‘I feel like I’m 16’ Charlie Musselwhite brings the blues to Kauai

C

harlie Musselwhite doesn’t need to travel and play music. This is a guy who has been inducted into the Blues Music Hall of Fame. So accomplished as a musician, he has received 35 Blues Music Awards, 11 Grammy nominations and a win in 2014. Such is the respect for his abilities, he played at the White House on July 25,

2013. He and Cyndi Lauper performed “Try a Little Tenderness.” “I knew everybody there,” he said, laughing. “It was like old home week at the White House.” Charlie Musselwhite’s career has spanned nearly five decades. He is described as having “truly earned legendary status as one of blues music’s most important artists.”

And yet, even at the age of 71, when he could easily relax at one of his homes in Sedona, California or Clarksdale, Mississippi and just enjoy the sunshine on his face, Musselwhite loves life on the road. It keeps him young, he said. “I feel like I’m 16,” he said during a phone interview with The Garden Island on Wednesday.

Musselwhite will bring his youthful ways, his harmonica and his band to Hawaii for a three-island stop, including the Kauai Beach Resort in the Jasmine Ballroom on Nov. 27. “I have lots of old friends to see and catch up,” he said. Musselwhite travels 250 days a year. He sees new places, meets new people, SEE CHARLIE, PAGE 6

Brunches of biscuits and gravy, or quiche and organic salad greens from the North Shore, are two other new additions to The Right Slice’s menu. “We wanted to provide another option for breakfast, so we went with biscuits and gravy and quiche because the way those are made are so similar to pie crust,” Poehnelt said. “And we added the organic salad greens as just another option as well.” The goal, Poehnelt said, is to have a place where people can drop by and pick up meals on the go. “We have different meal options on the menu; like, for example, you can get four different flavors of pot pies with drinks for the family’s beach day and everybody is happy,” Poehnelt said. The Right Slice has a store in Kalaheo and just opened

For the next few weeks, Poehnelt and her staff will be all about pumpkin filling, cranberries, walnuts and apples. They’ll be taking pie orders up until Saturday. “After that, we’re cutting off the pie orders so we can get all of our supplies and get ourselves organized,” Poehnelt said. “We don’t hire on any seasonal help for this because we’re really focused on quality, so our staff works so incredibly hard during Kylie Kane pushes a crust into this time of year.” a pie tin for a baby pie. her best when she’s making those holiday pies, and the idea of taking a few days off after the Thanksgiving rush is enough incentive to get through. The most popular holiday pie is the Cranberry Walnut Pudding Pie. Poehnelt said that as Christmas approaches, The Right Slice will be releasing its ever-popular chocolate mint and eggnog pies. “My favorite out of all of them, though, is the Island Lemon,” Poehnelt said. “I don’t have too much of a sweet tooth, and this pie is tart and fresh.” The Island Lemon Pie is a basic lemon meringue pie

with a twist — there’s no meringue. “The meringue wasn’t holding up at the farmers’ markets at the beginning, so we took it out and put a top on the pie,” Poehnelt said. “With the Meyer lemons being in season right now, it’s perfect, and it’s a little bit different kind of lemon pie.” It was at the farmers’ markets that Poehnelt’s business first began to pick up steam six years ago when she started The Right Slice. “I had moved here and was working for a cafe, and part of my job was making the apple pie,” Poehnelt said. “People kept saying that it was the best pie ever and

they couldn’t get that kind of homemade pie anywhere anymore.” The job at that little cafe didn’t work out for Poehnelt, but pie did. “I really didn’t want to take a job off the market having just moved here, and I thought, I can make pie,” Poehnelt said. “So I made pie.” Both of The Right Slice’s stores are open six days a week, and on Sunday for brunch. You can also grab a piece from stands at various farmers’ markets throughout the island, and at Hanapepe’s Friday Art Night. The Right Slice also sells pie at both the Kapaa and Kilauea Saturday Art Nights.

He listened to old blues records and practiced. “As a little kid, I would just make up stuff on it,” he said. “I’d go out in the woods and started making up my own blues. That’s how I started playing.” The harmonica, Musselwhite said, is the only instrument you cannot see how it is played. Every other instrument, you can see it, watch it. Not so with the harmonica. So he played. “I just soaked it up,” he said. And he became very, very good. Enough to where it got him in the door to meet blues legend Muddy Waters. apaa High School football will be kicking off at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Aloha Stadium on Oahu against Radford High School for the championship of the First Hawaiian Bank Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state football. The Warriors improved on its 9-0 season by defeating Lahainaluna Saturday before a wildly cheering home crowd at Vidinha Stadium. Kalena Harder, a junior varsity bring-up, pulled for a

net gain of 98 yards, including three touchdowns, to lead the Kapaa win. The Warrior defense, led by Akauola Tatofi with eight unassisted tackles, held the Lunas to negative yardage on offense while Kapaa improved to scoring 250 points while allowing no scores since its second preseason game. A victory at Aloha Stadium will bring the gold to Kauai for the first time since the HHSAA started keeping records in 1999.
