hen Fran Kalb directed Kauai Shorts put on by Women in Theatre last year, she was hooked. “I got bitten by the bug, and I was inspired to write a play for them,” she said. It took Kalb about a month to write “Sophomore Girls,” which was inspired by three WIT actors — Jennifer Cullen, Candace Kepley and Mo Sharpe.

“It’s so well-written for us that we don’t have act,” Kepley said. The comedy is about three women— Katherine Shaw, Anise Garcia and Flo DeLucca, who become friends and realize that life after retirement is a blank page, just waiting to be written. SEE WIT, PAGE 6

or the second straight year, the Royal Hawaiian Band will be performing on Kauai. Bandmaster Clarke Bright said bringing the musical group over for a concert on The Garden Isle was an easy call. First, they were invited and were more than happy to accept. And two, they love the appreciation they receive when playing on one of the neighbor islands. There is nothing but harmony. “It’s a joy to be able to be part of that,” Bright said. “It’s a joy, an absolute joy.” The RHB concert is scheduled 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Prince Kuhio Park. It is free. Musicians Triple T and Brother Noland will take the stage first. The band will play about 10 songs in an hour. Last year’s concert attracted an estimated 1,000 people. Then, tickets were $10. With no charge this time, expect

another large crowd to see the Royal Hawaiian Band, which is an agency of the City and County of Honolulu. It was founded in 1836 by King Kamehameha III and is the only band in the United States with a royal legacy. Its mission is to promote and foster music, and inspire young musicians. Chucky Boy Chock, one of the event organizers and a show emcee, said they received donations from South .Shore hotels and others to cover the cost of transportation and food for the band, which arrives Saturday morn, ing and leaves that night. “That was a big help,” he said.

It was Chock who came up with the idea of bringing the Royal Hawaiian Band to Kauai last year when he was visiting in Kekaha and listening to kupuna talking about the old days. “I asked, ‘How many of you have ever seen the Royal Hawaiian Band?’” he said. Two raised their hands. “Would you guys want to see them again?” Chock asked. Yes, came the answer, “but it’s too expensive to go to Honolulu.” So they brought the band to Kauai. It will be the last performance at Prince Kuhio Park, too. It is a fragile area that

must be protected, Chock said. “We don’t want to overuse it,” he said. About 40 band members will be traveling over for the concert.

and leaves people in a mood to sing. “I am so blessed to be able to work with some of Hawaii’s finest musicians,” he said. The RHB is busy, performing in more than 300 concerts and parades each year. It rarely leaves Oahu, but Kauai is special. “Knowing how well it went last year, we’re willing to come back again this year,” Bright said. The concert is sponsored by the Kauai Museum, the Club at Kukui‘ula, the Royal Order of Kamehameha (Kaumuali‘i Chapter), the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and the City and County of Honolulu.

Bright said they are planning some special songs, medleys and surprises, including one number they didn’t play last year. As well, there will be a vocalist, hula dancer and they will be fea-

turing a vocalist, “Lady Jane,” from Kauai, too. “We’re kind of upping it a little bit this year,” he said. The performance features traditional music, but it’s also about community service and sharing Hawaiian history. “What we’ve noticed is the amount of recognition and appreciation is great on the neighbor island,” Bright said. “They don’t get a chance to see us that often, but they know how important the band is to the Hawaiian culture.” Bright said it’s always an honor to lead the Royal Hawaiian Band, which has an impact wherever it performs

THIS ‘SECRET’ SHOULD BE SHARED

WIT Continued from page 3

“Inspired by Jennifer, Candace and Moe from the shorts, I knew I had to write something for the three of them,” Kalb said. “Sophomore Girls,” which opens today, is Kalb’s debut as a playwright. “Anything artistic and creative is a part of who I am. I’ve done writing before, but it’s not my main thing,” she said. “Sophomore Girls” is divided into two acts. It is a staged reading, with few props and costumes. Because of that, it presents a challenge because actors like the fanfare and drama of a full production, said Nellie Foster, director. “It’s hard to contain actors because they want props and costumes,” she said. “But the staged reading allows the focus to be on the material, not what’s going on around it.”

Jenna Carpenter / The Garden Island

From left: Jennifer Cullen, Richard Porto, Candace Kepley, Patric Knight, Moe Sharpe and Romey Curtis take a group photo before rehearsing for “Sophomore Girls” Saturday.

Producing staged readings is a way around not having a big performance space, said Romey Curtis, WIT founder. “We lost our theater last year, so it’s hard to find a space for production,” she said. “We want to keep WIT alive, and this is a way we can do that.” It’s part of WIT’s mission to highlight local talent, Curtis said. “We like to support local authors, which is important to us, being the furthest

away from Broadway.” On Saturday, six of the actors in “Sophomore Girls” met at Foster’s home in Kapaa for their fourth rehearsal. The actors included Patric Knight and Richard Porto, who play two of the three men in the performance. Sophomore Girls will be shown at the Church of the Pacific in Princeville 7 tonight, 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 online, $15 at the door.

CELEBRATING KAMEHAMEHA

W

arren Perry of the Royal Order of Kamehameha said it’s official as the group took its position behind the float carrying King Kamehameha and his court Saturday. The Order of Kamehameha I was established on April 11, 1865 by King Kamehameha V to honor the legacy of his grandfather, Kamehameha the Great, who unified the Hawaiian Islands. After resurfacing following the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani, the Royal Order of

Lani Costido

Kamehameha initiated and held the first observance of Kamehameha Day in 1904. This celebration honoring Kamehameha has continued every year to this day, and Kauai was no exception in taking time out of the state and city county holiday to honor Kamehameha with a day-long celebration, which included a floral parade with all of the Hawaiian Islands represented, and a ho‘olaule‘a on the grounds of the Historic County Building.
