MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR OF ITALY TO THE KINGDOM OF THAILAND Held under the title “Diplomacy in support to the Growth of the Country”, the IX Conference of the Ambassadors of Italy, convened in Rome on 20-21st December 2012, clearly underlined the primary task that the country trusts to its Diplomacy. The President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, and the Prime Minister, Mario Monti, both sanctioned the same concept in their speeches, commending the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its efforts and commitment towards Italy’s economic growth. This is indeed the approach that has been followed by the Embassy in Bangkok in the recent years. Monitoring and analyzing the situation of the Thai economy, supporting both Italian and Thai entrepreneurs, promoting the image of Italy have been at the core of our action. The annual Italian Festival in Thailand has played a major role in this effort, with the objective of casting a holistic and updated image of the country. Alongside the many cultural sectors in which we enjoy a long-established fame, we have specially focused on presenting R&D, science and technology as fields in which Italy and its industrial production have attained world-leading achievements.
H.E. Michelangelo Pipan Ambassador of Italy to the Kingdom of Thailand
Last year has been a particularly promising one for bilateral relations, putting on record the highest level of trade and witnessing official events of seminal importance. After the “Asean Awareness Forum” - a highly successful meeting organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the end of March in Rome, when high ranking representatives of the Asean countries had the occasion to illustrate the opportunities offered by their economies to the Italian business community - the two Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Giulio Terzi and Surapong Tovichakchaikul, met last April at the margins of the ASEAN- EU Summit in Brunei. In November the Asia-Europe Summit (ASEM9) in Vientiane gave the occasion for official talks between Prime Ministers Yingluck Shinawatra and Mario Monti and their delegations. As a converging assessment of the two economies’ inherent complementarities emerged, the opinion was shared that many very important opportunities are there to be seized for both sides and that we need to establish a common roadmap to this end. As a follow up in 2013 we expect a significant strengthening of bilateral relations through several events and initiatives, including direct meetings between business associations and businessmen, also in view of developing projects together in neighboring markets. We consequently look to the New Year confident that Italy and Thailand will give an effective push forward to their bilateral relations, in the conducive framework offered by the EU and ASEAN. Both a rebalanced macroeconomic context on the Italian side and a steady economic growth on the Thai one bode well. The two business communities are called upon to profit from this general positive situation, an opportunity that we intend to foster together with entrepreneurs and their associations, such as the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce. I am confident that 2013 will be an excellent year, not only for bilateral trade, but for moving some significant steps forward in the integration of our respective economies. Best Wishes to All!
Michelangelo Pipan Ambassador of Italy to the Kingdom of Thailand

MESSAGE
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE THAI-ITALIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Dear Members, On behalf of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC), I am glad to introduce to you the 2013 TICC Business Directory. The Directory highlights the activities of over 160 members. Mr. Lino Geretto TICC President
I would like to extend a warm welcome to new members and thank renewing members for their continued support. Over the years, TICC has become a noteworthy business network. Let me assure you that the TICC directors and staff will continue to do their best to serve the local Thai-Italian business community as well as anyone involved in commerce between Thailand and Italy. Business opportunities will continue to be created in Thailand, despite stagnating economies in Europe and North America, as Far East economies continue to grow. When the ASEAN free trade agreement will be fully implemented, around 2015, businesses in Thailand will further benefit from its good infrastructure and its location in the middle of South East Asia. This past year TICC broadened its presence in Thailand as a new TICC chapter operated for a full year in Phuket. In 2013, TICC will pursue added expansion in areas outside Bangkok, e.g., Pattaya, where Italian-related businesses are increasing in number and volume. The chapters will work closely with TICC Bangkok office to ensure that all members will fully benefit from the TICC information resources, events and projects. Among the projects, I would like to mention the “Ospitalità Italiana” project, aimed at promoting Italian restaurants by certifying the authenticity of their food ingredients and preparation methods. In 2011, fourteen Italian restaurants, located in Bangkok, Hua Hin and Phuket achieved Ospitalità Italiana awards. In 2012, an additional fourteen restaurants applied for Ospitalità Italiana certification and the results will be announced in early 2013. In a related information initiative, TICC has created the first free database of Certified Italian Food Products available in Thailand. Restaurants and food products importers/ distributors are expected to support it – to their advantage - by entering data on additional certified Italian food products when these become available in the Thai market. It is also important to mention the European-funded project SCRIPT, developed by TICC in cooperation with other organizations active in Thailand. SCRIPT helped five Thai silk companies achieve the Organic GOTS certification and showcase their products at the Pitti Filati Fair 2013 in Florence (Italy), accompanied by a TICC delegation. The main TICC objective is to facilitate networking and business development. To reach this objective, TICC will keep cooperating with other Italian Institutions in Thailand and the recently-created EU-ASEAN Business Centre (EABC). I believe it is also appropriate for TICC to help other non-profit organizations that carry out beneficial social work in Thailand. In the past years, TICC helped the St. Camillus Foundation implement three “Bridge of Hope” Gala Dinners to raise funds for local children with severe handicaps and/or AIDS /HIV. A positive response and a large number of participants were obtained from TICC member companies. TICC is constantly working to improve the range and qulity of services available to a growing network of Italian and Thai companies. 2012 brought good results, but more can be done. This is a goal that, I am sure, TICC can achieve with the support of our members and friends. In closing, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to H.E. Michelangelo Pipan, Italy’s ambassador to Thailand, and his staff for their kind support and advise to the Chamber.

Economy-Overview
Thailand has grown considerably in the past years with a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth equal to 4% in 2012, confirming itself as a strong and leading economy in South East Asia despite the global economic slowdown. The trend for the future seems to be extremely promising; according to the International Monetary Fund in fact, the Thai GDP in 2013 will be the highest among the ASEAN countries and the unemployment level will be lowest in Asia. The increase of private consumptions and the floods-related investments together with the actions taken by the Shinawatra government to stimulate the economy, represent the main growth factors during 2012. Imports, exports and foreign direct investments have grown considerably during 2012 with manufacturing FDI registering an increase of 66% only in the first semester of the year. Exports have grown at a lower rate compared to imports mainly because of the reduction of demand from Europe, China and Asean members; however forecast for 2013 shows an increase in exports equal to 5%. Private consumptions will growth less than in 2012 mainly because of the end of many of the economic measures adopted during 2012 (“First Car Program in particular). Great attention will be paid during 2013 to the effects of the new policies taken in order to improve the wealth distribution within the country; minimum wage (now equal to 300 baht with an increase of 79 Baht compared to the previous amount) and rice pledging in particular. Exports of rice, for instance, have fallen dramatically during 2012 and Thailand has lost its primacy as largest exporter of rice after the decision of the government of purchasing rice from producers at a price higher than the market one. The actions of the government concerning rice are still a matter of debate over the country. Despite this, Thailand remains a robust country, representing the second largest economy in South East Asia after Indonesia. During the year most economic sectors have reached their pre-floods levels with manufacturing being the leading industry in the country. The automotive and the Food & Beverage sectors have registered extremely high growth and the trend for the future seems promising.

Construction and Building Industries
The construction industry is definitely growing within the country. Given the traffic problems that Bangkok is facing, huge investments have been approved with new BTS and MRT lines on construction. The government is planning to borrow up to 50$bn for several transportation projects that will make life for commuters and residents in Bangkok easier. The government is also working on 14 large-scale projects along the Chao Phraya and other six rivers as part of the flood-prevention plan. A high-speed railway network is now on construction all around the country and its realization is scheduled to end in 2018 with the opening of four new railway lines: the Bangkok-Hua Hin, Bangkok-NakhonRatchasima, Bangkok-Pattaya and Bangkok-Pitsanulok (Chiang Mai) lines. Among other investments, remarkable is the expansion plan that Phuket airport is undergoing: a 5.7-billion-baht project that will increase the capacity of the airport that is nowadays struggling with a fast growing number of passenger and new intercontinental flights; given the extremely good load factors registered on its flights from Dubai, Emirates Airlines, for instance, has already announced its willingness to increase capacity on the route with a second daily flight to the island with more passengers expected to land over the next months.
Automotive
The Automotive market is without doubts one of the most promising sectors in Thailand with a considerable growth registered during 2012. Demand for cars remains extremely high with sales in 2012 stimulated by the first car scheme that gave buyers discounts on their first car purchase. Toyota is the leader in the market and given the positive forecasts for the future, the company is investing 400 million US$ on a new plant at Chachoengsa that is going to be operative by the third quarter of 2013 with a capacity of 300.000 cars a year. Toyota however is not the only company focusing on Thailand with Ford, for instance, that opened its new 450 million US$ factory in May 2012 offering a productive capacity of 150,000 cars a year and creating over 2200 new jobs. If we consider the subsector of the two wheels, not only Japanese famous brands have opened plants in the country but also European companies such as Ducati and Triumph have invested heavily in the Thai market during the past years; given the ongoing traffic problems Bangkok is struggling with, the market for scooters and motorcycle in Thailand can offer noteworthy opportunities.
Food
The Food and Beverage industry is without doubts one of the most promising and rapidly growing sectors in Thailand. Competition is increasing consistently with new hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores opening every year. Forecasts for the next years are extremely positive with the consumption of food that is expected to increase 36%, reaching 50.86 billion US$ in 2015 and with an increasing number of consumers able to afford higher priced goods. Being one of the top expatriate destinations worldwide, with a tourism sector growing at a fast pace, more conscious consumers and rising disposable incomes, Thailand offers huge opportunities for international companies operating in the Food & Beverage sector. In 2012, almost 30% of the food and beverage products were imported and future trends can’t be but positive. As for products exported from Thailand around the world fishery products, livestock products, fruit, vegetables and sugar have grown rapidly over the next years. Exports of rice are instead decreasing due to the rice pledging scheme. Usa, Japan and China are the three top importers of food products from Thailand. Food Safety and Food Standards are increasing within the country and thanks to the efforts of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), trust in Thai food products is growing with positive results expected in the near future for Thai companies.

Wine
In the last years Thailand has seen a huge development of the wine market, Thai consumers are becoming increasingly familiar with wine and wine’s players have showed a real interest in this new market, not only with imports of wine but also with direct investments in the country. The climate of the region makes the harvesting of grapes possible twice a year, the summer harvest in July-August and the winter harvest in February-March with many opportunities for wine producers. The consumption of wine is in fact becoming more and more popular and sales are growing at a fast rate despite wine still represents only 3% of the total volume of alcoholic beverages purchased in the country. However with a rapidly growing and richer middle class, the interest in wine is increasing consistently and forecasts for the future seem extremely promising. Wine is perceived as an extremely healthy beverage and drinking wine is becoming trendy among young Thais with wine bars getting fashionable and well liked above all in Bangkok. The sale of wine is not anymore limited to exclusive hotels and restaurants but it is now possible to purchase wine in hypermarkets and supermarkets. Red wine is definitely the preferred one representing over 70% of the market. 120.000 hectoliters of wine were imported in Thailand during 2011 equal to 44, 3 millions US$. Being one of the biggest wine producers, Italy is holding the first position in the ranking that classifies the biggest exporters of wine in terms of quantity; Italy is followed by Australia and South Africa. The number of hectoliters exported from Italy to Thailand during 2011 reached the value of 28,116.9 with a growth registered during the first nine months of 2012 equals to 1.67%. Concerning imports in terms of value, France is the first country in the ranking. Italy is holding position number three after Australia, with 3.3 million US$ in 2011; 2012 hasn’t highlighted any considerable change. The different position of Italy in the two rankings suggests that the quality of Italian wine in Thailand is pretty variable despite we can still find a good variety of high quality wines in the country.
Tourism
Thailand is one of the premier tourist destinations in the world with a growing number of tourists visiting the country every year despite the global economic slowdown. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism will grow constantly over the next years with a forecast contribution of GDP equal to 6.4% by 2022. During 2012, 22,303,065 tourists visited Thailand with a growth of 15% from 2011. Considerable was the increase of tourists from China and ASEAN countries, offsetting the decline of European tourists.
Medical Sector
Thailand is rapidly becoming a global hub for the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. The Asiatic country has been one of the first countries to recognize the potential of medical tourism and the number of foreigners travelling to Thailand for medical purposes it’s increasing at a rapid pace. Bumrungrad Hospital, Bangkok Hospital and Samitivej Hospital are among the biggest and most famous hospitals in Thailand known worldwide for their high standards and cutting-edge facilities; as a matter of fact Bumrungrad Hospital, taken as example, has representative offices all around Asia but also in Australia and New Zealand providing its services to an increasing number of foreign patients. Medial tourism accordingly is becoming extremely lucrative for Thailand and the western accreditation of many hospitals is attracting a growing number of foreigners looking for high quality and low prices. Medical tourism in the Kingdom is growing at a rate equal to 16% every year and according to the latest forecasts its impact on the Thai economy will exceed 100 billion baht by 2015.

Education
Economic growth is leading to huge investments on the health and the education sectors within the country. Thailand is still reporting a shortage of skilled labor with negative consequences in terms of development and internationalization of many Thai firms. Considerable investments have been made during 2012 in order to improve the education level and increase the school participation especially in rural areas. The reduction of the gap between Bangkok and the rest of the country in terms of quality of education remains a primary objective.
Fairs
In 2012 Thailand has consolidated its role as central hub for fairs with a growing number of international visitors, thanks also to the efforts of the Department of Export Promotion. The main sectors covered by the large number of annual fairs are: Automotive, Gems & Jewelry, Industrial Equipment and Food & Beverage. Most fairs are held in Bangkok with the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) and the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center as the locations of most fairs. Economy-Overview
Italy’s economy has been characterized since its unification by a dichotomy between North and South; the first has been dominated by private companies, in most of the cases small or medium size businesses; the second instead, less industrialized, has always been based mainly on agriculture. During the past years Italy has suffered a contraction of its economy caused by the international economic crisis and nowadays the country is still struggling against the global slowdown. The level of unemployment has increased in the past years reaching the alarming value of 11%; public debt has grown as well being equal to 126% of GDP in 2012. Exports remain a fundamental factor of support to the Italian economy; beside that, tourism is an important strength of the country. However with a low fertility rate, high unemployment above all among young people, low productivity and reduced foreign direct investments, Italy will need great efforts from its political and economic leading class in order to invert this negative trend and re launch the economy.
Fashion
The entire world knows the Italian Style and the fashion industry is without doubts one of the biggest prides for Italy representing one of the most successful and healthy sector in the country. Beyond the historical brands such as Armani, Dolce&Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, Prada, Versace and Gucci, the sector lives trough small and medium-sized handicraft enterprises with the Italian style and creativity offering every year new brands in the fashion market. Obviously also the fashion industry has been hit by the global economic slowdown despite high demand for luxury goods from fast growing economies, in particular Russia, China, Brazil and United Arab Emirates has reduced the negative effects of the crisis especially for the high-end of the market. However optimism is slowly spreading and forecasts for the future seem positive with recovery expected for the second half of the year as stated by the global management consulting firm Bain&Co.
Food industry
The food industry has without doubts an extremely important role for the Italian economy with the agri-food sector representing over 16% of the Italian GDP. Italy is also the country with the highest number of products certified with the DOP and IGP marks; Gorgonzola, Aceto Balsamico di Modena, Prosciutto di Parma, Parmigiano Reggiano and Speck dell’Alto Adige are the most famous Italian accredited products.

In Italy the sector is characterized by small companies with an average of seven workers; over all the country counts 55000 companies operating in the food sector with almost 400000 employees. Italy is the first exporter of pasta, the second biggest exporter of wine and the third in the trade of chocolate and thanks to the huge volumes of food exported the sector has registered positive results and has been hit mildly by the economic crisis. Trades towards Russia, China, South America and India are growing at a fast pace and given the raise of the middle class within these countries, opportunities for Italy are definitely increasing. The sector is also characterized by a high level of research and development with a higher number of companies adopting technologically advanced production systems with technologies and equipments with high productivity and performances; moreover internationalization is becoming a must for most companies given how loved the Italian Food is around the world. 68% of exports are directed towards Europe; outside the continent, the United States represents the most important market for Italy while Russia and China are increasing rapidly their importance with promising forecasts for the future. Concerning trades towards Thailand, while the export of rice, flour, animals products and vegetables has been pretty stable over the past years, the imports of desserts, chocolate, coffee, tea and spicy from Italy has registered an extremely high growth (imports of coffee, tea and spicy increased from 1.4 million US$ in 2008 to 19.10 million US$ in 2011 while the import of chocolate and desserts reached over 11.4 million US$ in 2012 from approximately 0.9 million US$ in 2009). Animal products still constitute the biggest part of food products imported from Italy with sales that reached over 63.3 million US$ in 2012. Cold cuts in particular are getting more and more appreciated Thailand with Parma Ham that is already well-known within the country.

Automotive
With the fashion industry and the food Industry, the automotive industry is another noteworthy sector in the country. The industry has always been dominated by FIAT, the Torino-based largest automotive group of the nation and the 11th biggest automobile producer in the world, with over 200000 employees around the globe. The Group today counts important brands such as Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati. In 2009 the company broadened its products portfolio with the takeover of the American Group Chrysler, clear sign of the growing attitude of the group. The past years have also showed an increment in the internationalization of the production, with FIAT being an important player in the automotive industry in many countries. The most important and biggest production plants outside Italy are located in Serbia, South American, Argentina, Brazil and Poland with operations set up also in India and Turkey for instance.

Machinery
The machinery industry is one of the major strength of the Italian economy. The high level of sales beyond the national borders makes Italy one of the top exporters in Europe, following Germany that is holding the first position. Among the most exported products, plastic machines, farm machinery, textile machines, building machines and metalworking machines are the most noteworthy. Machineries also represent the biggest part of exports from Italy to Thailand with extremely high growth registered in the past years and with forecasts for the future expected to be positive. As a matter of fact, the exports of general purpose machineries. for instance. have grown from 120.000.000 Euro in 2009 to 140.000.000 Euro in 2011 while the exports of special purse machineries equal to 96.000.000 Euro in 2009 increased to 143.000.000 in 2011.
Biotechnology Industry
The biotechnology industry is becoming an interesting and promising sector for the Italian economy that has registered in the past years rapid growth and innovation. An increase number of biotech companies are setting up within the country with growing investments in research and development. Because of the efforts made so far, Italy, with 394 companies, is holding position number three in the ranking listing the countries with the highest number of biotech firms after Germany and the UK highlighting that biotechnology can offer huge opportunities and positive trends. Biotech firms within the country are usually pretty small characterized by less than 50 employees. The biotechnology industry in the country is generating over 7 billion Euros with a total number of employees equal to 52,400 and with over 200 companies operating in the health-care field. The fast growth of this sector and the increasing interest in biotechnology is demonstrated also by the large number of visitors of the Biotech Italy, one of the leading events dedicated to the medical and biotechnology industry that this year will be held at Fiera Milano in September from the 24th to the 26th of the month. Competent and high-skilled scientists and technicians together with considerable investment in the industry make the biotech sector in Italy a promising area that is making the country competitive in the worldwide scenario.
