COLOURS IN A WICKER BASKET by Jennifer Holland
1 Here is an old grey house in Wales Whose flowery surroundings and growing green things Clamour to be brought inside Tenderly ordered in pots or, once inside, Be grouped in painted jugs, And glass vases and burnished copper containers. All trembling with life, entreating permanence, They beckon to be joyously coloured By the dusty stacks of jumbled pastels, Boxed up in their wicker basket. Follow perhaps, the china dogs, The birds eggs, the chairs and the books: The books, and the garden, so essential to the spirit That invite their owner’s new- found immersion in the Eden garden awaiting…

II Choose your book from the old epics of romance and adventure That absorbed a youth-times hunger for experiences to come, And the homely beguiling of tales, Never quite grown out of and coloured in With the first -discovered joy of chalked improvements.
III Take your book into the garden, Past the just–glimpsed kitchen, Leave the waiting desk at the end of the passage With its promise of unfinished business, But pause a moment, for the respite of a worn armchair to savour the tantalizing engrossing books, And the pleasure to come of the garden, Suggested by the sun-filled windows With their awaiting discoveries of new life.

BIOGRAPHY Claerwen Holland was born in Radnorshire, Wales. She studied at Byam Shaw School of Art, under the direction of Maurice de Sausmarez, who awarded her the Principal’s prize for landscapes in oils. She completed the National Diploma for Fine Arts and won The David Murray studentship in landscape painting, awarded by the Royal Academy, London. Claerwen continues to live and work in both London and Wales. She is primarily a painter of domestic still lifes and landscapes; the kitchen gardens of Wales or sandy beaches of the British coast. She is inspired by the objects which surround her at home in Wales; freshly picked flowers from her garden, china ornaments, old toys and secret boxes. Claerwen has also found inspiration in and around Aberystwyth, capturing the comings and goings of people and everyday life, in a touching and beautifully observed way. Claerwen has exhibited in many mixed shows, including the Royal Academy Exhibition and the New English Arts Club, and has had solo exhibitions in England and Wales. Claerwen Holland has been exhibiting with Thackeray Gallery since 1996, making this her 25th Year with us.
