Gluten-free Garden Island
O
rdering gluten-free pasta sans meat and then asking my server to hold any cheese usually ends one of two ways at a restaurant. Either the server hands me a scantly populated gluten-free menu, or they provide me with a blank stare and a promise to check with the kitchen. That’s when I secretly wonder if they know what gluten is, and start imagining the havoc a bit of flour or soy sauce would wreak in my

body. But at Hukilau Lanai in Kapaa, the server not only knew the definition of my culinary nemesis, she told me if I had called ahead, the chef would have whipped up something like a quinoa-stuffed pumpkin. I looked over the menu after she described a few options for me, and soaked in the restaurant’s ocean view and live music with my dinner companion. Another server dropped some bread on the table and he told me it wasn’t gluten-free before it touched the table.

Chefs across Kauai can cater to celiacs, but it helps to call ahead I settled on spaghetti pasta with local vegetables and a red wine tomato sauce. It was the first thing I saw on the menu and instantly it inspired a craving for homemade, comfort food. That’s what I got, but with a twist. The base of the dish was an evenly cooked pile of pasta, with a light amount of sauce and diced tomato. Roasted cauliflower, broccoli and peppers were sprinkled throughout; and it was topped with fresh, local sprouts. A nostrum flower topped the dish. I couldn’t help myself, I ate that first and it tasted like a radish. Kapaa isn’t the only place on Kauai where I’ve found a gluten-free oasis;
JESSICA ELSE TGIFR!DAY there are actually dozens of restaurants on the island that can cater to celiac foodies. Merriman’s Fish House in Poipu is another restaurant that will whip up something custom if their chefs have enough time in advance. They work with local ingredients, have a fair amount of organic faire on their menu, and downstairs they serve a gluten-free pizza with a macadamia nut crumble that tastes like cheese. The server at Merriman’s warned
me the thin, crispy crust of their pizza isn’t completely vegan — it has a hint of buttermilk. Mushrooms and kale top are placed on top of a thin layer of red sauce and then the entire pizza is finished with a heavy scattering of their signature macadamia nut crumble. For dinner prices, the vegan pizza, as it’s named at Merriman’s, costs right around $17 and Hukilau’s pasta comes with a price tag in the $25 range. Both are worth every bite, and leave you feeling satisfied, but still able-bodied enough to wander around The Shops at Kukui’ula after dinner or go for a walk in Kapaa.

READY FOR A FANTASTIC TALE? CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
A
t our bookstore, people often recommend books to us. Some we have heard of and there are many we have not (which we quickly order in for the store). “The Girl Who Drank the Moon,” by Kelly Barnhill, was recommended to us by a customer (Thanks, E. L.!), and with its captivating tale, we knew this would be a good selection for our book review. “The Girl Who Drank the Moon” is a multi-award-winning young adult fantasy story that reads like a classic
fairy tale of old. People have compared it to Harry Potter, Peter Pan, and even the Oz stories. However, “Girl” is a magical tale very much of its own. In the Protectorate (the land where the story is set), there is a witch who does good that most everyone thinks is bad. This good/bad witch however has made a mistake. One of the children that the people of the Protectorate have put up for sacrifice (and as usual secretly saved by the same witch who instead fill the children with starlight and brings them elsewhere to families who will love them) has accidentally been filled with moonlight instead! This error imbues the little child Xan with a palpable creative magic that sets her apart from most people. The witch decides to raise Xan herself, and from there, Xan’s journey begins. With companions like a sagely swamp creature and a flitting friendly petite dragon, Xan’s life opens up to help a world she herself has barely ever known, with perils yet unimag-
inable to her. While this is written for middle-schoolers, people of all ages have become engrossed in the story’s world, the prose, and its numerous characters. It is an escape you will always remember! Enjoy the magic! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

Coming movies LOS ANGELES (AP) — This summer at the movies there will be aliens, evil and friendly, pirates, scantily-clad lifeguards, ladies letting loose, some classic superheroes in fresh suits, an evil mummy, two King Arthurs and a few very different war films. Here’s a rundown some of May’s highlights. Dates are subject to change. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (May 5) — Chris Pratt’s Star Lord and his band of misfits, including a toocute Baby Groot, return for some more intergalactic adventures — and heartfelt family drama — set to another toe-tapping mixtape. “Risk” (May 5) — Laura Poitras takes on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in a documentary that includes recent developments from U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “The Dinner” (May 5) — Laura Linney, Richard Gere, Steve Coogan and Rebecca Hall gather for a tense meal to discuss what their sons have done in this thriller. “Chuck” (May 5) — Liev Schreiber plays the real man who inspired “Rocky” in this boxing drama. “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” (May 12) — The classic Excalibur tale gets a kinetic reimagining from director Guy Ritchie, with Charlie Hunnam as Arthur. “Snatched” (May 12) — A freewheeling daughter, Amy Schumer, and her uptight mother, Goldie Hawn, get kidnapped on vacation in this raucous comedy. “The Wall” (May 12) — With an Iraqi sniper in shooting distance, two American soldiers try to survive. John Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson star in the Doug Liman pic. “Paris Can Wait” (May 12) — A picturesque French travelogue starring Diane Lane and Alec Baldwin as a married couple on the rocks, from Eleanor Coppola. “Alien: Covenant” (May 19) — Director Ridley Scott takes audiences on a new terrifying trip to space with Katherine Waterston and Michael Fassbender. “Everything, Everything” (May 19) — A teen romance based on Nicola Yoon’s novel about a sick girl (Amandla Stenberg) unable to leave her home and her interested neighbor, Nick Robinson. “Wakefield” (May 19) — An ordinary suburban man, Bryan Cranston, disappears suddenly, but continues observing the life and family he left. Based on an E.L. Doctorow short story.
