Rotary hosts benefit concert to end polio to kick off the special occasion. With World Polio Day on Thursday, Oct. 24, Ron Margolis, president of the Rotary Club of Kapaa, said the idea was for each of the Hawaiian Islands to get together and do something to raise both awareness and money. “It feels like a good thing to put our heart, our care and our energy into,” he said. “It’s also a lot of fun that all five clubs are working together.”
The concert is sponsored by the five Rotary clubs on Kauai as part of Rotary International’s quest to eradicate polio from the planet, according to a release for the event. Since Rotary International began this program in 1985, the number of polio-endemic countries has decreased dramatically, from 125 to three. Polio, a disease that cripples children, was eliminated in the United States
in the 1950s by vaccination. During the Saturday event, Rotary Humanitarian Awards will be presented in each of five categories: Firefighter/water safety officer, police officer, healthcare worker, social worker and teacher. Net proceeds from the concert will be matched 2-for-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and will go to The Rotary Foundation’s Polio
Plus initiative. The concert takes place on national Make a Difference Day. “This is something kind of different for us,” Margolis said of the show. “I hope a lot of people come.” Tickets range from $40 to $75 per person and are available online at www.kauaiendpolionow.com. s I walked in Brick Oven Pizza in Wailua, the first though on my mind was that I am crashing a family party. I was welcomed with a smile to a red-and-white-pattern covered corner table. From there, I could observe families having dinner, smiling servers walking around talking story with their clients and I could hear laughter coming from the events wing. As I sat down, I wished I didn’t go alone — it almost felt inappropriate among the family parties of three or more. “It started as a small mom-and-pop kind of restaurant, and it grew into a successful business,â€? manager Kassie Tanigawa said. As one of the co-owner’s sister, Kassie seams proud of what her family and their partners have done. 1977 was the year that the first Brick Oven Pizza opened in Kalaheo by the Demas family. In March 2008 three families — Aguano, Gummerus and Rice (AGR Inc.) — took on ownership. On Dec. 15, 2008, AGR opened its second location at 4-361 Kuhio Highway, Wailua, Kapaa, where I dined. “They are a successful crew,â€? manager Tanigawa said. “It’s nice that this is a family restaurant, operated by Landon, Jacob, Johnathon and Keilin with the “Superâ€? Pizza.

fter switching owners in March 2008, the second location of Brick Oven Pizza was established in Wailua, Kapaa later the same year. A business that is operated by three families of friends — Aguano, Gummerus and Rice (aka AGR Inc.) — the restaurant definitely has a family feel. Besides a meal, customers can enjoy a sports bar atmosphere if they want. The bar and big-screen TV next to it had attracted a big gathering of people relaxing with friends, family, meal and a drink. “We are one of few places on Kauai that serves pitchers of beer, manager Kassie Tanigawa said about the restaurant. The daily happy hour is from 2 to 6 p.m. with pitchers being $10. As far as cocktails go, the “Bad- Ass Mojito I had was delicious and not too strong. Made with Bombay Sapphire Gin and fresh blueberries and strawberries, the drink was a refreshing end to a hot day. “I try to bring fresh fruit for the bar and experiment with new drinks, manager Tanigawa said, while bartender Koa Navarro, was making my drink along with a cucumber drink that wasn’t yet on the menu. The first location was previously run by the Demas family since 1977 in Kalaheo. Manager Kassie Tanigawa and bartender Koa Navarro.
three families of friends. If you are looking for a cozy environment, like I always am in a restaurant, you might be disappointed. The main hall is extremely big and with a few occupied tables on a Friday night, it felt empty. However, the bar, located in the middle of the establishment was completely occupied. With all the space available, I can see this being the perfect place for a class/family reunion, DJ or live band party. Some Fridays they do have local live music. “It is fun to see the regulars and catch up, server Wailana Cantere said. “I’ve been here since the restaurant opened and the owners have been very accommodating. The restaurant offers a variety of pizzas made on wheat or white dough with secret recipes for their homemade dressings and sauces, which have been passed to the new owners by the Demas family. One of their specialties is the garlic butter crust that you can get with any choice of pizza. If you like to have a taste of the restaurant but are not sure what to order, Mondays and Thursdays, from 5 to 9 p.m. are their buffet evenings. You can pick from the salad bar, pasta, spaghetti, wings, soups and assorted regular and dessert pizzas to name a few items.
Server Nicole Rapozo with the dessert pizza. The dessert pizza I had was a mix of their two kinds: Creamy Snickers pizza and cinnamon and sugar pizza (small $7.65, medium $9.50). Considering I have never had a sweet pizza, I was pleasantly surprised. The melted chocolate and caramel on the thin crust of the creamy Snickers did the trick.

f you saw Paul Greengrass’s “United 93, a terrifying depiction of one of the doomed flights on 9/11, you know this director can evoke a harrowing, real-life event like few others. In fact, you may not have recovered yet from the experience. So it’s no surprise that Greengrass has produced another expertly crafted, documentarystyle film based on a real event — the 2009 hijacking of a cargo ship by Somali pirates and the five-day standoff that ensued, with the ship’s American captain, Richard Phillips, held captive in a stifling covered lifeboat after offering himself as a hostage. A major difference is that this movie has a happy ending — for the captain, anyway, who was rescued in a dramatic high-seas Navy sniper operation. Three of the overmatched attackers were killed; the fourth is in a U.S. prison. More cinematically speaking, the difference is that “Captain Phillips is a star vehicle. In some cases, this can detract from the sense of veracity of a truth-based film. Tom Hanks, though, delivers some of his finest work here, playing the Everyman role he does so well, in this case a fairly ordinary guy forced by circumstance to be a hero. And yet “Captain Phillips is a remarkably unsentimental film, with an emotional catharsis coming only at the very end, when we’re all ready for some kind of release. This is where Hanks digs deepest as an actor. Oddly, the film falters only at the beginning — in a brief and awkward domestic scene between Phillips, preparing for what he assumes is a routine voyage, and his wife, Andrea (Catherine Keener, in a tiny part). The two share stilted dialogue on a drive to the
airport, with her asking: “It’s gonna be OK, right? and him commenting stiffly that the “world is moving so fast. But once Phillips gets onto his ship, the movie truly starts. What Greengrass excels at is action — taut and visceral — and it happens as soon as the captain suddenly looks at a screen and sees two small dots moving toward the ship. Two skiffs are carrying bands of armed men; from an early scene on a Somali beach, we know they’ve been whipped into action by their warlords. When they realize they’ve happened upon a U.S. ship, they can’t believe their luck. What WE can’t believe is how a huge cargo ship is so vulnerable to small bands of armed men. But the Maersk Alabama has no gun power aboard, only huge hoses to repel pirates and their machine guns. They don’t work. Soon, four pirates have hoisted a ladder onto the ship. “I’m the captain now, says their leader, Muse. And the ordeal begins. Greengrass and cinematographer Barry Ackroyd are at their most effective in scenes like the frightening search — in tense, dark spaces, in extreme closeup — by increasingly angry pirates hunting down the crew. On the other hand, this is where the camerawork gets ever more unstable and jittery. Good for dramatic effect — but bad if you’re susceptible to queasiness or nausea at such times. Be forewarned. Things get even more intense in the lifeboat, where the pirates are locked in with Phillips for several agonizing days. With the U.S. Navy bearing down, it’s pretty clear where it’s all headed. The only question: Who will die?

eo Woolford shares his experiences of growing up in Hawaii and learning hula in “The Haumana.” This week, the production is part of the Hawaii International Film Festival. “I am very, very happy with the turn out of the film,” said Woolford, the film’s director and writer. “I worked my butt off and I kept tweaking and

tweaking to make sure the film got the best results.” The film showed Thursday at Waimea Theater, and will be on the screen again 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the St. Regis Hotel Princeville. It was voted the best feature in this year’s HIFF. “It was the icing on the cake, more than anything. The reaction to the crowd from the premiere
made it perfect,”Woolford said. “It was a huge prize to get the award.” The independently produced film was shot entirely on Oahu and features an all-Hawaii cast, including Kelly Hu and Marlene Sai. “It is thoroughly entertaining, sheds light on our culture, and is a vehicle in which to share our Aloha spirit with the rest
of the world,” according to a press release. The storyline of the film goes like this: Jonny Kealoha (Tui Asau) is the charismatic host of The Polynesian Odyssey, a cheesy Waikiki luau show. To everyone’s surprise, he is appointed as the unlikely successor to a high school boy’s hula class when his former Kumu Hula (master hula teacher), Auntie Margaret
(Marlene Sai) passes away. “The journey follows Jonny, as he becomes just as much the student through the demands of leading the reluctant boys to a significant cultural event. Along the way, he rediscovers the sanctity of the culture he had previously abandoned,” a release said. For Woolford, it was gratifying to draw from his past and follow
his passion of film making.. “This story is based on my life, growing up in Hawaii learning hula,” he said. Woolford has more film projects in the works, but this one is special. “I feel so blessed and grateful to be able to share this film and experience with a culture I feel so proud to be apart off,” he said.
