eoki’s Paradise has been serving up seafood, steaks and hula pies for 30 years. The secret to their success is the sense of family and community that is felt when customers walk through the front doors, said John Poehnelt, assistant general manager. “It’s about family and community; there’s employees whose families have worked here for generations,” he said. “We’ve always
endorsed family within the restaurant, and that’s what holds us together.” Martina Kamarullah, community relations coordinator, said several members of her family got their first job at Keoki’s Paradise. “When my aunts moved here 20 years ago, Keoki’s was their first job on the island,” she said.

Now, her 16-year-old cousin works at the restaurant, which employs about 180 people. “We take great pride in our employees,” she said. Located in the Poipu Shopping Village and nestled in a garden, Keoki’s Paradise offers a range of options. In addition to a main dining room menu, there is also a bar, chef’s sunset and gluten-free menus. In the main dining room, dishes like prime rib and panko and mac nut crusted fish are staples. “A lot of the locals go for prime rib; the panko mac nut crusted fish is a good tourist pick,” Kamarullah said. “Tourists come in for Hawaiian fish, so they are drawn to the fish dishes.” Other popular menu items include the seafood
People come from all over the island to perform at Keoki’s Paradise, Jim said. Even though it’s still new, the hula show is already popular, she said. “People choose the dining room side over the bar now, and people come in just for the show,” she said. Keoki’s Paradise is popular with both tourists and residents, Kamarullah said. “Because we’ve been here for so long, there are a lot of people who have been coming here for 30 years,” she said. Keoki’s Paradise offers live music every night of the week. Reservations are not required, but recommended.

Others may want the full dining experience.” For those who want to eat quickly, the hostess will offer the bar, which is family

andy Leonard and Kauai Voices ain’t fooling around. Their upcoming concerts will be great music. We ain’t kidding. Expect nothing less from a show that’s called, “Ain’t that Great Muusic!” “It’s a light fun show with great music,” said Leonard, artistic director of the group. The auditioned choir of more than 30 voices will treat
audiences to songs of ragtime, spirituals, musicals, pop, jazz, rock/blues, swing, and choral classics. Concerts are 7:30 p.m. June 17 and 18 and 3 p.m. June 19 at St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church. Each song will have a common theme: The entire show is comprised of music using the word “ain’t” — and we ain’t kidding about that!” “There’s the word ain’t in
them somewhere,” Leonard said. Only one song doesn’t have the word ain’t in it, and that’s from the musical, “Ain’t Mishaving.” “Music is collected from multiple genres to create a show that ain’t soon to be forgotten,” says a press release. Leonard said each season has a different theme. Past themes include “Simply the Best,”“Made in the USA,” and

STEEL GUITAR, HAWAII SOUND GOOD TOGETHER
A
side from the ukulele and slack key guitar, Hawaiian steel CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS guitar is one of the iconic SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY sounds of Hawaii. But where did it come from? How did Hawaii become associated with steel guitar? What was the cultural impact of it, both in Hawaii and the rest of the world? Professor John W. Troutman has the answers. His research was extensive and also had interviewed many talented musicians, of which we saw many of these extraordinary Kauaian musicians in our bookstore when John was here doing a book signing! John was humbled and honored by their visit to his book signing! “Kika Kila: How the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Changed the Sound of Modern Music” is a 372-page highly-researched history that includes a bevy of black and white photographs that probably most have never seen, as well as several high-detail color images of historic (and highly influential) Hawaiian Slide Guitars.

Troutman’s writing style is so engaging that it feels as if we were privy to conversations that spanned three centuries. We get to learn about those that pioneered the instrument in Hawaii, and how the sound of the instrument transformed over the generations. It brought together peoples from all walks of life and backgrounds, sharing their sounds with each other over time. In fact, the last fourth of the book is filled with research notes and bibliography, showing how meticulous Troutman was in making sure that he was presenting the most accurate information available. Pretty fascinating stuff, even for those of us that might only have a passing curiosity. For those that do know this art, this book is an absolute treasure and an invaluable addition to any personal library of the history of Hawaiian music and musicians. ••• A Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of P The Bookstore in Hanapepe.
