Seasons of Light I have had the immense pleasure and privilege of knowing Ethel Walker, and her incredible paintings, for over 25 years. I have actually admired Ethel Walker‘s work long before I had the opportunity to work with her. I remember seeing her work, in so many different places, art fairs, people’s homes, and I even attended one of her private views at Thackeray Gallery in the mid 90’s before I worked there. I remember it like it was yesterday. Her work was extraordinary then, and is extraordinary still. A room full of Ethel Walker’s is like having stepped out into the one of the most powerful landscapes ever. Huge skies, slithers of water beneath, and always light breaking. Storms brewing, rain in the distance, sun breaking through, all captured by Ethel in a breathtaking moment. Best experienced in a half light, you almost don’t need to have artificial light on her paintings at all, they are so moving and masterful in their own right, subtle and yet majestic. Scotland, in particular the West Coast, is where Ethel continues to live, work, be inspired by and mainly paint. This new collection, marking Ethel’s 80th birthday year, pays homage to the land it’s beauty, expanse, drama and light. Sarah Macdonald-Brown, 2021
