CLASS IN SESSION

For those about to rock, we salute you. A box office hit, a popular Broadway production and now, on stage for the first time, “School of Rock” will be brought to the Kauai Memorial Convention Hall by the Hawaii Children’s Theatre on Friday, Nov. 11, and will run for three weeks until Sunday, Nov. 27. The film, written by Mike White which stars Jack Black as the lead character Dewey Finn, was adapted for the stage by Andrew Lloyd Webber who brought the movie to life on Broadway. And now, it’s going to be on stages across America for all to see. “I was six the first time I watched the movie and I fell in love with it,” said Pierce Bivens, who plays Dewey Finn in the play. “I loved Jack Black and I’ve loved everything he’s been in since then. Ed (Eaton) directed me in middle school and I loved working with him. He left after that which was sad, but then he came back to do this show and before I even knew it was School of Rock I wanted to do it to work with him again.” The play’s characters, as the contract for the production stipulates, are all under 18.

Webber’s ambition for the play was to push children onto the stage and find passion for theater, Eaton said. And for the play’s director, there’s nothing more gratifying than working with kids on stage. “I really love working with the youth,” Eaton said. “It’s a different experience, but it’s really exciting. I’ve loved the movie for many, many years and watching the play, you can really see how it translates to the stage. The movie is really about Dewey, and this keeps that, but this play will really show what the kids go through, more so than what the movie did and that’s the best part.” Bivens will lead the way as he teaches his students to “stick it to the man” and inspire his students to find their inner rock n’ roll. Joining him on stage is Taj Gutierrez, who will play Ned Schneebly, and Sabryn Rudinoff, who will portray Principal Rosalie Mullins. “I’m really excited,” Gutierrez said. “At first, I didn’t even know I wanted the role. But after some readings and call-backs, I fell in love with the part. I really relate to the part.

MARGARITA MAGIC Visit to Mariachi’s a delight

O

n Saturday, a friend and I were driving around Kapaa, trying to find somewhere to eat before heading to a Halloween party. Our first choice was closed, so we were at a loss for where to go. Usually, I’d just find somewhere else, but my friend is gluten-free and vegan, and there are only a handful of places she can eat. She suggested Mariachi’s Authentic Mexican Cuisine, and my first question was, “Can you eat there?” She said she wasn’t sure, but would make do. I think her plan was to fill up on chips and salsa if there wasn’t anything else on the menu. Turns out, there’s a section dedicated to veggie dishes, and she had her pick of four meals. She ordered the tacos de vegetal, which consists for two soft corn tortillas filled with sauteed vegetables and black beans.

orange concoction was placed at our table. At first, I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to drink it. But, after three glasses each, the pitcher was empty. A pitcher of margaritas at Mariachis’s is $32. It was worth it. Now, margaritas are not my usual drink of choice. I prefer rum to tequila, and usually only drink margaritas when I’m at a Mexican restaurant. I also exclusively order strawberry. But I will say Mariachi’s may have changed my mind about margaritas. It was smooth and flavorful, and I only tasted the tequila when we reached the bottom of the pitcher. Mariachi’s has two locations — one in Lihue and one in Kapaa. The Kapaa location is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, it is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Lihue spot is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

two locations! Enjoy a complimentary basket of fresh hot chips and a cup of salsa per table.

Happy Hour Daily 2 - 5 p.m.

In addition to Authentic Mexican Cuisine our menu also features Omelettes, Pancakes, and French Toasts as well as Club and Santa Fe Sandwiches, Vegetarian Burger and Mahi Mahi Sandwich. Across the street from Walmart is AT&T, from Kuhio Hwy 56 turn by the AT&T store on Ehiku St., then take the fourth right on Kanakolu St. At the end of the Kanakolu St. we are on the right side of the school.

Since I am fortunate enough to not have any dietary restrictions, I ordered the quesadilla ranchera, which is a flour tortilla with chicken and cheese and topped with ranchero sauce, sour cream and guacamole. The quesadilla was huge; it took up my entire plate. It was exactly what I needed to fuel up before a night of dancing at the Kapaa Neighborhood Center. But what is going to a Mexican dinner without ordering a margarita? At Mariachi’s, it’s not a matter of if you want a margarita, it’s a matter of choosing what flavor you want. Those of age get their pick of strawberry, midori melon, purple, avocado, mango and an assortment of other flavored margaritas. After perusing the drink menu, we decided to order a pitcher of mango margarita on the rocks. A few minutes later, a large pitcher filled to the brim with an

Concert Fest features middle school band, chorus LIHUE — The grounds of the recently dedicated Hilton Garden Inn Wailua Bay will be the setting for a free Concert Fest from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday. Hosted by the KMS Choir Booster’s Club, the event helps with the fundraising efforts to get the Kapaa Middle School musical group to the Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, California, during the spring. “This will be a totally busy day for us because we’re participating in the annual Veterans Day Parade,” said Mary Lardizabal, director of the Kapaa Middle School Ukulele Band and Chorus. “We

hope we’re near the top of the lineup because we shoot over to Wailua and open the doors to the Concert Fest.” On the entertainment lineup are hula performances by Kaliah Kaneakua and Tamateo Nui O Kauai. Musical presentations include Not My First Rodeo, Sam and Tristen Mahuiki; with sound provided by Hawaiian Muzik Factory. There will be vendors, games and food. “We’re truly grateful for the Hilton Garden Inn for making their site available to help us,” Lardizabal said.

R

eady for a surprise? Recently in our bookstore, we happened upon the book “The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss.” We couldn’t wait to open it! WOW! Sure, most of us are familiar with Theodor Geisel’s (Dr. Seuss) numerous children’s books with wonderfully wacky and whimsical artwork framing his unforgettable tales. Whether it be “The Cat in the Hat,”“The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,”“Green Eggs and Ham,” or any other of his memorable books, his artistic style was unique unto itself with its giddy yet strange-looking creatures, bizarre landscapes, and outrageous plants.

However, these adult works of art were personal, never shown to the public, stretching back to the 1920’s, and yet were the precursor to the children’s books first published we know today. Geisel’s personal art is a fascinating and intriguing array of satire expressed through differing styles and mediums. From pencil drawings, watercolor landscapes, surrealism, modernism, sculptures and beyond, his trademark whimsy is present throughout. Some of the most interesting ones (in our opinion) are his three-dimensional art pieces presented as hunting trophies! His attention to surface detail and especially the types of materials he used is truly fascinating! We also truly love his societal social commentary displayed through caricatures that border on the burlesque, with just the right blend of wit, parody and sarcasm. Delicious! Also, the palette of colors is quite vibrant compared to the muted tones of the children’s books. These works are certainly not for the little ones! There are adult themes all-throughout, which is what makes this

book so interestingly different from the Seuss artwork we all know. A special touch is the intimate introduction by Maurice Sendak, of “Where the Wild Things Are” fame, who was a friend of ‘Ted’ Geisel. Pick up this book; it’s worth the look! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

ROCK Continued from Page 3

excited than I am nervous.” Playing a main character on stage is a dream for many young actors, especially for Rudinoff, who was has been waiting patiently for her opportunity to grace the stage in a lead role. “It’s really, really fun,” Rudinoff said. “I was always in the ensemble that was in the high parts and I was always wanted a main part. But the adults usually get the main roles. But this is so different. I’ve had to step in really late, sometimes two hours before curtain to take someone’s place so I thought it was going to be really hard, but it’s been a breeze because I like this role and it’s really fun. When I watched the Broadway show, I just kept thinking how fun it would be to play Rosalie.”

Debra Blachowiak, the producer of School of Rock, is grateful for the opportunity to showcase Kauai’s young talent on stage. “It’s a state premiere, so it is really thrilling for us to do this. We had to go through an application process and be selected, but we feel very fortunate. The audience will be treated to extremely, high quality production. While it is a youth production, the kids are outstanding in their roles and I think they’ll enjoy it. I don’t want them to not come and say later, ‘Oh i can’t believe I missed that i heard it was so good!’ I don’t want that.” Tickets will be available from the cast and crew, at various outlets around Kauai, online at the HCT website, www. hawaiichildrenstheatre.org and at the door. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m.
