Waipa festival boasts creative takes on popular fruit

J

uicy tunes and creative takes on a local staple will take over Halulu Fishpond Sunday, Aug. 14, in a celebration of two island obsessions: mangoes and music. The event is the fourth annual Waipa Music and Mango Festival, hosted by the Waipa

Foundation and features Hawaiian and island-style music, arts and crafts and vendors. The day’s activities will be flavored with the mosaic of mangoes scattered throughout the festival. “We’ll have educational displays for the kids, farmers will be there that will have mangoes for purchase, and there will be vendors — a couple of artists and jewelry folks,” said organizer Kalen Kelekoma. But there’s more at stake than snagging a shady spot to catch a show or settling on a piece of jewelry made from island shells.

“We did a Navy entertainment tour about two years ago in Oahu, but this is our first time performing on Kauai and we’re really excited,” Keifer said about the upcoming performance. “We’re bringing a few of our songwriting buddies and our six-month-old son will be with us through the whole tour. It’s gonna be great.” The couple works together writing most of the lyrics. When it comes to where the inspiration comes from, Keifer said it comes from everywhere. “Certain situations that we’ve dealt with in life, help guide inspiration for new songs,” he said. “The birth of our son, has really contributed to some of those lyrics.” One of the duo’s hit song “If I Didn’t Have You” is a favorite for Keifer. “It came from a sad place in our life, and when you can relate to a song, it quickly becomes more than just music and is one of our favorites,” Keifer said in an interview. The band is set to release its third album through Stoney Creek Records later this year or early 2017, and said

RETURN TO MICHENER CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

A

loha, readers! Several times a day customers walk into our store asking “Do you have James Michener’s ‘Hawaii’?” “Of course we do!”, we reply. We also point out his “Tales of the South Pacific” which of course was made popular by a musical/movie as well (“South Pacific”)… and has continued to be performed in live-action stage performances (such as the ongoing “South Pacific” at the Kauai Beach Resort). But what we have found (by the comment of many a cus-

tomer) is that many readers are not aware that there was actually a sequel penned by Michener to “Tales…,” aptly entitled “Return to Paradise.: In “Return to Paradise,” not only do we, as the reader, get the opportunity to see how things unfolded from the events we left behind after “South Pacific.” “Return …” brings us to other tropical lands such as Fiji, Guadalcanal, New Zealand, and even Papua New Guinea, while providing a beautiful read through his skillful interweaving of reality and fiction. Worry not, dear reader,

c w e n

as Michener was a master of wordcraft, “Return to Paradise” can be read as a stand alone novel, as well! For those unfamiliar with Michener’s works (or even “South Pacific” as a film) and only seeking sheer adventure in the tropics, this is certainly a fun and exciting read. In fact, there has been a movie made from one of the stories set in New Zealand in Return to Paradise. As a special bonus, thriller author Steve Berry wrote a wonderful introduction which is a fascinating retrospective that is as insightful as Michener’s works themselves. And a heads up! When Steve Berry was in our store, not only did he kindly offer to sign all his books in our stock, he bought several books about Hawaii in preparation for his next novel! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

here will be at least two more Flavors of Kukuiula before the year is out, said Helaine Perel, manager of The Shops at Kukuiula. “The next one will be during the weekend of The Kauai Marathon,” Perel said. “And then, we’ll have one in November.” The Flavors of Kukuiula — Plantation Style unveiled a variety of cuisine served “street food” style, peppered with music from the John Rivera Trio and Friends, the Roundhouse Ramblers, David Parsons Duo, and Gypsy Spice. “I did my part,” said Mike Perel. “I got the venison sausage from Merriman’s, and the Roundhouse Ramblers? I heard them when they played at a friend’s birthday party.” Cece Villanueva was more interested in Gypsy Spice who welcomed the evening with some latin flair. “I like their music,” Villanueva said. “We come just to hear them play. Do they have a CD out? Of course, the food is always good, but I like the music.” The first strains of music usually start at 5:30 p.m. and carries until the night ends at 8:30 p.m. Info: www.theshopsatkukuiula.com.
