It is interesting that this solo show is so close to home for Gordon Bryce. With his roots in the Scottish Landscape, and celebrating his 70th birthday, Gordon Bryce has clearly been on a reflective journey, marking his huge career to this point. These works are personal, intimate, and of places that Gordon has known all his life. And yet we are seeing them in a new light. He has been creating this reflective group of paintings over the last two years, covering the cycle of the seasons. As you can see, Gordon has been living with ‘snow’ for a considerable amount of that time and with some breathtaking results. Snow is an almost impossible thing to paint well, and yet Gordon achieves it beautifully. At the heart of every painting, though, is colour. Even with his snow. ‘January’ and ‘The Dee, Maryculter, Winter’ are wonderful examples. And what better example of a true Colourist than ‘Cliff, Ardnarmurchan’, almost Mediterrean in colour and in warmth, another thing that Gordon captures so sublimely. A Scottish Colourist through and through, and in this year, his 70th year, Gordon Bryce has undeniably established his position in this genre.
