LAND & SEA NEW SCOTTISH PAINTINGS
My subject matter is nature. Whether it is a contemporary landscape, seascape painting, a boat or a still life, I choose to work with traditional methods of oil and watercolour paints.
I use my sketchbooks as a visual diary. Filling them with mainly charcoal or pastel drawings or whatever medium comes to hand getting down as many ideas, colours and detail as possible.
I always find working outdoors lets me focus on capturing the subject in front of me immediately.

BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1957, David Smith is a Scottish Contemporary en plein air artist. The palette and inspiration for his work comes from his love of the Scottish outdoors. He has travelled extensively hillwalking and mountain climbing across the world, but he always returns to paint in Scotland.
David’s oil and watercolour paintings primarily feature the seaboard and landscape of Scotland. Painting and sketching en plein air allows him to immediately capture the colour and harmony of the subject in front of him. This can then be translated onto a finished work in the studio.
David was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 2011. Although predominantly a self taught artist, David has studied at various colleges including the Glasgow Print Studio, Glasgow School of Art and Latrobe University, Melbourne, Australia.
