OIPU — There aren’t many places to go for New Year’s celebrations on Kauai, but the Poipu Beach Resort Association is offering an opportunity to enjoy the new year in style. “There’s no other New Year’s Eve event on the island. And there’s definitely no free fireworks event on the island,” said Jody Kjeldsen, executive director of the Poipu Beach Resort Association. “It’s part of our goal to provide something for the public, visitors and residents, that they can

The free event is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m with food trucks followed by a movie in the park at 6:45, ending with a fireworks show at 8:15 p.m. The feature presentation is Disney’s ‘BFG
– Big Friendly Giant’. The fireworks show is hosted by Poipu Beach Resort Association and is a New Year’s Eve tradition in Poipu that dates back over 10 years ago. “We used to do a concert in the park with food trucks, but it sort of morphed into more of a movie night type of thing,” Kjeldsen said. “We’re trying to

The nearly 40-acre farm has around 10 varieties of cacao trees, as well as dozens of fruit trees, microgreens and other plants. Public tours are scheduled three times a week and cost $75 a ticket. Book would make Mel proud There is great fun to be had in these 109 pages. Everyone who picks one up in our bookstore immediately begins to chuckle, being of Jewish background or not, then says, “Oh, I gotta get this for …!” As another reviewer stated: “The book is best savored like bonbons, just a few at a time. Some are wry, some confirm the American Jewish experience, and some are laugh-outloud funny.” We agree! Accompanying this assembly of haikus are simple illustrations. Throughout the book at the page numbers are lovely renditions of a cherry blossom rendered in the Japanese style, as well as a bagel with a pair of chopsticks. While written in jest and good humor, many who study haiku have stated that “Haiku for Jews” is the real deal. It conveys the essences of thought, place, and moment. Yet, even with this level of achievement, you’re still likely to snort while reading it! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

loha and Happy Hanukkah! We have the perfect last-minutegift for you (or your Jewish friends)! “Haikus for Jews: For You, A Little Wisdom”, by David M. Bader; literally where East meets West! A haiku, as you likely already know, is a form of poetry created in Japan, which consists of 17 syllables, arranged in a three-line syllabic sequence of 5-7-5. As the timeless haiku poet Basho said: “There is no subject whatever that is not fit for haiku.” As New York
City author David Bader proves, this much is true! “Haikus for Jews” is a body of work that would make Mel Brooks proud. Here’s a few choice samples: “After the youngest — recites the Four Questions, the fifth — when do we eat?” “Middle East peace talks—the parties reach agreement. — Falafel for lunch.”

This is their ‘Night’ POIPU — Every teenager deserves a prom night. Lihue Missionary Church, in partnership with the Tim Tebow Foundation, will be hosting its second “Night to Shine” prom night for those with special needs. One of 350 DAVID MCCRACKEN churches particiTGIFR!DAY pating around the world, Lihue Missionary Church will hold the event at the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa in Poipu. “It’s all about having a prom night for anyone with special needs,” said Matthew Phillips, coordinator. “What we want to do is give everybody, especially those who are ostracized or feel that they are left out, the opportunity for this to be a special event for them to know how important they really are.” For people with special needs ages 14 and up, this is an opportunity for teenagers and adult to recognize that they aren’t different from anyone else, Phillips said. “We want them to feel like kings and queens and get the whole prom experience that anyone else would — the VIP treatment,” he said. This prom night is set to take place in all 50 states and 10 countries around the world. Each guest of “Night to Shine” enters this complimentary celebration on a red carpet, complete with paparazzi to simulate the real red carpet treatment. “After such an amazing response to the first two years of Night to Shine, our prayer is that this event will continue to change the face of Valentine’s Day weekend from simply a celebration of love, to a celebration of God’s love for people with special needs,” said Erik Dellenback, executive director of the Tim Tebow Foundation. Last year, it attracted 75 people with special needs who ranged from teens to kupuna. “They said that they always wanted to go to prom before but were never able to,” Dellenback said. “And at 67 years old, they were finally able to.”

The succulent offerings — either singly or in combinations as potted gardens — were a popular item Saturday as shoppers combined Christmas shopping with picking up fresh produce. Edyn Naka‘ahiki, along with visiting Alexandra Kanahele of Oahu, were in foodie heaven, gobbling up bricks of kulolo, sampling the latest Ono Pop offering of fresh strawberries with a pina colada covering, and then off to pork, peas and pimento. “The Ono Pops are cheaper here than Oahu,” Kanahele said. “And the kulolo? It’s hard to find on Oahu.” The Kauai Community Market, a partnership with the Kauai County Farm Bureau, is held Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the front parking lot at Kauai Community College.
