Since 1983, the Kauai Society of Artists, a non-profit, has provided educational and exhibition opportunities for artists living in Kauai. Art Kauai 2017 is partially supported by member and program fees, donations and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
The opening reception is 5 to 8 tonight with live music at the KSA Gallery at Kukui Grove Center. The exhibition will take place Saturday through Oct. 28 from noon-6 p.m. throughout the week except for Friday, when the exhibition runs from noon-9 p.m.

on merit. It’s not impartial, that’s the point,” Jones said. “It’s about looking at the artwork itself. The artists aren’t guaranteed they’re going to get in the show. Our other shows are open shows, but this is our only juror show.” Correia focuses on the sale of fine art and advises a spectrum of artists — from emerging to mid-career to museum-collected. She is a consultant for private and public art collections and art sales for private collectors, museums and other institutions with significant art collections, according to a press release. On average, around 65-70 artists participate in the exhibition each year.
More so than just having a juror select their art work for a show, along with a $2,000 cash prize, there is also an opportunity for some artists to have their work purchased and selected by an acquisition committee from the state. When an acquisition committee buys an artist’s artwork, that means it will be hung up in office and state buildings. “It’s a great honor when an artist gets their work chosen and purchased by the state,” Jones said. “It’s something they can all put on their resume. This is the only show that we have that the acquisition committee comes to on Kauai. It’s a really popular show for artists to enter because of this.”

Bamboo Sushi a great spot for an affordable morning meal, starting with a $5 sandwich
f you’re on the lookout for what may be the best deal on Kauai when it comes to a breakfast sandwich, your search may be over. The name of this particular restaurant might surprise you since we’re talking breakfast and this doesn’t really sound like a place for breakfast, but once you visit, you’ll understand: Bamboo Sushi. It’s in Anchor Cove Shopping Center in Lihue,
BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY almost a bit hidden away. Keep walking and you’ll find two entrances, one from the outside, where you have a partial view of Kalapaki Bay, and one from the inside of the shopping area. Either way, you’ll be good to go. The staff is quick and friendly. When my wife and I sat down for breakfast, it
wasn’t more than a minute when our waiter arrived with menus, said hello, and returned with two tall glass of iced water. We knew what we wanted because it’s a favorite and perhaps the best $5 you’ll spend on Kauai. It’s the breakfast sandwich and yes, at $5, it’s a deal. For the money, you get a lot. Two strips of bacon, eggs (how you like them), and a slice of cheese, all delivered on flaky, tender

sandwich buns. You can add hash browns (crisp and fresh) for a few dollars, if you want a bit more to fill up, but the sandwich is perfect for a nice, easy breakfast. Stop in, spend 20 minutes, have a cup of coffee, too, and enjoy the view. This is a terrific way to start your day, mind you. And quite affordable. There are plenty of other breakfast choices on the menu, and all are good. No matter what you order, you’ll come away satisfied. But the breakfast sandwich is ideal for those of us who like something light and simple to enjoy with coffee and conversation. We should add that chickens
could approach your outside able looking for a handout, as that’s what chickens do, but it’s not a great idea to feed them. It’s discouraged, for one main reason: Once you feed one, more are soon to be at your feet and under your table. And everyone will know you’re guilty of feeding them. And not everyone likes eating their meal with chickens waiting for their share of the bounty. All that said, as I’m soft touch, if you discreetly sneak them a tiny piece of your food, no more than two, it is possible to get away with it, not attraction attention and ease a guilty conscience. The inside of the restaurant is bright and inviting, though you
may still be visited by a curious chicken. Don’t feed it or your fellow diners might not find it as humorous as you do. Bamboo Sushi, 3416 Rice Street, is open for lunch and dinner and depending on when you go, there are beer specials. If you have time, take a few minutes to walk around, check out the shops and meet some of the owners and staff. A good group of friendly folks. Back to that $5 breakfast sandwich. You will like it, that I guarantee, and it is indeed one of the best deals around. But don’t let yourself get carried away and order two or three, which is easily done by some of us lacking will power.

‘AMERICAN ASSASSIN’ INTRODUCES A NEW ACTION HERO M itch Rapp is an action hero in the vein of Jack Ryan or John McClane: an impossibly tough and determined everyday guy out to save the world. Dylan O’Brien brings a youthful freshness to that

outspoken, rebellious and single-minded, and a skilled wielder of all manner of weapons. But Rapp is first seen onscreen as a starry-eyed lover in Ibiza about to propose to his girlfriend. Their idyllic moment is ruined when terrorists storm the beach and Rapp’s fiancée ends up among the dead. Flash forward 18 months and Rapp is a bearded recluse in Rhode Island, where he’s been studying Arabic, mastering firearms and practicing martial arts. He plans to take out the terror kingpin responsible for the Ibiza attack. But his clandestine
training catches the eye of a CIA recruiter (Sanaa Lathan), who brings Rapp in as a counterterrorism operative. From there, the story jumps around multiple international destinations as Rapp undergoes advanced training with the humorless Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) and onto a mission to recover a heap of stolen plutonium. Iranian forces intend to make a nuclear weapon to attack Israel. But an American mercenary and former student of Hurley’s known as Ghost (Taylor Kitsch) is also involved, and he has his own ideas about how the plutonium should be used.

Dylan O’Brien, left, and Shiva Negar in a scene from, “American Assassin.”
Further complicating the story are the various double-agents involved and an apparently complex yet unexplained history between Ghost and Hurley. But no matter: O’Brien is wonderful to watch, a convincing action star with perfectly tousled hair. He brings a sensitivity to Rapp that balances his brutality, making him easy to root for, even if he doesn’t always follow the rules. Keaton’s Hurley is practically forgettable until a staggering scene near the film’s end that shows just how crazy his character is. As often happens with these international thrillers, plot holes are compensated
for with action and spectacular settings. “American Assassin” takes viewers to Italy, Romania, Poland, Libya and Turkey, along with various locations in the U.S. But Rapp is an interesting guy, and “American Assassin” is his origin story. Unfortunately, in setting up for a sequel, the film’s ending goes too far, essentially trading Rapp’s newly established gravitas for superhero shtick. “American Assassin,” a CBS Films/Lionsgate release, is rated R for “strong violence throughout, some torture, language and brief nudity.” Running time: 111 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.
