Off the Beaten Track As en plein air painter, I am inspired by the Scottish landscape, the Western Seaboard, its fishing boats and the Hebridean Skies. The land and the sea are everything. Venturing into the countryside, camping in all weathers, I seek to capture the everchanging Scottish Landscape in my notes, sketches and paintings. Painting outside on a blank canvas is challenging but always very rewarding. My painting palette primarily consists of Kings Blue Light, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine and Turquoise for the sky with the seas being a chaotic mix of ochres and earth colours. I tend to paint using large brushes to quickly capture the colours and essence of the moment before adding finer detail. I would say my painting style is painterly, spontaneous and instinctive. I rarely work from photographs. The sense of place, smell of the sea, colours of the sun and the sound of the wind cannot be captured in a photograph. I always prefer to experience what I paint. Throughout my travels I have always painted boats especially the older wooden clinkerbuilt fishing boats. I am fascinated with their history as well as their shapes, designs and bright colours. My paintings seek to look beyond the painted surfaces and to capture a small portion of their spirit. My boat paintings have been described as loose, and semi-abstract whereas the landscapes and seascapes are contemporary and representational.

BIOGRAPHY Born in 1957, David Smith is a Scottish Contemporary en plein air artist. The palette and inspiration for his work comes from his love of the Scottish outdoors. He has travelled extensively hillwalking and mountain climbing across the world, but he always returns to paint in Scotland. David’s oil and watercolour paintings primarily feature the seaboard and landscape of Scotland. Painting and sketching en plein air allows him to immediately capture the colour and harmony of the subject in front of him. This can then be translated onto a finished work in the studio. David was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 2011. Although predominantly a self taught artist, David has studied at various colleges including the Glasgow Print Studio, Glasgow School of Art and Latrobe University, Melbourne, Australia.
