on’t get too swept up in the excitement of this year’s annual Koloa Plantation Days Parade. Save some energy for the live entertainment that follows the Saturday event. Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, there will be a slew of on stage antics, including Troy Lazaro, Tsunami Taiko, comedy by Frank DeLima and Augie T, award-winning hula by Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinaala, plus Hawaiian music by Led Kaapana and Mike Kaawa. Kaapana (who has been nicknamed a Hawaiian Legend) has been mesmerizing audiences for more than four decades with his slack

While the Grammy Awardand Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning musician has criss-crossed the globe, Kauai audiences can see him alongside with Kaawa starting at 2:20 p.m. Other highlights include a performance by Kumu Hula Leinaala Pavao Jardin and her halau, who are fresh off a sweep at the Queen Liliuokalani Keiki Hula Competition in Oahu last weekend. The halau captured the Miss Keiki Hula solo competition and the Master Keiki Hula solo competition. The halau also took top honors for both kaikamahine and kane divisions in the hula

kahiko and the hula auana competitions. They go on stage at 1:15 p.m. But before you get your fill of dancing and music, exercise your core when comedians Frank DeLima and Augie T hit the stage. The duo are famous for their brand of local-style

ocated on the southwest side of the island, the Kauai Coffee Visitor’s Center is open daily to serve patrons freshly-brewed, Kauai-grown coffee with delicious foods and snacks. Kauai Coffee Company got its start in the early 1800s as McBryde Sugar Company. Then, in 1987, McBryde Sugar Company transformed into Kauai Coffee Company — the largest producer of coffee in Hawaii, with 4

million trees on 3,400 acres. Darla Domingo, retail operations manager, spoke about Kauai Coffee’s new partnership with Meadow Gold. “We partnered with Meadow Gold to make Kauai Coffee ice cream that is sold exclusively on Kauai, Domingo said. “It won’t be sold in retail stores. It will be offered to restaurants and snack bars. There are two flavors to choose

from: a Kauai Coffee ice cream (Kauai Coffee with fine flecks of coffee bean) and a Turtle Macadamia Nut ice cream (Kauai Coffee, macadamia nuts, chocolate chips and caramel swirl). At the coffee bar, a single scoop of ice cream costs $2.60, and a double scoop costs $3.25. If you have a craving for baked goods, Kauai Coffee offers a variety of delicacies from local producers

Top: Have a malasada with your coffee. You can’t go wrong. They are only $1 a piece at the Kauai Coffee Co. Visitor’s Center. Left: A plain Kauai Coffee Co. ice cream (made with Kauai Coffee with fine flecks of coffee bean).

t the Kauai Coffee Company Visitor’s Center, anyone can enjoy cup after cup of onolicious coffee that’s grown on Kauai’s fertile soil. Darla Domingo, retail operations manager at Kauai Coffee Company, made TG!FRIDAY two delicious cold coffee beverages that are sure to beat the summer heat. “We use a cold brew method to make our coffee drinks, Domingo said. “It’s coarse ground coffee that sits overnight (24 hours) and is drained off and used as a base for all our coffee drinks. Domingo said the cold brew process removes a lot of the acidity in the coffee. Domingo made the Blended Mocha and the Iced Mocha. Two beverages that are delicious, refreshing and are made with love. They are essentially the same drink, except ice is used in the Iced Mocha. Both refreshments sell for $4.50. The drinks consist of your choice of

milk — 2 percent, whole, skim or soy — coffee concentrate, ice, cream and chocolate. Other cold coffee drinks available for purchase include iced coffee, iced latte and iced mocha. They range from $1.95 to $4.50. If you’re looking for something hot, Kauai Coffee has 30 pots of coffee samples to choose from — seven decafs, two specialty peaberries, five flavored coffees and medium and dark coffees. Domingo also spoke about the company’s premium bean: “Estate Reserve is our highest graded coffee that we have. You can only get it here at our Visitor’s Center or online at our website. Other menu items include the single espresso, double espresso, Americano, latte, mocha, cappuccino, cocoa and tea. Latte, mocha cappuccino and cocoa can be purchased as a 12-ounce or 16-ounce drink. The prices range from $1.25 to $4.75.

on the island. “We get frozen dough from Passion Bakery in Wailua, so we make sticky buns, Kauai Coffee peaberry cookie and lilikoi and blueberry muffins, Domingo said. Sticky buns are $3, peaberry cookies are $2.50 and muffins are $3.75. I highly recommend peaberry cookies. Domingo gave me the spiel on the peaberry and its unique flavor. “About 4 percent of coffee trees produce peaberry, Domingo said. “Inside a coffee cherry there’s usually two seeds. A peaberry is when one seeds forms instead of two, so it has a stronger, more intense taste. Also available are malasadas that are picked up every morning from Menehune Food Mart in Lawai. If you’re unfamiliar with malasadas, they are fried balls of dough that are rolled in sugar and are sometimes filled with cream. They sell for $1 each. If you’re a Hawaii resident, you get a kamaaina discount of 15 percent off all items at the coffee bar and at the store. Something you and your family can do while at the Visitor’s Center is roam the property. Kauai Coffee’s visitor center has a guided tour that’s offered four times a day — at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. They are free and no reservations are needed. All you have to do is show up around the

s sympathetic, methodical ghostbusters Lorraine and Ed Warren, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson make the old-fashioned haunted-house horror film “The Conjuring something more than your average fright fest. In 1971, they come to the Perrons’ swampy, musty Rhode Island farmhouse — newly purchased from the bank — to investigate the demonic spirit that has begun terrorizing the couple and their five daughters — a working class family who thought they had clawed their way into a rustic dream house. Lorraine is clairvoyant, and Ed is a Vaticansanctioned demonologist. They’re best known as the married, devoutly Catholic paranormal pros whose work with the Lutz family served as the basis for “Amityville Horror. ‘’The Conjuring, which boasts incredulously of being their most fearsome, previously unknown case, is built very in the ‘70s-style mold of “Amityville and, if one is kind, “The Exorcist. The film opens with a majestic, foreboding title card that announces its aspirations to such a lineage. Does it live up to that? More than most horror films, certainly. But as effectively crafted as “The Conjuring is, it’s lacking the raw, haunting power of the models it falls shy of. “The Exorcist is a high standard, though; “The Conjuring is an unusually sturdy piece of haunted-house genre filmmaking. The director is James Wan, who’s best known as one of the founding practitioners of that odious type of horror film called “torture porn (“Saw). In “The Conjuring, he goes classical. Though it comes across as a self-conscious stab at more traditional, floorboard-creaking horror, Wan has succeeded in patiently building suspense (of which there is plenty) not out of bloodiness,

but those old standbys of slamming doors and flashes in the mirror. Roger Perron (Ron Livingston) and his wife Carolyn (Lili Taylor) aren’t initially suspicious when their clocks all stop at 3:07 a.m., the family dog — as is custom — turns up dead and one of the girls starts sleepwalking. But the torment grows — bruises appear on Carolyn’s arms, the children are visited at night — they seek out the Warrens, whom we first see lecturing on the science of the supernatural. They, too, have a daughter. Their general philosophy is that a demonic spirit can attach itself to a person or an object, like a tick or unpaid parking tickets. They keep a sealed-off chamber of possessed items (a spooky doll figures prominently, of course), something like a trophy room of evil. Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes’ screenplay smoothly melds the story lines of both families. Particularly good is Julie Berghoff ’s production design, a necessity for a film that spends so much time in one setting. Cinematographer John R. Leonetti’s camera creeps slowly through the house. “The Conjuring shows its flaws, though, in its occasional digital effects representing the demons. Such choices effectively break the careful, naturalistic atmosphere Wan has created. The filmmakers have told stories of brushes with the supernatural while making the film, which only further contributes to the feeling that “The Conjuring is too busy overstating its verisimilitude to have anything else on its mind. But most effecting are Wilson and the wonderful, sad-eyed Farmiga. When the Perrons are in need, the Warrens come with their instruments and understanding, ready to help a family haunted by an unseen demon.

ust off your coconut bras and grass skirts, because Jill Landis is hosting a party to celebrate the release of her new book. Oh, and you are invited, too. Landis will be signing copies of “Three to Get Lei’d, the third book in her Tiki Goddess Mystery series, at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tahiti Nui in Hanalei. The book signing will be hosted, fittingly enough, in the luau room of Tahiti Nui. There will be live music from the Pono Kane Trio, food, a no-host bar and hula (of course). “We will have hula, spontaneous hula, crazy hula, serious hula, Landis said, adding she will probably hula in between signing books. “It’s a lot of fun. Any excuse to have a party — I give it to them once a year. The Tiki Goddess Mysteries are “tales of the madcap capers of a troupe of whacky geriatric hula dancers set on

the North Shore of Kauai, according to Landis’ website. “The books appeal to all ages — grandmothers and their granddaughters can read them, Landis said. Her inspiration? Life on Kauai. Landis has owned a home on island since the 70s, and has become a full-time resident of Kauai’s North Shore since 2008. “Things that are so normal to us can be very quirky, we are just used to it, Landis said. “I can put a spin on it to make it funnier. I mean, where else do you go to a bus bench blessing? “Three to Get Lei’d follows the hula maidens on the adventure to figure out who stabbed someone with the Chef Kimo’s sashimi knife, that nobody is ever supposed to touch. And don’t think these books are just for people dreaming of a Hawaiian vacation. “Its been very surprising, people

all over just love these books, Landis said. “Visitors have been here are like, ‘Oh this is just like Kauai.’ People that live here go, ‘Is that me? I hope that’s me?’ Landis, who admits she was a bit reserved in her first Tiki Goddess book, said she was worried her friends would be wary if they popped up in her books. Instead, she has friends who write down their catchphrases hoping it would made a cameo in the series. “I make caricatures out of all kinds of people, I blend parts of different people, and it’s just fun, Landis said. Landis said her favorite character is Kiki — the crazy bossy pants who thinks she’s in charge of the hula maidens. “It’s me and a whole bunch of people wrapped into one. Fans who can’t make it to this Sunday’s event can hold out for next year. Landis said her upcoming title

is “Too Hot Four Hula. Landis has written more than 25 novels, and has garnered a slew of awards for her romance and fiction novels. For more information, visit www.thetikigoddess.com. Landis’ book is available for purchase on her website or Amazon.com.

his year’s obon season continued last weekend at the Lihue Hongwanji Mission temple as hundreds of people gathered for two nights filled with the smell of freshly-cooked food and sounds of traditional Japanese and Okinawan songs. Local food from the bon dance, which sold out within the first two hours on both nights, included flying saucers; barbecue meat sticks; barbecue chicken sticks; pronto pups; saimin cups; shave iced; and poi andagi, a local favorite. The temple also opened up its playground for children attending the bon dance and had volunteers on hand to host several games in the temple’s classroom, including ring toss and coin toss games. Lihue Hongwanji Mission Dharma School teachers Joann Naganuma, Karen Hiranaka and Carol Valentine also had a booth outside the temple’s social hall, where they sold handmade glass bead necklaces, photo cards, bags, jewelry and leis. The trio, who were also selling pre-sale tickets for a car wash fundraiser on Sunday at Kukui Grove Center, said they are trying to raise funds for students traveling to Oahu for the Sadako Peace Memorial dedication ceremony on Sept. 2 at Pearl Harbor.
