here’s nothing little about Hawaii Children’s Theatre production of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr. A total of 45 “summer stars — ages 8 to 16 — have been rehearsing for five weeks in anticipation of the July 12 premiere, led by director Maile Speetjens. “I can’t think of a better piece, Speetjens said, noting that the students are able to relate to a life surrounded by the ocean. The musical is based on the
2008 Broadway production of the musical, which used the 1989 animated film as inspiration. It includes the classics — such as “Under the Sea and “Kiss the Girl — plus three new songs from the Broadway show. During a Tuesday rehearsal at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse, the mini Broadway performers ran through multiple song and dance numbers. Students — some dressed as mermaids with pipes for tails — waved long pieces
of blue fabric to emulate the ocean, mimicked a ship in the midst of a lightening storm and pretended to be swimming in an underwater kingdom. “I’m constantly impressed how focused and dedicated each child is, Speetjens said during a rehearsal Tuesday. “Each child puts in 110 percent. The show is the culmination of the efforts of the Summer Stars afternoon workshops, which teaches students how to present a musical. ‘Mermaid’ double casts Athena
Alexander and Jessica Palmer as Ariel and Chloe Rudinoff and Kilinoe Garcia as Ursula. “It’s cool to see the different character interpretations, Speetjens said. “It also means people can come and watch two shows and have two totally different experiences. Speetjens, an HCT alumnus herself, said she has been with the Summer Stars since its inception in 2001. “Hawaii Children’s Theatre was already a big part of my life in middle school and high
school, Speetjens said. “I feel it’s important to pay it forward. I make sure to come back every summer to show the students what I learned. Speetjens currently works as a a costume professor at Colorado State University. Before that, she attended Emerson College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in musical theater, and then received her master’s in costume design from the University of Georgia, Athens.
The Summer Stars program is designed to give students the opportunity to participate in a play from auditions to performance, plus learn theatrical skills, including stage etiquette, improvisation, scene study and character expression through choreography. Tickets to “Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr. are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Visit www.hawaiichildrensthatre.com or call 246-8985 for details.

ocated in old Kapaa town, Buttery offers patrons something tasty, something cute and something different from other cafes on the island. “We want everyone who comes in (to) feel comfortable and feel like family, said Jade Brooks, co-owner of Buttery. Inside, the windows are decorated with pink curtains, the walls are lined with art exclusive to Buttery and the
music is themed to match the European atmosphere Buttery conveys. Initially, I thought (like many others) Buttery was named because of butter. Butter is a main ingredient in baking, so I thought it made sense. I asked owners Jade Brooks and Smazana “Biba Velickovic about the name. They looked at each other, and Velickovic said to Jade, “Tell ‘em the story — it’ll be funny. “The name ‘buttery’ comes from a
group of my friends from California, Brooks said. “If they thought a girl was attractive or pretty, they would say, ‘Wow, she’s buttery.’ When I came up for the name, I thought it was perfect because we typically use a lot of butter in European cuisine and because of the story — how (my friends) referred to everything (as) pretty. The desserts and pastries created at Buttery are “buttery, for sure. All the
recipes for the desserts and pastries are from Velickovic, Brooks and patrons, who gave suggestions. “A lot of the things, Jade and I created on our own, Velickovic said. “We just kind of blend it depending on how we feel. And people come up to us with things they want to see and we do it, and it’s fun to create that relationship. Velickovic started baking in 1993. This week’s drink is the Pink Chocolat Chaud, a new beverage that has yet to appear on the menu. After the co-owners of Buttery prepared this unique hot chocolate, I sat down and they explained the process of creating this delicious delight. “We actually take white, Belgium chocolate first and tint it with strawberry fruit puree, said Jade Brooks, co-owner of Buttery. “Then we take frothed milk and pour it over the pink chocolate, co-owner Smazana “Biba Velickovic and Brooks said the Pink Chocolat Chaud will make its first appearance on Sat-

‘THE LONE RANGER’ IS A RUNAWAY TRAIN
Johnny Depp as Tonto, left, and Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger, in a scene from ‘The Lone Ranger.’

here’s a limit, it turns out, to how much Johnny Depp and a bucket of makeup can accomplish. In “The Lone Ranger,” Gore Verbinski’s flamboyant re-imagination of the hokey long-running radio show and ‘50s cowboy TV series, Depp eagerly attempts to recreate the extravagant magic of his similarly farcical Jack Sparrow of Verbinski’s “Pirates of the Caribbean.” With cracked white and black streaks down his face and a dead crow atop his head, Depp’s Tonto (whose look makeup artist Joel Harlow took from the Kirby Sattler painting “I Am Crow”) appears more witch doctor than warrior. One would think that a so-costumed Depp careening through the Old West with Buster Keaton aplomb would make “The Lone Ranger,” at worst, entertaining. But Verbinski’s film, stretching hard to both reinvent an out-of-date brand and breathe new life in the Western with a desperate onslaught of bloated set pieces, is a poor locomotive for Depp’s eccentric theatrics. For 2 1⁄2 hours, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced “Lone Ranger” inflates, subverts and distorts the conventions of the Western until, in an interminable climax, the big-budget spectacle finally, exhaustingly collapses in a scrap heap of train wreckage. “The Long Ranger” is, alas, a runaway train. A filmmaker of great excess, Verbinski’s ricocheting whimsy here runs off the rails. Flashback-heavy plot mechanics, occasionally grim violence (bullets land in bodies with the loudest of thwacks, a heart gets eaten) and surrealistic
Johnny Depp as Tonto in a scene from ‘The Lone Ranger.’ comedy add up to a confused tone that seems uncertain exactly how to position Depp’s Tonto in the movie, to say nothing of Armie Hammer’s wayward Lone Ranger. The film begins with an elderly, leathery Tonto (also Depp, nearly unrecognizable) at a 1933 San Francisco fair where, under a sign labeled “noble savage,” the old Native American regales a young, masked Lone Ranger fan (Mason Cook) about his adventures with John Reid (Hammer). Previously the sidekick, Tonto plays the starring role in the story, narrating a tall tale of his coming together with Reid, a district attorney who arrives in the frontier town of Colby, Texas, with high ideals of justice and a
copy of John Locke’s “Treatise on Government” under his arm. The lawman is made a Texas Ranger when the criminal Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner, ashen and sinister) escapes. The pursuit takes on urgency when Cavendish massacres the rest of the Rangers (including Reid’s brother, played by James Badge Dale), leaving Reid and Tonto to navigate a familiar mid-19th century Old West — the coming railroad, mining development and Indian warfare — with familiar types like the intrepid tycoon Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson) and a one-legged madam (Helena Bonham Carter). Stepping into Clayton Moore’s boots, the tall, baritone Hammer never looks at ease. While
he exudes the Lone Ranger’s earnest wholesomeness, he’s understandably an uncertain straight man alongside Depp’s slapstick. Having to wear a white Stetson and mask in his first starring role feels like yet another humiliation for the Winklevoss twins Hammer memorably played in “The Social Network.” The most laudable aspect of “The Lone Ranger” is that it attempts to dispel and mock Hollywood’s past Native American ills. Depp, who has claimed he has some Cherokee ancestry, delights in upending false images of Indian mysticism, all the while tossing bird seed to the dead crow on his head. But “The Lone Ranger,” which was made with much of the “Pirates” team including screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, along with “Revolutionary Road” adapter Justin Haythe, can only be filed alongside “Cowboys and Aliens” and “Wild, Wild West” as ornate films that are so nervous about the modern appeal of the Western that they ruin it by impulsively overstuffing it. The Coen brothers’“True Grit” and the 2007 remake of “3:10 to Yuma” better understood the genre’s inherent terseness. When Verbinski was last directing and Depp was a cartoon lizard, they crafted a far better Western in “Rango.” “The Lone Ranger,” a Walt Disney release, is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence, and some suggestive material. Running time: 149 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

avish! How else jazz and blues lovers on Kauai would describe being treated to a week of this raw, independent and straight-to-the-soul all-American music? Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers closed this year’s Red Clay Jazz Festival at Kauai Lagoons Sunday evening with a performance that will be hard to match when Kauai again becomes all that jazz and blues next summer. “I’ve got the best band in the world, Smith said after her show, while signing CDs of her band. The Red Hot Skillet Lickers lift Smith’s bluesy voice to a higher level, with a natural, unprocessed sound that would stand on its own in any venue in the world, be it in the iconic Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland to the nostalgic Free Jazz Festival in Rio de Janeiro, which from 1985 to 2001 featured legends such as Miles Davis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, BB King, Al Green, James Brown, Etta James, Nina Simone, Chick Corea, Sarah Vaughan and Stanley Jordan. The performance from Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers was nothing short of extraordinary. The San Francisco-based musicians put on the Ritz on the 6th edition of the Red Clay Jazz Festival, with a repertoire that took the audience on an imaginary trip to obscure basement bars, lively dance halls and backyard parties around the United States. “Let’s go to Kansas City, she told the crowd, which included Mayor Bernard Carv-
alho Jr. and his wife, Regina Carvalho. But Smith’s music didn’t stop in Kansas; it went to Tennessee, New Orleans and also to the heart of many who love the music of the late Patsy Cline. Smith performed at least five versions from the 30-year-old singer, who died in a plane crash in 1963. Most in the audience chose to lounge on the grass, laying on beach towels or chairs, or sitting under a large tent. But a few uninhibited people took the grass as a dance floor and let it all out. Smith’s show was more than an ordinary concert. It was a treat to those who may now follow her career, as she sang many songs she hasn’t released yet. She and her band’s next album, featuring Cline’s songs, should be released later this year, she said. And to the new Lavay lovers, all three past albums from Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers can be found at www. lavaysmith.com. Sunday’s open air concert at Kauai Lagoons also featured Kauai Pro-Am Show Band, which opened the show, and the Maui Jazz Quartet. Both bands put an impressive performance to the crowd, priming them to Smith’s show. Prior to Sunday’s concert, the Red Clay Jazz Festival featured performances in different venues around the island, including Ron Margolis & Keoni Loa Jazz Quartet, The David Braun Group, Amit Heri Trio and Kirk Smart Quartet.
Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers perform during the closing day of the Red Clay Jazz Festival Sunday at Kauai Lagoons.

early 150 paddlers from at least half a dozen Kauai canoe clubs raced across the South Shore last weekend for this year’s annual Paddle Fest fundraiser for the Kukuiula Canoe Club. The June 30 event, which was held on for the first time in several years at the Kukuiula Small Boat Harbor, featured a total of three races that straddled the picturesque Poipu coastline. The longest race, a 15-mile course open to surf ski paddlers or outrigger canoe paddlers in individual, two-person or six-person teams, began at Kalapaki Beach in Lihue. The shortest race, a 2.5-mile course was open to stand-up paddlers, prone paddlers and outrigger canoe paddlers in individual or two-person teams, began at Poipu Beach. The decision to move the finish line from Poipu Beach Park added two miles to the long course and created a new, 4.5-mile course from Mahaulepu Beach to Kukuiula Harbor that was only open to expert stand-up paddleboard and prone paddlers. For more information about the annual event, contact the Kukuiula Outrigger Canoe Club at kukuiulaoutrigger@gmail.com.
