ight local chefs will clash their cutlery Saturday in a competition with an island-style twist, each dish will feature coconut as an ingredient. But using coconut isn’t the only challenge in The Tasting Kauai Coconut Cook Off. Chefs will be randomly paired into four teams and will have to answer coconut trivia questions to win ingredients. The competition is one h of the events kicking off the 20th annual Coconut Festival, and the professionals will put culinary genius to the test in front of a panel of five judges. “You only turn 20 once, so we’ve got this big thing with chefs organized to make it more interesting,” said Mike Hough, who is leading organization of the festival. “You’ll have panels of people competing against each other and swapping tasks.”
Kap Teo Tafiti thrills the audience with his coconut antics during the 2015 Coconut Festival
The competition will be something akin to the television shows Top Chef and Chopped, Hough explained, and those who attend the cook off and donate at least $1 to the Hawaii Food Bank have a chance to be a judge. Other community members have a chance to claim coconut chef bragging rights through another competition. “We’ve got a section where people who are intentionally not professional chefs can bring down anything they’ve made that’s linked to coconuts,” Hough
said. “It could be coconut flakes or milk or whatever, but it has to be something they’ve made themselves.” The Tasting Kauai Chef Cook-Off begins at 12:30 p.m. and goes until 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Coconut Festival begins with an opening ceremony at 9:15 a.m. on the main stage at Kapaa Beach Park. Music and dance follows by various performers throughout the day, along with a pie eating contest and cooking demonstrations. Sunday features fire knife dance and coconut

Clues lead to a great read CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
A
loha, readers! Do we have a book for you! A time-traveling professor, a missing cat, ghosts, electric monks, and a spaceship with aliens! Goodness! Well, not only do you get to read this book but it is coming to television at the end of October! The book, “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” is a humorous novel by Douglas Adams. It is a good chance you may have heard of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by British author Douglas Adams (or perhaps the Hollywood movie version). For author Douglas Adams, the extraordinary success of his first zany-science-fiction-comedy novel opened the door for him to tell an array of other equally-wacky stories,
and this is one! This part-science-fiction, part-fantasy, part-comedy, part-something is a very, very quirky tale set on Earth, where the strange and unusual collide. One young man, Dirk Gently (who
owns a detective agency), sets out to solve a mystery of a missing cat which amazingly leads to his interaction with a time-traveling professor whose room is actually a time-machine, ghosts who influence classical literature, and even aliens from millions of years ago whose spaceship blew up on the Earth and accidentally created the human race! The mystery keeps thumping along as Dirk Gently’s applies his method of the “fundamental interconnectedness of all things” to bring together these odd and disparate parts. Fans of the BBC television show “Doctor Who” might be fascinated to learn that not only was Douglas Adams the series story editor for a year on the show, but two of those episodes became the genesis that inspired the creation of this stand-out novel. Ready for a fantastic adventure? Pick this book up. It is sure to be a ride that you’ll never forget! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

ami Lin Kihenepualehuamakanoe Ofisa, 10 will portray Hawaiian Princess Victoria Ka’iulani (1875-1899) at this year’s Princess Ka’iulani Keiki Fest in Hanapepe on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Ofisa is a sixth-grade student at Ken Yen Learning Center and a member of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina’ala. She will be entering the event on “Skyboy,” a gentle horse provided by Lorna Ouderkirk Her portrayal will include lovely costumes, leading the children’s parade, a hula, reading a storybook, and being the guest of honor at her own birthday party in Storybook’s Sparky’s Garden. The event is free and open to the public. Families will enjoy safe and secure event locations at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church and Storybook Theatre in Hanapepe as the road will be closed. The church will be offering a food court with local food. Parade costumes in all creature shapes and sizes will be provided at no cost to the children. Among the costume offerings are the beautiful forest bird capes donated by Koke’e Natural History Museum for the event parade and the Nylon Zoo costumes made especially for Storybook Theatre’s children’s events by international festival artist Evelyn Roth of Adelaide, Australia. There will be other hands-on activities for young people provided by area nonprofit organizations. Special Keiki Fest guests include an opening Oli by Kumu Kauai’iki, Joyful Noise Taiko drummers, parade percussionists Cary Valentine and friends, Mistress of Ceremonies Mauliola Cook and this year the event will host the Scottish bagpipe player Greg Ellsworth in honor of Princess Ka’iulani’s Scottish heritage. Sports teams, cheer-leading squads, scouts and other children’s organizations are encouraged to enjoy Kauai’s only children’s street parade in historic Hanapepe town. Children are invited to attend Princess Ka’iulani’s Birthday Party in Sparky’s Garden with cake, games and prizes for her highness and everyone else who comes out.
