BENTONITE TANKING SYSTEMS FAQS

How does Bentonite work as a waterproofing medium

Bentonite has many and varied uses, in this case by confining and compacting the clay the mineral swells to form a watertight barrier.

What is the swell ratio of the sodium bentonite (the active waterproofing constituent) used in the system

Sodium Bentonite swells to 24 times its own dehydrated mass in clean water.

How many kilos of sodium bentonite per square meter of membrane

SwellSealMSÂŽ 5.50 kgs / m2. of granular bentonite.

What preparation of the subsoil is necessary

Although usually installed on a mud blinder, membrane can be installed on sand or ground compacted to a minimum of 85% modified Proctor.

Does the membrane need to be protected from the elements during construction

No. Membrane can withstand exposure without adverse effect for several weeks.

Does the membrane have to be sandwiched in a double blinder

No. Dry fill Bentonite does not require a topping blinder.

Will the sodium bentonite react effectively in salt water or contaminated water

Salt water and contaminated water conditions will effect the performance of Bentonite. Laboratory test results in the UAE show that in local conditions SwellSeal will effectively selfheal.

Will the sodium bentonite remain evenly distributed in vertical applications

Yes. Our membranes are random needlepunched to ensure that sodium bentonite does not creep thus creating weak areas.

Does the membrane need to be hydrated prior to the concrete pour

Yes. Pre hydration will activate the membrane prior to the pour to compensate for the local conditions and benefit concrete curing.

Does the system have an insured warranty

Yes. Systems have a 20 year warranty on materials and workmanship. The warranty can be extended to 50 years on material and application, subject to system and installation approval. In addition to the warranty we provide financial loss cover of $5,000,000

Application of Neoferma gasket The Neoferma gasket is suitable for sealing all types of joints. It is extremely flexible, consisting of hollow sections terminating in individual tips, that are easily compressed ensuring close contact with concrete, steel, glass or wood surfaces. Completely sealing of the joint. Neoferma gasket is easily compressed and maintains close contact with concrete, steel, glass or wood surfaces. This ensures complete sealing of the joint. Water and Weather resistance The gaskets have been tested successfully to a hydrostatic pressure of ten metres and in buildings more than 100m high with a wind velocity of 160km/hour developing a pressure of 130 kg/m2 and for buildings 160-320m high with a wind pressure of 180 kg/m2. Sound Insulation These gaskets exhibit excellent insulation against airborne sound. Thermal Insulation A single gasket will provide good thermal insulation but in cases where the standard required is very exacting our system of double gaskets (inside and outside of joint) is recommended. Materials The Neoferma gasket can be manufactured from EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) or neoprene or similar synthetic rubber to suit specific requirements such as exposure to hydrocarbons. Colours are available to meet design criteria (subject to minimum quantity). Approved for use in potable Water. These rubbers have been in use for nearly 50 years and have an unrivalled record of durability under all kinds of conditions, including a temperature range of -350C to +1800C. Life expectancy: 25 years for EPDM, and 50 years for silicon rubber.

NEOPANEL

An integral part of CIW’s system, engineered for waterproofing basements below the water table. Precast panels, are waterproofed during manufacture. Reducing the need for over excavation and sealed internally once installed. This returns higher yeild to the developer by allowing for the maximum use of the space.

Benefits of the system include: • Speed of Construction, reduces program. • Fewer trades on site e.g. form workers • Reduced construction costs overall. • Water proofing done off site, weather not an issue • Health and Safety - Confined Spaces Act. • Maximises the real estate & early tenancy • Ability to maximise basement area

REMEDIAL WORKS CIW’s technicians preferred injection and void filling products based on years of experience across many and varied challenging projects ranging from straight forward sealing of movement cracks to tunnel and post construction curtain grouting. PUR-X® is a range of one component urethane injection sealants designed to seal leaking cracks, joints and holes in concrete and soil stabilisation. PUR-X is injected, under pressure, from inside or outside the structure and with minimal disruption. When cured, the urethanes demonstrate a variety of properties dependant on the project requirements. Made in Australia and free of any VOCs ACRYL-X® is a Two component Acrylate polymers capable in the hands of our technical team of tackling a wide range of seemingly impossible challenges. Its ultra-low viscosity allows for penetration through leaking sewer pipe joints and into the surrounding soil. Its low surface tension also makes it effective for permeation applications such as: tunneling operations, curtain grouting, and support of excavation.

REMEDIAL WORKS Protecting your investment Spalling concrete puts owners of property at risk of negligence suits. Damage can occur through concrete pieces falling and injuring people or property. Further problems will occur unless dealt with in a timely manner. CIW can provide expert services for all types of remedial works including the Desalination of harmful and corrosive salts that lead to further repair costs as the problem spreads. Concrete spalling cannot be repaired by simply rendering over the affected area, this will not complete an effective long-term repair. To obtain expert advice on repairing and halting further concrete spalling problems and contact CIW Remedial.
