Kauai Voices’ concert tonight, Saturday n what promises to be a night of music for everyone, Kauai Voices presents “Made in the USA, a biannual themed concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Lihue. The program includes patriotic favorites The Star Spangled Banner, America The Beautiful, and This Land Is Your Land. The 24 selections also include spiritual songs such as, Wade In The Water, Down By The Riverside, All The Pretty Horses and Amazing Grace. The songs of Tom T. Hall, and Billy Joel are featured along with a medley from the movie, “Forest Gump. The programs are a variety of styles, genres, moods and spirits of music, according to Randy Leonard, artistic director and creator of Kauai Voices. There is a unifying theme, but it also creates an interest through the diversity of music. “Music of the USA embraces that, Leonard said. “The roots of our music come from many
places and times, and it is exciting to create a program with such diversity. There are 27 singers with Kauai Voices this season, including 10 founding members and one new singer joining the 26 returning ones from last season. Founded in 2011, Kauai Voices is a nonprofit audition vocal ensemble with a mission to enhance appreciation of choral music within the community and as a development tool for youth. When someone expresses an interest in joining the group, they attend auditions prior to the beginning of the rehearsal seasons in September and March. Leonard is a choral director and soloist with 35 years of experience. He has presented two concerts a year over the past three years, assisted by Alan Van Zee, who helps direct and creates rehearsal CDs for the singers. Spirit and desire factor in highly, he added. The goal is to nurture excellence in choral performance and offer
a high level of expectation and development of the music. “Not only on a technical level, but on a human and spiritual level of the deeper meaning and nuance of the music, he said. In addition to the concerts, Kauai Voices perform at schools and community events to help inspire and introduce something new or familiar to spark curiosity and interest in singing. Music is a fundamental part of American culture and reflects many sides of this great and beautiful country, he said. “Aloha Kauai was arranged for a prior performance of the group by Kathleen Dahill of the Wailua Homesteads. They continue to sing Aloha Kauai to help foster their interest in music and the activities that further their experiences. Tickets for each concert are $12/advance; $15 at the door and are available at www. kauaivoices.org or www. brownpapertickets.com or call 800-838-3006.

REVIEW ASSOCIATED PRESS JOCELYN NOVECK
Lovely visuals, smart writing in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’
Y
ou thought it was tricky to train a dragon? It’s even trickier to take a much-admired animated film and make a sequel that feels satisfying and worthwhile. And it’s harder still to balance the competing needs of stretching the story in new directions but retaining the guiding spirit of the original enough to make fans happy. It’s nice to be able to report that “How to Train Your Dragon 2,”written and directed by Dean DeBlois, does all that tricky stuff pretty darned well. And you’ll be happily surprised at the new twists it takes — sort of like getting an unexpected second candy bar in the vending machine. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” doesn’t play it safe, and that’s why it’s the rare sequel that doesn’t feel somewhat stale. The story returns us to Berk, where our young Viking hero, Hiccup (again voiced by Jay Baruchel), lives and frolics with his devoted dragon, Toothless, whom he befriended in the first movie, with momentous ramifications for human-dragon relations. Five
years have passed, and now Berk is a virtual playground for dragons and Vikings alike. An amusing opening sequence shows the new pursuit of dragon-racing, a game that vaguely resembles Quidditch. And adjustments have been made to enhance dragon-human coexistence: for example, an aqueduct system, to quickly put out those pesky dragon-breath fires. Hiccup, though, isn’t into the games — he’s attracted to the beautiful skies, and spends his time exploring them, aboard Toothless, adding to the map he’s making of the world. His first scene of airborne frolic with Toothless is absolutely beautiful, and a sign of the visual delights to come. Hiccup’s restless nature, though, is at odds with the aspirations of his burly father, Stoick the Vast (a sweetly gruff Gerard Butler), who wants Hiccup to take up new responsibilities. But Hiccup doesn’t feel leadership is really his thing. That’s what he tells spunky Astrid (America Ferrera, back from the first film), who is
now his girlfriend, as well as a fellow explorer. (Other famous returning voices are Jonah Hill as Snotlout and Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut.) One day Hiccup and Astrid make an ominous discovery: A trapper’s fort. Eret, son of Eret (Kit Harington) is cocky and ambitious. But his boss? He’s evil. That would be Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou), a vicious villain who’s building a dragon army. Hiccup resolves to stop him. And someone else, he learns — a mysterious figure in the skies — is also fighting Drago. Her name is Valka, and she is, shockingly, none other than Hiccup’s mother, long presumed dead. In fact, Valka — voiced by Cate Blanchett in an elegant, otherworldly accent — has spent these long years saving dragons. The scene in which she shows him the fantastic oasis where these rescued dragons live — a tropical wonderland inside a giant ice formation — is a marvel of color and inventive design, probably the prettiest scene in the film.

Rocking the Red Clay
Jazz festival returns to Kauai
T
he stage is set for Kauai’s annual Red Clay Jazz Festival. And music enthusiasts have reason to celebrate. This year, the festival has expanded to include two main concerts instead of one, as well as educational workshops with several featured artists. “We want to kind of give our audience a variety of jazz and blues,” said Judy Arrigo, Jazz Festival Chair. “As a festival, we have always tried to have local musicians, musicians from the state of Hawaii and then we fill in with musicians from around the world.” The festival kicks off Wednesday, July 18 with a pair of Jazz Around The Island concerts,

including Treysara at Common Ground Garden Cafe in Kilauea and the Mark Pulice Trio at the Kukuiula Shopping Center in Poipu. Both shows begin at 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, the Hank Curtis Trio performs at 5 p.m. at the Kauai Marriott’s Aupaka Bar, and
seven-piece Latin band Rumba de Fuego visits the Aloha Beach Resort’s Kuhio Lounge at 5:30 p.m. Educational workshops on Thursday include Jimmy Borges – “Song’The Perfect Language,” Will Bernard and Ken Emerson – “The Art of Slide Guitar Jazz,” and Pierre Lacocque – “Hands
on Harmonica.” Details are yet to be announced. On Friday, Hawaii’s premiere jazz performer Jimmy Borges and “First Lady of Jazz” Betty Loo Taylor team up for a performance at 7 p.m. at Kauai Beach Resort’s Jasmine Ball Room, followed by Berkeley, Calif.,-native Will Bernard and Bay Area-born, Hawaiian island-bred guitarist Ken Emerson. The Jazz Festival started after the Kauai Concert Association
received the W. S. ‘Pete’ Robinson Memorial Jazz Fund in 2003. The fund is used to bring jazz artists to Kauai’s stages for concerts and into classrooms to share their talent and knowledge with students of all ages to experience and learn about original American music. The main outdoor event is from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Kauai Lagoons, featuring Grammy Award-winning vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur, American
blues band Mississippi Heat and Kauai’s own Swing Shift. Arrigo said Saturday’s outdoor festivities offer a unique opportunity to enjoy beautiful ocean views, outstanding music and locally grown food. “You get the wonderful ambiance of Kauai,” she said. Tickets start at $30 for Friday, $40 for Saturday and $55 for both days. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www. redclayjazz.org or call 245-SING.
Kauai Pride returns with fresh look
T
here is a lot that can happen in a year. And for some members of the island’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning community, this past year has been an exciting one with the passage of samesex marriage in Hawaii and the delivery of two Supreme Court rulings upholding the legal process. It is a milestone that Lamba Aloha members say they are incorporating into this year’s 21st annual “State of Tropixotica Trance” Kauai Gay Pride celebration. “Marriage equality was such a huge event here in our state and certainly around the country, so we just wanted to celebrate Hawaii, and the bigger part of it is celebrating the state of marriage equality,” Lambda Aloha spokesman Ross Martineau said.
DARIN MORIKI TGIFR!DAY This year’s three-day event will kick off at 5:45 p.m. today in the Aston Aloha Beach Resort lobby with an inaugural Celebrate the State Pride Expo, featuring about seven to eight Lamba Aloha business supporters, including Kauai attorney Joe Moss in Lihue, Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens in Kilauea, and Hula Baby Biscotti and Ko Bakery in Kapaa.
“We want to make sure that the community knows who their friends and supporters are — these are the people who have advertised with us, donated items for our silent auction and many of them have been repeat supporters,” Martineau said. “It’s also informational as well because it lets people know what resources are out there, if
someone decides to get married.” A free movie on the hotel lawn, featuring the film series “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” will be held shortly afterward at dusk. The celebration will continue on Saturday with the event’s annual fundraising dance party — for those who are at least 21 years old — at the Aston
Aloha Beach Resort, featuring DJ Bliss, Charlie Cox, Bianka Princess Hanalei, Diamond Westwilliams and Boz LaMici. Doors will open at 7:30 and live events, along with dancing, will go until 1 a.m. Sunday. This year’s festivities will close on Sunday with the event’s annual pride potluck, which is jointly hosted by Lambda
Aloha and Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Kauai at Lydgate Beach Park. The potluck will begin at 11 a.m. in the small pavilion near Kamalani Playground. All proceeds from Saturday’s dance party and silent auctions held on all three days, including items from Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach, Aspire Furniture and 9th Island Sports Bar and Grill, will benefit Lambda Aloha programs and services. Individual tickets for Saturday’s dance party can be purchased online for $25 until the end of today or $30 on the day of the event at the door. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Lambda Aloha website at: www.lambdaaloha.com, call 826-4429 or send an email to LambdaAloha@gmail.com.

The Royal Order of Kamehameha — initiated in 1904 following the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893 — followed the initial float where
