BACKGROUND AND REFERENCES
Prior to working at David Parker Architects, I completed my Part 1 education at Oxford Brookes University. Whilst here I undertook a fully paid holiday placement at Spratley Studios, Henley-on-Thames. I was involved predominantly on visual tasks, however, one achievement that I am particularly proud of was my design of the lobby at Du Cane Court in Balham. Along with an interior designer we jointly designed and project managed the refurbishment. I personally specified all of the fixtures, fittings and flooring used in the final scheme, designed the desk and commissioned a furniture-designer who built it. The desk can be seen in the foreground of the picture below. I spent 3 months at the medium sized firm working on a variety of commercial and residential projects taking a mainly contemporary form.

We enjoyed having Tom in Unit F [Brookes 09-10. Unit Leader: Amanda Marshall]. From the start, it was clear that here was a student who stood out in his sophistication and technical skills, and had an easy charismatic manner that reflected his comparatively broad spread of interests and life experience, and this was apparent in our many conversations, where he was always alert and challenging.
”
I have no hesitation in recommending him to work in any office, and I’m sure that, one day, he’ll be running one.

...one of the reasons we offered Tom a placement was the quality of his project work and graphic presentations. Since joining the practice Tom has worked both on the drawing board and on CAD using Microstation, Sketch up and Photoshop applications mainly, assisting me in the preparation of drawing packages for planning, predominantly on residential proposals, and occasionally helping out other senior members of staff in a support role. Tom has displayed good IT and CAD skills from the start.

THE STEADINGS
Brief 3 Replacement Houses I commenced this project by going to the site and surveying the 3 existing buildings (one very large house, 2 small bungalows). This allowed me to see what the planners were likely to accept in replacement after they were demolished. I was tasked with drafting up feasibility drawings straight into 3D to aid the Architect with the design of the contemporary homes, in addition this also kept the developer-client heavily involved and made it very easy for changes to be made pre-planning. Two of the three houses were contemporary and created entirely in 3D, and I created only the focal point of the building (bottom left) for the 3rd house (traditional manor house).

CHILTERN LODGE
Brief New house in backland of existing house. I was fortunate enough to be in a position where my parents commissioned DPA to design and build a new house with the intention of selling. This gave me a great viewpoint where I was more actively involved in every aspect of the project from feasibility to completion. Having a birds eye view of the site from my bedroom window everyday gave me an unparalleled experience on how a project is realised and constructed and the delays and drawbacks faced when on site. The design of the building was largely led by myself and the project Architect, after a guiding design by the Architect, I drew up the plans, sections, elevations and together with the D&A statement that I prepared, it was submitted for planning. CHILTERN YE OLDE HARROW LODGE HENLEY-ON-THAMES
Brief Two new houses Similarly to The Steadings, after seeing my 3D skills that I have brought to the practice, both the Architect and the client wanted to be able to see what the building would look like before an application was put in. My renders provided excellent feedback and it was decided that more light was required where the stairs started on the ground floor as it was completely shut off from natural light when doors were closed, the image below (bottom left) made this obvious. Additionally the kitchen plan had to be revised as the fridge and other white goods were too far from the main kitchen area. I liked completing this task as I spent longer thus getting better results.

CHILTERN LODGE SONNING MASTER PLANNING HENLEY-ON-THAMES
Brief 80 unit development in rural Oxfordshire With such a large development, planning will always be a tough area to design to and to gain the knowledge required. For this I was fortunate enough to be involved with planning consultant - Ken Dijksman (author of ÂThe Planning GameÊ). Through him and the project Architect I learned of the sensitivity of such a project from Archeological obstructions to newt removal down to basic locations of the units and provisions. I attended my 2nd large public consultation and had to deal face-to-face with angry neighbours and inquisitive passers-by. Overall this project gave me great experience on a large scale project, and I think overall a large scale project isnÊt necessarily more complex than a small one, thereÊs just more site to be designed, surveyed etc, and more neighbours who will be affected. Sympathetic design and multi-use area Could cause traffic issues in and already congested area CAD 2/3D graphics Hand drawing Planning Building Control Site

MILLGATE HOMES
Brief 15 new units with 40% affordable flats In such a prime location, the quality of 15 new units had to be large, grand and in keeping with the local area. The scheme achieved this, and I assisted with amendments to the CAD site plan and also creating these images of the site plan, elevations and street elevations. I created the 10 front elevations from CAD and even more compiling them into 3 street elevations (section A is below). I got to visit the site in order to take photos and take some measurements, I highly hope to be able to go back when the buildings start to be erected in the new year.

UPPER GERRARDS CROSS
Brief Four large new houses. With land being very valuable in Gerrards Cross, the site we were given was quite steep for a multi-unit residential development. I built the site up in 3D from spotlevels attained by the surveyor (image on the right), this enabled the Architect to assess the feasibility of the access road in a steep site and also gave the client a clear picture of what was being built. The images below are some of the internal shots of the houses.

THORNFIELD HENLEY-ON-THAMES
Brief Three New Houses on Brownfield site. After being approached to design and build 3 new houses near Henley-on-Thames, I was put in charge of the planning application. Nearing the end of my placement, my boss, David Parker, thought I was ready to take on this task. After designing all 3 houses from rough sketches. I did everything involved with the application, the D&A, application forms, photosheets, plans, sections and elevations. After this was submitted my boss informed me that it was an outstanding piece of work, I am confident that I can achieve even higher standards with more complex projects in the future.

BOVINGTON COTTAGE
20 Brief
New house in land of existing house. Similar to Thornfield, this was a typical Oxfordshire flint-and-brick style house. Many of the features from Thornfield were shared with this design, as it was commissioned very soon after the Thornfield application was submitted. I did the majority of the application with graphics, plans, sections and elevations, with the D&A and was about to be submitted when I finished my placement

BRADENHAM HILL FARM
Brief Estate building on existing site. The client wanted a new outbuilding to be his office and guesthouse. I went to the site and surveyed the existing building so that the GFA didnÊt exceed what was already there to comply with planning conditions. The existing barn as shown was reclad to improve itÊs appearance, and the other proposal was for a Âleisure barnÊ with pool and spa facilities.

NORTH LINKS ROAD
Brief Contemporary new build in tough site. The site itself wasnĂŠt challenging, it was the planning policies that had to be applied. The ridge level could not exceed any existing dwelling, and the building had to look like it didnĂŠt impose on the surrounding buildings. To illustrate this I created these photoshop montages and sketchup images rendered with V-Ray. I think they make the building sit very nicely within a traditional context.
