Wild Spaces This year after lock down ended I needed to get back to my source of strength, away from the closed-in space of house and studio, I revisited Poltesco on the Lizard Peninsular which had been the inspiration, catalyst for paintings some twenty years ago. During these years I had worked on a series of plein-air paintings of the cove which were worked up into bigger studio paintings. Once again, as if no time had passed, I found myself sitting on the same hard pebbles of all those years before, alone with the endless space of sea, sky, air, rocks and cliff occasionally visited by wild ponies for company making their way down onto the beach or peering over the cliff. The landscape filled me with new hope for existence, it washed over me, my senses heightened by my new sense of freedom, nature had not complied with the rules and was just as vital and unpredictable as it ever was. I worked quickly and urgently, with palette knife and brushes. A balancing act on the serpentine pebbles with the wind flicking paint around the air. With a new impetus and passion, my creative batteries fully charged, I went back into the studio and embarked on a new series of paintings inspired by the elemental forces of nature, untamed landscape of weather, shifting clouds, seafoam and tidal flux. Counteracting the rugged edge of the Cornish coastline, the inland verdant hedgerows bounding the fields and lanes are another source of inspiration. Having fractured my pelvis in a riding accident the previous summer and unable to sit in the landscape or carry paints, I found myself pushing a wheelbarrow, come walking frame, around my fields, picking wildflowers from the native rambling hedgerows while my inquisitive equine friends were grazing. Carted into my studio at different times over the spring, summer and autumn months; foxgloves, campion, cow-parsley, meadowsweet, honeysuckle, thistle, briar rose, hemp, montbretia‌overflowed on my painting table and onto canvas. This practise of bringing the landscape into the studio has continued resulting in these latest hedgerow paintings, they also act as a counter point to the quiet studio still-lives of flowers and studio objects, which are more singular and reflective.
