Elizabeth David’s Mediterranean Dream mixed media on panel - 76 x 76cm
I started painting for this exhibition in a low mood. In fact at the beginning I struggled to paint at all, and what I did paint was not good enough...........so lots of work was destroyed. As time went on I began to feel once again that it is all just a journey. And they say the journey is more important than the destination. With that in mind I slowly started to relax and become engrossed in all the painterly puzzles....... I spent some time in France while making this group of work. We stayed in the village of Tremolat where I have been a lot over the years. I love going to French markets and painting the food, then cooking it. So I would say that is the starting point for this ‘journey into summer’. There is always an autobiographical core in each painting. They don’t come alive for me until some sort of secret code is cracked and I think- ah! I know what this painting is about. Howard Hodgkin talked a lot about each of his paintings being a very specific emotional memory. I couldn’t put it better.
