O

ctober is Filipino American Heritage Month. To celebrate, the Kauai Concert Association will host Charmaine Clamor, a rising Filipino-American recording artist, on Sunday. The show is a joint fundraiser for the KCA and The Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce for the construction of its Kauai Philippine Cultural Center in Puhi. “We wanted to do something for the large Filipino population here, said Jason Blake, president of the KCA. The concert begins at 4 p.m. in the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. “She’s got a big voice, a big range. So she can sing low, sultry jazz stuff, but she can also belt really high, Blake said. “She’s the first person to kind of fuse jazz and Filipino music. Clamor has been celebrated by The New York Times as “a gifted vocalist and by The Los Angeles Times as “one of the important and original new jazz singers of the decade,

according to her website. Her honors include the Asian Heritage Award in Performing Arts, Filipinas Entertainer of the Year and recognition as one of the 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the United States. “With three consecutive albums in the JazzWeek World Music Top-20, including the rare feat of simultaneously making Top-5 on both the World and Traditional Jazz radio charts, Charmaine has earned unprecedented praise for her cultural trailblazing, her website states. “But she won’t rest until audiences feel her passion for all kinds of music — and for the blessed planet we inhabit. Tickets cost $35 for adults, $25 for seniors and $20 for students For more information or to purchase tickets visit kauai-concert.org or call 245-SING.

n 1996, Joseph and Marti Paskal, opened up Postcards Cafe in Hanalei. Organic consumers themselves, they wanted to have a place where more people can join in and have a taste of locally grown, organic produce combined in a variety of vegetarian and seafood choices. The name of the restaurant has to do with Marti’s interest in collecting vintage postcards, some of which have found their place on the walls of the cafe. “The bosses’ kitchen, is how manager Sarah Martin calls the restaurant, since the owners dine there almost daily.

“Once people come in, they come back, Sarah said. “I think more people are starting to realize we don’t only serve vegetarian. We also have a lot of deliciously prepared seafood choices. The appetizer I got to enjoy was the Postcard platter. Crunchy seafood-filled rockets with coconut curry. Scrumptious crab cakes. Spice- crushed seared ahi (gluten free). And the famous Hanalei taro fritters (gluten free/ vegan). These pupus are served with delicious pineapple chutney, relishes and sauces. (platter for four, $36; for two, $20; single item, $14). The dish

?>BC20A3B 0=3 3A8=:B VESSELINA JELIAZKOVA SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY If you are looking for a healthy vegetarian and seafood restaurant, with selected beer and wine, Postcards Cafe is an excellent choice. Located in Hanalei, Postcards is a family-owned restaurant that has been serving organic and local food since 1996. Recommended by manager Sarah Martin, I was served the “Light White Wine Sangria (pitcher $25; glass $8). Prepared with white table wine (Chablis), lilikoi and pineapple pieces and pineapple juice, this colorfully looking and refreshing beverage is a delicious dinner starter. The Hibiscus Cooler, which the menu calls, “A beauty, is a beverage made with

is the perfect starter combo, that is beautifully arranged and equally delicious. Followed by wasabi crushed ahi — Hawaiian Tuna, an island favorite, with marin shoyu ginger sauce, the evening’s rice and fresh vegetables (at market price) and the Sorrento — fusilli pasta and divine shrimp and fish, with mushrooms, tomatoes, shallots, greens and garlic, all sautÊed in a chevre Chardonnay sauce or

pineapple juice blended with hibiscus iced tea and mint ($4). Coming in from a hot day on the beach, the drink is a refreshing choice that will wake up your senses with the hint of mint. And beauty it is. Owners Marti and Joseph Paskal have developed a separate wine menu that is sure to satisfy a variety of tastes. Marti’s brother, Richard, who helps with the choices, is a wine store owner off island and a wine connoisseur. With wines from Argentina, Portugal, California, France and Germany to name a few, it is safe to say their selection could cover the tastes of people from all four corners of the world.

dairy-free marinara ($24). If you like your plate looking as well as tasting good, Postcards Cafe will offer you exactly that: an overall feeling of beauty in a high-class environment, accompanied by great tasting food. “Every night is a special night, Sarah Martin said, when asked if they have any special nights at the restaurant. “We are open seven nights a week. We still operate on summer hours

starting at 5:30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. because of the high volume of customers. The cafe has its own organic garden on site, with herbs and kale. “Every sauce is homemade. I like that we try to use mainly organic and local when we can and we don’t skip on ingredients, our server Koral McCarthy said. Considering the detailed taste of our food, I can confirm that’s the case.

n an age when we’re able to consume content so many different ways — and that’s a good thing, mostly — let’s declare right now that there’s only one truly correct way to experience “Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron’s thrilling new space film. In a theater. On a huge screen. And in 3-D. Yes, even for all you 3-D naysayers — we hear you, but this is the movie you HAVE to see in 3-D. If you’ve seen the heart-pounding trailer, you’ll know that Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play astronauts who experience a traumatic accident in space. You may also know about the extraordinary special effects used to create this weightless cinematic world — so extraordinary that many are calling the film a landmark of the sci-fi genre. But what you can’t know, until you’re in the theater, is just how much you’ll feel like you’re up there in space, feeling its vastness, perhaps even feeling cold. And how you might let yourself forget, momentarily, that this movie wasn’t shot on location. And how you’ll ask yourself, how did they DO this? And how you’ll then forget the question, because you’ll be caught up once again in this 90-minute thrill ride. Cuaron’s filmmaking prowess is no secret. His 2007 “Children of Men was a masterful evocation of a bleak futuristic world where women can no longer conceive, and warring gangs struggle for control of the dying human race. But while that film teemed with people, “Gravity has but a few. It aims to evoke the full terror of true solitude — indeed, Bullock is alone much of the time. And though it doesn’t take place on Earth, “Gravity is in a way closer to our reality — not a futuristic world, but one that exists today, though you’d

have to be on a space mission to get there. If you were, you’d want to be with Matt Kowalski (Clooney), the experienced mission commander, cocky and totally in charge. He jokes easily with Mission Control (voiced by Ed Harris, in a nice nod to “Apollo 13 and “The Right Stuff ) while spacewalking with a new jet pack, but when disaster strikes, he’s the guy you want nearby. Bullock is Ryan Stone, a medical engineer installing a new system on the Hubble telescope. She’s on her first mission, and feeling rather queasy, when suddenly a massive field of debris comes hurtling by, sending Stone spiraling out of control. All this and more is established in a single, stunning, 13-minute opening shot. And Cuaron is just getting started. While we’ll reveal no more plot, it’s worth noting that the film’s one flaw stems from an effort to give Bullock’s character more of a backstory than necessary, perhaps an overly sentimental one. But overall, the actress finds that difficult balance between frailty and tenacity. And Bullock’s grounded presence — pun intended — is a huge plus here. The script is by Cuaron and his son, Jonas, but kudos are also due cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and visual effects supervisor Tim Webber, for their seamless blend of live action, animation and CGI. As for the 3-D, never once does it feel anything less than totally integrated with the film’s purpose. As the credits roll, you may find yourself thinking about real space launches you’ve watched, or watching man walk on the moon, and remembering that feeling of awe at how man ever developed the technology to explore space in the first place.

he show goes on all month, and the field trips start this weekend and next weekend by the Women Artists of Kauai. The Women Artists of Kauai launched its second Open Studio Tour and Kauai Museum Preview Exhibit with a reception on Wednesday. The first of the two weekends Open Studio Tours start Saturday and Sunday and continues next Saturday and Sunday. “These open studio tours are really popular on the Mainland, said Marionette Taboniar, the Women Artists of Kauai coordinator. “We have 18 participating artists. On the Mainland, there are hundreds of artists who take part in the tour. During the tours, 20 percent of the sales price is earmarked for the scholarship fund of the Zonta Club of Hanalei, which will also be bolstering its own efforts by hosting a Fashion and Tea event at the Princeville Golf Club Saturday. This weekend, the Open Studio Tour goes from Lihue to Waimea from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. During the Oct. 19 and 20 weekend, the Open Studio Tour goes from Wailua to Wainiha between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “This format is really convenient for people

wanting to see artists in their environments, Taboniar said. “People can take in the entire tour, a part of it, or even just a select artist. For those who want a taste of the entire 18-artist field, the Kauai Museum has a Women Artists of Kauai wall where each participating artist has one piece on display through Oct. 31. “The Kauai Museum show is just the appetizer, enabling the viewer to decide which artists to view better, she said. The Women Artists of Kauai are no strangers to helping community nonprofit organizations, doing regular tours through the National Tropical Botanical Garden and the Hanapepe United Church of Christ as fundraisers. “We just like to create, said Helen Turner, participating artist. “If we can help someone, that’s great. But we just like to create. We’re artists. Participating artists include Rhonda Forsberg, Donia Lilly, Ibbie Alshamma, Dawn Lundquist, Carol Diane Bevis, Leslie Hagen, Suzy Staulz, Keani Andrade, Patrice Pendarvis, Debbie Barklow, Caylin Spear, Lannie Boesiger, Anna Skaradzinska, R. Eve Solomon, Kathleen Bryan, Angela Headley, Turner, and Taboiar. Visit www.womenartistsofkauai.org for a printable copy of the Open Studio Tour maps with locations of each participating artist.
