing trio of Lappet’s sorbet from Kauai, served with an assortment of fresh fruits $8). In my case it was: coconut, mango and guava and refreshing and rich they were. It was the perfect end to a filling meal. “Fresh, local and exciting ingredients, with an always changing menu,” server Jason Pittman nicely put it. The restaurant stays local when they can with produce from Kauai farms and goat cheese from Kunana dairy to name a few. “Unique flavors and presentation,” server Danny Enriques added.

confidently say, that this one was up with the most successful ones. Recommended! Another one that got my attention was the Roy’s famous 385 North Buzz Martini. Just like the buzz started with Roy’s first restaurant (385 North), this martini starts a buzz with its sinful flavors of Cinnamon Sugar, Kahlua, Bailey’s, Kauai Coffee and Cream of Coconut $9). Roy’s Poipu Bar and Grill Courtyard happy hour is nightly from 5:30 to 6:30. The one I know I am having next time is the Watermelon Wave (a twist of Watermelon Jolly Rancher: Made with Roy’s House-Made Watermelon Syrup, Passion Fruit and Skyy Pineapple Vodka, and fresh lime juice $7).

Just one look at their menu and you can be assured you will not get a boring drink. They are inspired by the classics, but the bartender has the freedom to make their own creation. Great success, I believe. Manager Apoli Sagucio is the wine expert and their wine menu is sure to intrigue the connoisseurs. With a menu at least double the size of the food menu and divisions such as Old World and New World, there is something for every wine lover. Try the bartender’s own, “Jesse’s Onaga.” He likes to make this drink in two ways: a shot with the gang or a refreshing cocktail. This beverage is a smooth blend of Crown Royal, Apple Schnapps, Amaretto, Cranberry and Pineapple juice ($9).

‘Anchorman 2,’ bloated but still funny C an there be too much of a good thing? Where did that expression come from, anyway? If it’s good, isn’t more always better? Discuss. Or, actually, don’t discuss. Because, in the case of “Anchorman 2” anyway, the question is sort of pointless, isn’t it? Everything about both the original 2004 film, a cult classic of the Will Ferrell oeuvre, and its lead character, Ron Burgundy, was puffed up and absurd and ridiculous. And so, why wouldn’t the sequel be even more puffed up, more absurd and more ridiculous? As long as Ferrell’s back (he is), and reunited with his wacky partners (he is) to form a veritable dream team of inappropriateness (they do), then what could be wrong? Not that “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” again directed with total self-assurance by Adam McKay, is a work of fine art. It’s a broad, low-brow comedy, which one imagines was concocted somewhat like a huge abstract painting: You throw gobs (or jokes) onto a big canvas, some spills over the edges, and it’s messy and lumpy, but hey, it’s all good, and anyway, the next gob is coming. For those who may have missed the original, it brought us Burgundy, a TV anchor defined by his goofiness, self-importance, good-natured chauvinism, and polyester. Set in the ‘70s, the theme was gender equality; Burgundy’s foil was Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), who sought her own anchor chair. In the sequel, the issue isn’t gender but the very purpose of TV news: To inform, or entertain? We’re in 1980, and Burgundy and Corningstone, now married, host a morning show together. Then she — alone — is offered an evening anchor slot. Burgundy? He’s fired (the boss is a gruffly funny

Harrison Ford, sounding quite Brokaw-esque.) Ron tells Veronica she can’t take the job without him. She accuses him of acting like Julius Caesar. “Who the hell is Julius Caesar?” he bellows. “I don’t follow the NBA!” Veronica takes the job and abandons Ron. But opportunity comes in the form of a job offer that sounds crazy: a new 24-hour news channel, being launched by an Aussie billionaire. Its name? GNN. Burgundy heads for New York, stopping to gather the old news team from San Diego — er, San Di-AHgo, as he pronounces it: overly emotional sportscaster Champ Kind (David Koechner), now running a chicken joint; overly sexed reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), now photographing cats; and overly insane weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell, reliably hilarious) now dead. Or so he thinks. Burgundy’s new nemesis is the impossibly good-looking, self-adoring anchorman Jack Lime (James Marsden, perfect in such self-mocking roles). And his superior is the overachieving Linda Jackson (Meagan Good), who finds Burgundy ridiculous but then inexplicably falls for him. Linda is not only a woman but black, a doublewhammy for the chauvinistic Burgundy; their coupling, however improbable, leads to a very funny dinner-table scene with Linda’s disapproving family. Of course, underdog Ron has tricks up his sleeve. “Why do we need to tell the people what they need to hear?” he muses. “Why can’t we tell them what they WANT to hear?” And they’re off, satirizing today’s infotainment brand of cable news. A routine involving an endless car chase and, well, Yasser Arafat (yes, Yasser Arafat) is one of the more inspired scenes in the film.

ow often do you have the chance to paint to the soothing live sounds of legendary Kauai musician Larry Rivera? Thanks to local artists Patrick Ching and Mazzarella Tuesday offers an opportunity to do just that. A painting party is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. at the Patrick Ching Mazzarella Gallery. Both artists will be on-hand to help participants with their artistic creations. Usually, Ching said he resorts to radio music when hosting such classes — or, as he calls them, “expression sessions.” “But Larry Rivera offered to do a free little music concert,” he said. “I thought it would be nice to put a little music and art together.” Rivera performs from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages. Participants can choose to bring their own

supplies or use those provided by the gallery. “Some people will come just for the music,” said Ching. Rivera, 83, is one of Hawaii’s most famous entertainers, even performing with Elvis at the Coco Palms Resort. He

continues to perform weekly, at Cafe Portofino at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, at Coconut Marketplace at 5 p.m. Fridays and at the Kauai Museum at 1 p.m. Saturdays. Patrick Ching of Princeville is known for his detailed paintings

of Hawaiian wildlife, including forest birds and marine animals. Mazzarella, whose real name is Robert Miller, and Ching formed a partnership about three months ago when they opened their gallery in Kapaa. “I’ve been painting my whole life and enjoy hosting these painting parties to give back to the community to share painting tehcniques with folks that are interested,” said Mazzarella. He took on his artist’s name in honor of his mother, whose maiden name is Mazzarella.The Patrick Ching Mazzarella Gallery, at 4-356 Kuhio Highway in the Kinipopo Shopping Village, is home to the largest assembly of originals, fine art reproductions, art, clothing and books by both artists. YOU DECIDE WHO PAYS

You’ll soon be getting a ballot from KIUC so you can vote on the fees being charged to customers who don’t want a smart meter.

Some people don’t want to pay. So there will be an election in January and you’ll be asked to decide whether the charges should stay in place.

Most people don’t spend a lot of time thinking about their electric meter, so here’s some background.

A YES vote means that only those people with old meters will pay the cost of reading them.

Last year, KIUC began installing wireless smart meters that send data on your electric use directly to our office. This way, no one has to go out to your home or business to read the meter every month.

So you decide who pays. Watch for your election ballot and make sure to vote by mail, by phone or online by Jan. 25.

Ninety percent of our customers have smart meters. Ten percent don’t. So we have to send our technicians out to read 3,000 old meters. That will cost the cooperative about $340,000 a year in wages, vehicles, gas and equipment. To cover that cost, KIUC charges $10.27 a month to customers with the old meters. The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission approved these charges and said they’re “reasonable.”
