Birth Continued from 3 “It’s really important they understand they will be changed by this,” she said. “It’s something beautiful, it’s something powerful, and it’s hard.” The entire process of pregnancy is a moment of preparation, Guimaraes said, for everything that parenthood will demand upon you later on — the challenges and the joys of being a mother or a father. “It’s a holistic vision of understanding that from the minute conception begins, you are growing a human being,” she said. “Your journey as a parent begins then.” Guimaraes, who has a 5-year-old son, pointed out that the premier is on Sept. 11, the anniversary of the terrorist attack. “It would be a nice thing to go out and see this film that is really about the strength of the ohana,” she said. People are drawn to infants, Guimaraes said, because they somehow remind us of
this essential part of the human journey. “If you are lucky in this life, you will be born again and again by the experiences you have and you will continue to grow,” she said. After the premier, Storybook Theatre plans to tour the island and present the video at schools and community centers free of charge, providing educators, parents and the public with vital information about child development and learning. Storybook will also facilitate public forums to encourage discussion of how best to help children and their families succeed in the early years of the child’s life. “Parents and caregivers generally want to be as knowledgeable as possible in this area, but they also do not have the time or luxury to study the latest research, they are busy providing and caring for new mothers their children,” said a press release. “Therefore, Storybook’s production advisers believe public viewings of the documentary video will be well-received on Kauai.” Tickets to the premier are $20 and will be available at the door.

That variety is evident on their menu, which encompasses things like black-eyed peas, collard greens, yams and potato salad, as well as salmon croquettes and fish plates, and avocado hummus wraps. Vegetable pancit is also thrown into the mix, as well as various smoothies and juices, coffee and freshly brewed teas. Neina said there’s one more thing involved in making fresh meals. “When you have passion for what you’re doing, and you add love into your food, that flavor comes from your love,” she said.
Eating organically and cooking with as whole-food ingredients comes naturally to both Neina and Dayne, because both of them grew up in families where meals were cooked at home regularly. “My mom had her garden and she taught us about moringa and ginger and lemongrass,” Neina said. “His (Dayne’s family) loves to cook, too.” Neina learned about the medicinal properties of many household herbs from her mother as well and she transfers that into the cafe’s menu. It was the desire to share the food from their own lifestyle, as well as a desire to share information about healthy living that spurred the couple to start the cafe. Utensils and take-out containers at cafe are compostable. The Greenery Cafe is open Tuesday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

re you ready to “boldly go where no man has gone before?” “Star Trek” is one of the longest-running science fiction franchises in history, and Sept. 8 marked its 50th anniversary. It has inspired countless inventors, scientists, engineers, astronauts, filmmakers, writers, and many others to achieve great things that were once only ideas. The original show spurred six spinoff television series, thirteen movies, and a host of merchandising products, including comics and books, and its many concepts have become part
of our cultural lexicon. Are you ready to discover (or re-discover) this iconic series? With 50 years of back story, we have the perfect book for you by DK publishers. “The Star Trek Book: Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained” is a fun and informative guide to the abundance of the “Star Trek” world and its history. For those who have heard of “phaser” or “warp drive” but don’t have any clue about what it really is (and don’t want to be bogged down with “technobabble” which us Star Trek geeks do love!), it is chock-full of great explanations and illustrations. The book covers the subjects such as the geography, history, and various timelines of the series, including maps, graphs, and high-quality vibrant-color images. These pages also cover what Starfleet is and its many starships,
