A Glimpse of Blue Standing on the shore and looking out at the sea and the sky has provided a subject that has fascinated me all my life. It offers a simple composition but one that contains a limitless variety of possibilities. The light and colour will change endlessly as it is affected by the weather, time of day and the season. Tides will come and go with waves that vary in height and strength. All is in perpetual movement. It is within those three constant bands of sea, sky and land that I can express my responses and reactions as a painter. In a wholehearted process of making marks, gestures, textures, erasures, of mixing colours and mediums that are swiftly applied to canvas, I am seeking to discover something that conveys my sensations and responses to this vast subject. Rivers provide me with another romantic subject, especially during the autumn months. Colours of gold and bronze are set alongside soft, grey tones. The river is noisy and fast moving, contrasting against the relative stillness of the trees with their gently falling leaves. The majority of my paintings have been made in front of the subject. Others, painted in the studio, have drawn on a range of different sources, such as sketchbooks, small oil studies, videos, poems and memories.Throughout all of my work there is a desire to find ways to fully express my concerns and my depth of feeling.
