RISE & FALL With the launch of ‘To All At Sea’ on Anglesey this year, in the 160 anniversary of The Royal Charter Storm, my creative attention has inevitably been forged by the impact of the weather on our daily lives and also the potential impact of it on our future generations. Unwittingly, this collection of work has evolved to become about the ‘Rise and Fall’ of water. This includes investigation of the ground left behind following a tidal retreat and the lowering of a water course during seasonal change. It occurs to me that water breathes, just as we do. There is also a focus on the exaggeration of horizons. The horizon offers not only a visual resting point, but also the evolution of new weather, and an anticipation of change. In painting ’The Calm’ side of the To All At Sea Installation, in some respects it became more foreboding than ‘The Storm’. However calm the waters were, there was the likelihood of fresh weather advancing from the horizon. For now, though, the light hits the sea and rests there, in waiting. And it is beautiful. BIOGRAPHY Anthony’s painting practice is concerned with the weather; its impact on the landscape and himself, his research often finds him in heavy weather conditions in remote locations. Inspiration continually comes from the landscape, its history and the ever-changing climate. Over the years, Anthony has been invited to paint at the Queen’s Diamond Jubliee Pagaent, created numerous outdoor installations on Tresco Island, Anglesey and in Snowdonia. All of these projects have garnered National press with coverage shown on ITV News and BBC’s Countryfile, and Coast amongst others. Many National papers have also given column inches to each, they include:The Times, Independent, Telegraph and Financial Times, to name but a few. Critical acclaim has also come with the ‘High and Low’ installation winning the Arts and Business award in Wales in 2016. More recently, Anthony has been invited to establish an artistic residency in the South African Wilderness, subsequently forming a collaboration with renowned photographer, Barry Cawston. In September 2019, Anthony launches a new art concept called, ‘Art For Good‘. Which is a mass painting movement inspired by the idea that the practice of painting is an objective way in which to connect with the landscape and promotes the idea of ‘art for all’. The first of these events, in collaboration with the Newlyn School of Art will see over a thousand painters standing shoulder to shoulder and linking Lands End to Sennen in Cornwall. It will feature on BBC National News. His most recent installation, ‘To All At Sea’ on Anglesey Island was the most ambitious to date; a giant painting rotating with each change in wind direction, and composing a piece of music as it does so, was listed in The Guardian Top Ten Outdoor Art events, 2019, and featured on BBC television. Anthony is a tutor at the Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall, and is a member of the Wilderness Art Collective and Fellow of the RSA. His work is held in both corporate and private collections worldwide. Anthony has been exhibiting at Thackeray Gallery since 2010.
