‘SHINING’ BRIGHT
ierce Bivens is already one JOHN STEINHORST of the most in-demand TGIFR!DAY performers on Kauai. And he’s 16 years old. Bivens’ new album, recorded and produced at Bandwagon Music Center in Lihue, will be released today. His collection of 10 original songs, entitled “Shining,” is the first full-length album for the young virtuoso. The production showcases his passionate vocals, guitar skills and insightful lyrics. “The album is really good and has taken a ton of effort and time,” Bivens said. “Anyone who likes rock music should check it out, because it’s a lot of fun and is full of cool new musical ideas.” The project was produced and recorded by Na Hoku and Grammy Music Teacher Award nominee, Jeremy Hartshorn, and is the first full-length album to be recorded by a member at Bandwagon Music Center. “Bandwagon is a huge part of why my album is out,” Bivens said. “They’ve been very helpful and supportive, and Jeremy is doing a really good thing for the island by providing an easy way for kids to learn how to play music in a supportive environment with good teachers.” The music center provides a supervised environment of music equipment where youth, ages 8 to 17, can explore playing instruments and learn about the recording process. “I kinda helped him get started on that path of becoming a song writer instead of just a shredder,” said Hartshorn, Bandwagon Music Center director. “I can’t take credit for teaching him how to play though.” Bivens won praise for his role as Dewey Finn in Hawaii Children’s Theatre’s production of “School of Rock.” His song “Make It Through” was also featured in an anti-suicide, public service announcement created by Pono Players. When he was 12, he released his first CD, “Listen to Me.” He plays several times a month with his band, The Search, and is a regular on the music team at Kauai Christian Fellowship, where Hartshorn serves as worship pastor. Bivens is sponsored by Kamoa Ukuleles, in addition to Bandwagon Music Center, where he recently accepted an internship. “His new album is a lot of fun, it’s a decidedly retro kind of sound on this album,” Hartshorn said. “There’s lots of classic rock influence with a little bit of ’80s new wave in there as well. It’s pretty impressive, because there’s some great all-time riffs on there that I think are up there with the best.” “Shining” will drop at an album release party 6 to 8 tonight at Bandwagon Music Center. There will be pizza, drinks, ice cream and live performances by Bivens and friends. The album will be available for purchase at Bandwagon, Ha Coffee Bar, Kauai Music & Sound, and Hanalei Strings as well online streaming services.

Waipa Foundation in 2016 as a beneficiary for their MAKANA program, which gives back to community organizations in Hawaii. “This is our gift, that’s why it’s called MAKANA,” Chang said. The partnership between Kona Brewing Company and Waipa Foundation was celebrated when the brewery launched the Hanalei IPA in August 2016. Then, Kona Brewing Company cut Waipa Foundation a $2,000 donation check. It’s not just sustainability and holistic ahupua’a management that caught Chang’s eye at the Waipa Foundation. He said the company wanted to branch out with brand ambassadors and sponsorships. “I really wanted to reach out into music, art, culture and food,” Chang said. “So like for this, we’ll have really
cool chefs donating their time and doing dishes that spread a really good message about appreciating where your food is from.” In addition to the food, practitioners will be partnering with the chefs to lend local knowledge, including fisherwoman Kimi Werner, hunters and mahia’ai from the Waipa Foundation. Entertainment will be provided by Waipa serenaders and Keale. The event begins at 5 p.m. with VIP cocktails and pupus. General admission attendees will be welcomed to the Waipa Foundation’s Grand Lawn at 6 p.m. with a blessing. Tickets are $125 for VIP, $75 for general admission. ically-reached consensus”! Yep! And from all ideological leanings, too! “How to Lie with Statistics”, by Darrell Huff and illustrated by Irving Geis, is a very fun, quick and entertaining read which examines the world of statistics in our daily lives and how those numbers we hear may not always be correct! Originally printed in 1954, it is amazing how incredibly relevant this book continues to be! Check out some of these chapter titles: The Sample
with the Built-In Bias, The Well-Chosen Average, The Little Figures That are Not There, Much Ado About Nothing, The Gee-Whiz Graphic. This is a great book for everyone, because it helps us to take an objective viewpoint when we hear or read statistics, allowing us to unpack their methods and discover the truth for ourselves. Critical thinking—can’t ask for better! Plus, the illustrations,
albeit of the era, are fun and whimsical, helping the author express his points, especially about “visual” statistics—some of the more dubious ones! As the historical figure Benjamin Disraeli once said: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” Enjoy and look at the world in a whole new way! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.
Review: In ‘American Made,’ a new (but the same) Tom Cruise
T
here are basically two kinds of Tom Cruise performances, and both can look pretty similar on the surface. Each likes sunglasses, going fast and smiling big. He never exactly loosens up or slows down — the
most unfathomable thing of all in Cruise’s world. But most of Cruise’s best and most interesting performances (“Magnolia,”‘’Jerry Maguire,” ‘’Collateral,”‘’Eyes Wide Shut”) have allowed some chink in the well-tanned armor, some hint of darkness under-

neath the rakish boyscout, some hollowness in the soul of America’s ageless action-movie avatar. Cruise’s latest is the smart, zippy “American Made,” a movie that plays very much like your type-A Tom Cruise movie before it yanks the rug out from beneath you and reveals the B-movie Cruise we’ve been missing. It’s a fiendishly perfect vehicle for Cruise that returns him to the cockpit, 31 years after “Top Gun,” and it simultaneously reminds us of his preternaturally winning movie-star charisma while subtly deconstructing it. Doug Liman, the film’s
director, has shown a rare knack for intelligently packaging A-list personas in kinetic kaleidoscopes. He did it in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, in “Bourne Identity” with Matt Damon and in his last film with Cruise, “Edge of Tomorrow,” the time-warped science fiction that proved a movie maxim: You just can’t kill Tom Cruise. In “American Made,” a loosely true tale set in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Cruise plays Barry Seal, a TWA pilot whose on-the-side smuggling of Cuban cigars brings him into the orbit of the CIA. (Domhnall Gleeson) turns up, and offers him a job taking surveillance photos and making government payoffs to the likes of Panama’s Manuel Noriega in Central America. “We’re building nations down there,” says Shafer, giddy. Seal, eyeing his own plane and eager to permanently switch off “auto-pilot,” jumps at the chance and doesn’t stop giggling at his good luck. “I do tend to leap before I look,” he says in a video diary that plays occasionally through the film. “Maybe I should have asked a few more questions.” Blithely, even charmingly ignorant of the dangerous and ethically questionable terrain he’s entering, Seal is soon cheerfully smuggling enormous amounts of cocaine back to Arkansas for Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel. On both sides of the law, things escalate quickly. Seal and his family (Sarah Wright Olsen plays his wife), can’t spend their money fast enough. They run out of clos-
et space and backyard holes for all the cash coming in. The CIA’s missions grow more audacious, too. Seal becomes the government’s clandestine exporter of AK-47s to the Nicaraguan Contras, who in turn are eventually flown back to Seal’s Arkansas base for military training. Seal greets them all with an easygoing grin: “Hola, amigos!” It’s an increasingly absurd circle of drugs, guns and money, all ostensibly for the fight against “enemies of democracy.” The ironies mount, topping out with Nancy Reagan’s war-on-drugs plea to “say no” while her husband’s secret efforts to arm militants is fueling one of the most powerful drug cartels in the world. “American Made,” written by Gary Spinelli, has glossed up the story, of course. Seal’s life wasn’t nearly so shiny as it is as played by Cruise. But then again, whose is? ••• Associated Press
