K
auai Community Players presents an American classic, “The Rainmaker” by N. Richard Nash, directed by Bard Widmer. The Rainmaker” opens May 6 and plays for three weekends through May 22, Fridays and Sature days at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse. “The Rainmaker” is a dramatic comedy taking place on a ranch at the time of a paralyzing drought. It focuses on Lizzie Curry (Rebecca Hanson), a plain girl whose brothers (Jim Warrack and Bailey Hutton) try every possible scheme
to marry her off, but without success. Nor is there any sign of relief from the dry heat, when suddenly from out of nowhere appears Starbuck (Ian Foster), a charismatic, sweet-talking man with quite the sales pitch. Claiming to be a “rainmaker,” Starbuck promises to bring rain for $100. He is so refreshing and persistent that the family finally consents. Foster, who plays Starbuck, has been performing since he was 5. “I’ve acted throughout my life, college, after college. I wanted to get back

Getting into character can be hard. “Starbuck and I relate to a general sense, we both are a people person and interact well with people,” Foster said. “It allows me to expand on my range of character development.” Hanson hasn’t been on stage for years. WHEN ‘TWAIN MEETS TITA’
One night comedy show on May 3 at KCC
T
o celebrate the sesquicentennial of Mark Twain’s 1866 visit to Hawaii, Maui’s Kathy Collins and Nevada’s McAvoy Layne will present “Twain Meets Tita” in a May barnstorming tour of the Sandwich Islands. This powerful show could well be subtitled, “Satire Meets Attitude.” Employing wit, wisdom and humor, the Island Tita of 2016 will attempt to drag the Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope into the 21st century. Where Twain’s price of land on Maui was as little
as one dollar an acre, Tita insists that dollar today will get you “not even one bag sand.” In honor of Mother’s Day, as an added attraction at no extra cost, Collins and Layne will read from “The Diaries of Adam & Eve,” in period dress (Twain’s period, not Adam’s). “Twain Meets Tita” hits Kauai for a one night showing on Tuesday, May 3, at Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. In February, Collins and Layne tested the waters with a reception in Nevada.
CHLOE MARCHANT TGIFR!DAY “It was gratifying, heartwarming and encouraging,” Layne said when asked about how the tour came about. Layne has portrayed Mark Twain for the past 28 years, in over 4,000 performances from Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City to Leningrad University in Russia. Collins began performing on stage at the age of 13 and started her broadcast career at 17. “My happiest moments in high school were spent on stage and competing in speech tournaments,” Collins said. A STEINBECK CLASSIC CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
T
his week is a classic! “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck is considered one of his best novels. In fact, Steinbeck himself considered it his magnum opus! So what makes this book, compared to his other well-known titles such as “Of Mice and Men” and “The Grapes of Wrath”, so lasting and profound? Fact is people year after year, of all ages, when they discover this book, comment on how much of an impact it made on their life. Truly, it is for this very reason why Steinbeck’s works are considered “classics.”
The story takes place amidst the background of farmland America at the turn of the 20th century, spanning the Salinas Valley in California. Regardless of its Americana setting, the impact that this story makes is due to the characters, and some have stated that these are the most interesting characters ever written. The interweaving family dynamics that force the destinies of these two families to be bound together (the Trasks and the Hamiltons) is the heart and soul of this tale. The overarching theme stems (as one can tell by the title) from the Judeo-Christian story of the fall from Eden and the rivalries that occur between the family of Adam, but Steinbeck in his unmatched ability expounds upon this further and fleshes out the deep and personal motivations and outcomes

of all the characters involved. To this day, it remains a bestseller. Not only was it picked up by Oprah’s Book Club a decade ago, it was adapted into film and television presentations as well (the former starring James Dean) and there is still plans in the works for another film adaptation. For a book that sells tens of thousands of copies every year since 1952, we suggest to read it yourself and find out why! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are the owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

The criteria for the doggie version made for some interesting twists in the game in which people scramble for remaining chairs when the music stops. “I should have brought my dog,” said Ron Wiley, the emcee for the fundraising event for the Kauai Humane Society. “He has a very strong wag and would’ve taken the
