watermark “Painting is like a conversation with myself, like a brush mark, swipe or scrape of the palette knife, relating to the next mark or perhaps akin to a composer finding each note, part of a harmony, or a sequence of notes and to the whole symphony of colour and sound. Sitting alone by the waters edge for hours at a time, shading myself from the heat of the sun, the circle of my paints and boards creating a nest around me. The sensations of sound, light and stillness fill my head, eyes and body, absorbing all whilst making marks in paint. The oil paint is applied in layers wet onto dry and wet into wet. A stretch of creek, an expanse of sky, an infinity of space, another aspect, thought or reflection in time revealed on an eight inch panel. The thrill of painting live allows for nature’s moods to play out, everything in a state of flux. Clouds change and hover over water, reflections emerge and fade, incoming and receding tides create sandbanks which appear out of the water in vivid pastel warm tones later to be submerged and disappear. Light creates marks on the water surface, colour reflected in painterly strokes, flecks and stabs of paint. The blue of the sky at one moment deep cobalt and changing to another blue, turquoise hue. Like a battle taking place on the surface, freefalling for a while off the cliff edge, at a point it feels like all the marks are hanging in the air just waiting to fall into place and gradually get distilled into an image. Where it ends up is not something over which I have complete control, but at some stage the painting is rescued.
