WHAT IS COCOON? Westox Cocoon poultice is one of its kind in the world! It was designed by Westox, who recognised the need for a product to remove salt from masonry of all types; concrete, brick or sandstone. It is a poultice that is capable of drawing salt out of masonry and halting deterioration. Cocoon is manufactured from pharmaceutical grade filter paper and features a very high internal surface area with high porosity and purity. • Cocoon is a water based poultice designed to remove soluble salts from masonry structures. • Cocoon is 100% environmentally friendly. • Cocoon is simple to apply. • Unlike other systems, Cocoon is a “Non – Destructive” Repair system and does not require ongoing monitoring and servicing cost.
WHY DO I NEED COCOON?
NEO COCOON L 2020v2
Salt can migrate into any open masonry capillary structure once air and moisture are present. Once the structure is contaminated with salt; • Corrosion forms on the reinforcing steel. • The concrete surface starts to delaminate. • The structural integrity is compromised.
HOW DOES COCOON WORK? SALT IMPREGNATION • Salt can migrate into any masonry open capillary structure once air, moisture and salt are present deep into the concrete and around the reinforced steel.
1ST COCOON APPLICATION • 1st Cocoon application after concrete surface grit blast preparation.
SALT EXTRACTION • The 1st Cocoon coating mixes with the salt and starts the extraction process by drawing the salt towards the surface. • The Cocoon coating starts to fill with salt. • The 1st coating is removed after 21 days. • A 2nd coat may be required. COMPLETED REPAIR • The coating of Cocoon is removed Attached ACES test analysis showing that Westox Cocoon successfully lowered the extremely high salt content by an average of 76%, returning the concrete after 21 days. back to a safe chloride level. • The concrete is returned to a safe The worldwide accepted safe % for salt content is 0.2% condition. Comments from Barrie Cooper Westox Australia Managing Director. “In view of the above if all areas of salt contamination in the concrete can be lowered to the same levels and the steel reinforcing returned to an alkaline environment free from oxygen and water, the concrete will be in a stable condition and further corrosion and deterioration should cease. There should be no reason for further treatments other than for aesthetic reasons”. Barrie Cooper.
CAN WE PROVE COCOON WORKS? All Cocoon projects are independently tested using ion chromatography testing at the following stages; 1. Prior to application of 1st cocoon coating 2. Prior to application of 2nd cocoon coating 3. After completion of 2nd cocoon coating Example:
ACES test analysis showing that Westox Cocoon successfully lowered the extremely high salt content by an average of 76%, returning the concrete back to a safe chloride level. The worldwide accepted safe % for salt content is 0.2%
COCOON @WORK Al Ain The Sheikh Mohamed Bin Khalifa House Project (SMBKH) is a cultural restoration project to preserve and rehabilitate a major building in the context of the UAE’s recent history, as it is a tangible evidence of the ‘Transition Period’, the crucial period between the pre-oil and post-oil eras. The SMBKH is also an important landmark as it was located at the gates of Al Ain city, and it was the first visible house for people accessing Al Ain from Abu Dhabi. Cocoon has been used on concrete structural elements in the restoration of structural beams, columns and stair cases.
St. Apollonia St. Apollonia was originally the monastery for St. Marks Basilica. Now being used as a museum for religious art works. (Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra). Cocoon was used to remove salts from the 60 cm thick walls over a two year period. An estimated 9 kg of salt was removed from each square metre of wall area over the two year period.
RE-ALKILISATION POULTICE Raises the pH level in treated concrete returning it to a neutral state. Re-alkalisation poultice is then applied on the bare concrete or on concrete with a porous render. Once the re-alkalisation poultice is applied it should be shielded to remain moist. This can be achieved by wrapping the treated area with plastic or foil. It is also recommended to keep the poultice out of direct sunlight by putting a screen around it.
