Dragons & Mokan Nokan Beautiful Hawaii Roadshow rolls out on Saturday JESSICA ELSE TGIFR!DAY

T

he antics of the Mokan Nokan Beautiful Hawaii Roadshow will again grace the stage of the Kauai Performing Arts Center on Saturday. “It’s an entertaining variety show and it’s original, vibrant, wacky, crazy, beautiful; it’s got something in it for everyone,” said Jennifer Bell-Grey, who produces the show with her husband and the show’s creator, Mel Bell-Grey. Mokan and Nokan are alien characters that Mel created about seven years ago. As of January, the characters are a fixture on Channel 12, with their own kids’ television show. “It all comes out of our film studio in Nawiliwili,” Bell-Grey said. “And when you watch the TV show, Mel, he’s an actor alongside the puppets.” The show follows the story of two aliens Nayah Cornell & Zoie Zeitz perform in the Moka who have crash-landed in Poipu’s Gallery 103. Mr. Mel is the curator of the gallery, played by Mel Bell-Grey, and he finds the aliens. Mokan and Nokan have the ability to make anything they touch come to life, and they transport viewers to different times and places through paintings in the gallery. Pele and dragons, aliens and history; it’s all on the table at the Mokan Nokan Beautiful Hawaii Road Show. The show also brings in environmental lessons, like the impacts of trash in the ocean. “The motto of the show is ‘let your life be an inspiration,’” Bell-Grey said. Saturday’s KPAC show is a live performance of the TV show, she said, and it will be complete with 9-foot tall puppets, operated by two puppeteers each. The performances’ 60 dancers are students Photo courtesy of Jennifer Bell-Grey, taken by from the Kauai Dance Center, which Jennifer Susan Pang and Mel have been directing since 1998. and be exposed to something new,” Bell-Grey said. This performance of the Mokan Nokan Beautiful Hawaii Roadshow will be the 20th on Kauai, and the intent is to take it throughout the islands. “We’d probably do auditions when we do

take it to the rest of the islands, but right now it’s the Kauai Dance Center students performing,” Bell-Grey said. The Mokan Nokan Beautiful Hawaii Roadshow will be performed at 11 a.m. and at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 17 and under.

SHAMROCK SHAKEUP COMES IN GREEN

M

cDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii has supported Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii (RMHC-Hawaii) since it opened its first House in 1987. RMHC-Hawaii is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a home-away-from-home for seriously ill children and their families in Hawaii and the Pacific. On March 27, RMHC-Hawaii is commemorating its 30th anniversary, and to celebrate, McDonald’s of Hawaii will donate 25 cents from every Shamrock Chocolate Madness product sold from February 21 to March 20 to the organization. In 1974, McDonald’s ran a weeklong Shamrock Shake promotion with all proceeds going toward building the first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia, making the Shamrock Shake the inaugural fundraiser of Ronald McDonald House Charities. This year, McDonald’s has introduced a new line of seasonal McCafe beverages to their classic mint flavor Shamrock Shake

lineup, combining mint and chocolate to the Shakes, Frappes, Mochas and Hot Chocolate. The five mint chocolate beverages in the Shamrock Chocolate Madness include: 1. ShamrockChocolateMadnessPicShamrock Shake – This is our classic, smooth and creamy mint-flavored shake topped with whipped toppings and a cherry. 2. Chocolate Shamrock Shake – The perfect mix of mint and chocolate. 3. Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappe – Bits of chocolate chips, a hint of coffee and mint flavor. 4. Shamrock Mocha – Espresso with mocha and mint flavor. 5. Shamrock Hot Chocolate – Hot chocolate with a hint of mint.

The Shamrock Chocolate Madness fundraiser is just one of many ways McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii helps RMHC-Hawaii raise funds for families. McDonald’s restaurants throughout Hawaii include RMHC donation boxes at both the front counters and in the drive-thru. Change collected from these boxes goes directly to the organization. McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii has 82 restaurants and more than 5,200 employees in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan. In Hawaii alone, the company has 74 restaurants and more than 4,600 employees. McDonald’s total economic impact on the state yearly, directly and indirectly, is about $370 million in spending and nearly 12,000 jobs in the community. “

My My favorite, as it’s just a walk across the friend and racquetball champion Philip Eliana parking lot from The Garden Island offices, is the Lihue location on Kuhio Highway. It’s where has been there, and we catch up on his latest tournament or talk training. I usually end up. And, I hate to sound cheap, You get the idea. but when I go to lunch with people, I ask if they I like the Lihue McDonald’s for several would like to try McDonald’s because it’s spacious and you have plenty of room to carry on reasons: Room to talk; I meet people I know there and get news tips; the food is good and a conversation, which I like. And, it’s air-condi-

affordable; it’s a good place to read the paper and listen to Hawaiian music, and it’s close to work. Darlene Chung, owner, is often there, so it’s a chance to visit, too. Bottom line, it’s got a friendly, family vibe that can be hard to find. As well, it hosts fundraisers, like the recent Kapaa High School Project Grad that saw many of Kauai’s leaders pitching in to take and serve orders. Now, I know some folks are going to lecture me about how fast-food isn’t the most nutritious. All those fries and McDoubles likely are not the best for me and I do eat them in moderation. I’m also a firm believer that running many miles can wipe away a multitude of meals that I probably should not have eaten, but could not resist.

Bill Buley/The Garden Island

A crowd lines up at the Lihue McDonald’s.

I admit, I’m a fan of the latest meal deal at McDonald’s, a fish fillet sandwich, fries and drink for $5.99. And how can you beat a McDouble and chicken nuggets for $3 that’s offered in the 2 for $3 deal? You can’t. If you’re a visitor to Kauai, McDonald’s may not be your first choice for eats in Hawaii. But if you like quick, friendly service, stop in. If you like to talk story, stick around.

SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY Westermann is not even here Monday night as she supervised the installation of Big Brother at The Shops at Kukuiula. “H.C. Westermann passed away in 1981,” Stude said. “He’s not even here. But his lithograph, ‘An Affair in the Islands’ hangs in the office. That provided the impetus for the multi-generational survey of the island theme.” The exhibit, An Affair in the Islands, opened at galerie 103 Wednesday with an opening reception for the 14 participating artists Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit continues through May 30. Stude said An Affair of the Islands is Kauai’s voice to the Inaugural Honolulu Biennial which opens on Oahu. “This adds a whole new dimension to the space,” said artist Sally French who helped with the installation of Big Brother who has an eye on the world. “And, it’s not even finished, yet.” “It’s so hard when you have to select by yourself,” Stude said. “Sometimes, it goes a lot easier when you have a team.”
