MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE KINGDOM OF THAILAND
I
extend my warmest congratulations to the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC) on the publication of its 2011 Business Directory, which is a valuable resource for businesses from Italy and Thailand in advancing trade and investment.
Abhisit Vejjajiva Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand
Thailand and Italy have enjoyed close and cordial bilateral relations for many centuries. Today, the two countries are important partners in trade and investment, and both are each other’s popular destinations for tourism. I am confident that the TICC’s role in fostering closer ties between the business communities of the two countries will expand, thus elevating our relations to an even higher plane. May the members, Board of Directors and staff of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce find happiness, health and success in 2011 and beyond.

MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR OF ITALY TO THE KINGDOM OF THAILAND
I
t is my great pleasure to address the members of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce on the occasion of the new edition of the Business Directory.
In consideration of last year’s impressive performance, South East Asia has emerged as a primary powerhouse for the world economic recovery. ASEAN, as an ever more integrated market, offers unique opportunities that, in our era of globalization and international challenges, should not be left untapped. Michelangelo Pipan Ambassdor of Italy to the Kingdom of Thailand
In this framework, it is imperative that “Sistema Italia” work in a smooth and effective fashion aimed at promoting the brand “Italia”. Over the last years the Italian Festival in Bangkok has offered a multifaceted program, focusing on the promotion of the broadest array of Italian excellence, ranging from the traditional and much beloved “Italian way of life” to the most advanced and state-of-the-art scientific know-how. This is a winning model which requires an effective armonisation of the endeavours of all the institutions and agencies which are called to a joint cooperation. In this perspective the Embassy has to guarantee that the individual efforts are properly coordinated and all financial resources efficiently allocated. In a few weeks a new Board of Directors of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce will take over and will begin its work for a term in which many challenges have to be faced. While I extend my greetings to the incumbent board, I am looking forward to working with the new BoD for the accomplishment of our common objectives. INTRODUCTION TO THE THAI-ITALIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
T
he Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC), founded in 1979, is an independent, private, non-profit association of Italian and Thai businesspeople and professionals, registered in accordance with all applicable regulations in Thailand, and fully recognized by the Italian Ministry of Productive Activities (formerly the Ministry of Foreign Trade). TICC’s main objective is to bolster the already strong relationships between people of the Thai-Italian business community. Through an extensive membership network, TICC provides you with valuable business contacts and serve as a link to business opportunities worldwide through Assocamerestero – the Association of Italian Foreign Chambers of Commerce. TICC’s members include Italian businesses (those run by both Italians and Thais) as well as Thai professionals, entrepreneurial associations and other institutions. But TICC is not just a representative of the local business community; it is a nexus point between people involved in business, both in Italy and in Thailand. It is a space for sharing ideas and forming relationships. TICC’s principal goal is working to meet the needs of our members, which we accomplish by working in several specialized areas: • Showcasing investment opportunities for Italian businesses in Thailand— and for Thai businesses in Italy. • Lobbying local Thai and Italian commercial authorities and institutions, and enhancing our communication network. • Helping to forge agreements between businesses; developing positive working relationships both within the local business community and with the diverse public and private institutions of Thailand. • Assisting our valued members, whose varied professional skills have been honed and honored by countless years of experience throughout Asia. • Promoting social and cultural activities in hopes of creating a positive, dynamic environment for Italian business in the markets where TICC operates. • Providing members with exposure through our strategic publicity projects: TICC’s website (www. thaitch.org), monthly e-newsletter, bi-monthly magazine Informa, and annual business directory Italy in Thailand. And as part of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce, you will have access to exclusive services and the opportunity to participate in special activities, reserved only for members.

OUTLOOK THAILAND Economy-overview Thailand enjoyed solid growth from 2000 to 2008 thanks to the well-developed infrastructure, a free-enterprise economy, generally pro-investment policies, and strong export industries, - averaging more than 4% per year - as it recovered from the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98. Thai exports - mostly machinery and electronic components, agricultural commodities, and jewelry - continue to drive the economy, accounting for more than half of GDP. The global financial crisis of 2008-09 severely cut Thailand’s exports, with most sectors experiencing double-digit drops. In 2009, the economy contracted 2.2%. In 2010, Thailand’s economy expanded 7.6%, its fastest pace since 1995, as exports rebounded from their depressed 2009 level. Antigovernment protests during March-May and the country’s polarized political situation had - at most - a temporary impact on business and consumer confidence. Although tourism was hit hard during the protests, its quick recovery helped boost consumer confidence to new highs. Moreover, business and investor sentiment remained buoyant as Thailand’s stock market grew almost 5% during the three-month period. According to the forecast of the Economist Intelligence Unit, GDP growth in the Thai economy will come in around 4% in 2011, with political uncertainty continuing to undermine consumer and business confidence. However, as in the first half of 2010, although political risks could hinder future investment, business operations in Thailand (particularly in the country’s industrial zones) are likely to be generally unaffected in any direct way by political unrest. Thus, as long as global demand continues to grow, Thailand’s export-oriented manufacturers should continue to reap the benefits. It should be noted that EIU consider a “double-dip” recession in the world economy to be unlikely, and believe that the current softening of global growth is best understood as a natural adjustment following a period of unsustainably rapid stimulus-driven expansion since mid-2009. In international trade, the Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that Thailand’s current trade account will remain in the black, but the surplus will decline to the equivalent of 4.3% of GDP on average in 2010-11, from 7.7% in 2009 when merchandise imports contracted even more sharply than exports. Although the recovery in global demand is slackening, EIU foresees Thailand’s exporters will continue to show growth in revenue and will maintain their competitiveness especially in the electronics and vehicles sectors. The import bill will also rise in 2010-11 as growth in consumption and investment resumes. The increase in imports will be particularly strong this year, reflecting the steep drop recorded last year.
Automotive
OUTLOOK THAILAND
The Thai automotive industry has foreseen a bright prospect in the Year of the Rabbit. Cumulative new vehicles sales for the first 10 months of 2010 have shown substantial growth, rising 49.7% year-on-year to reach 628,361 units, according to figures compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand. A recovery of consumer demand (amid a wider economic recovery from last year’s recession, and a low interest rate environment) has helped to buoy auto sales this year, even against a backdrop of continued political strife. The export performance so far in 2010 outstrips the expectations of the market by a considerable margin. With the opening of new export-oriented production facilities over the coming years, export growth should remain firm throughout our forecast period.
Alternative energy Thanks to the natural presence of bio fuels raw materials, ideal geographical position and institutional efforts (tax incentives and feed in tariffs), the renewable energy sector in Thailand is one of the most interesting and promising both in the short and in the long term. The amount of energy produced with renewable sources is now only at the 3 % of the total amd the strong growth of traditional sources costs suggest that an investment in alternative energies in Thailand could be particularly effective in the medium term. The opportunities include all the forms of alternative energy, from solar energy to wind power and hydroelectricity. Specifically, in terms of quantity, the most affordable kind of renewable energy is represented by biomass, bio fuels and biogas, due, principally, to the massive agricultural base (cassava, sugar cane, palm oil, rice etc.).

Business Directory 2011
Packaging The growth of this sector, approximately 10-15% per year, is a good index of the attractiveness of this market. As a result of the slowdown in the global economy, packaging manufacturers have faced increasing raw material and distribution costs. Due to their stronger financial capacities, large-scale packaging manufacturers are making headway in technological investment. Consequently, the products of these larger players are being increasingly sought after, particularly amongst the technologically-orientated products such as high-end skin care brands and other premium cosmetics. Thus, small-to-medium sized packagers are being pushed aside, large numbers of small packaging manufacturers continue to disappear from the market as a result of this trend.
Machinery Boasting 50,000 enterprises and 400,000 workers, Thailand’s machinery and metalworking industry resounds with activity. Machinery remains the number one imported goods from Italy. Demand for more sophisticated machinery is growing, especially among domestic downstream industries, creating attractive opportunities for investors. This is because even with its extensive size, the local industry offers a limited supply of high-end machinery and parts, leaving many companies looking for imports. In fact, machinery and parts rank among Thailand’s top 5 most imported goods. Thailand’s status as a regional export hub also allows local machinery and parts suppliers to benefit from the economic growth of its neighbors, favorable trade relations with the signing of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) is adding fuel to Thai machinery and parts exports. Growth looks likely to continue as demand from developing nations such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia strengthens.
Furniture The 20th century saw Thailand emerge as the world’s premier supplier of teak wood and products, with the durable hard wood being used for furniture, flooring, in ship production and in countless other ways. The export of furniture from Thailand is dominated by wooden products and the furniture industry in Thailand has experience strong growth over the past decade even if the country has faced numerous problems (illegal logging, ineffective forest management, expansion of agriculture and livestock breeding, and shifting cultivation). The 70% of exported furniture s composed indeed by wooden products. The second largest is the metal furniture with the 10 %. Now, Thailand’s furniture industry is one of the strongest in the territory due to its superior production quality of Thai Teak, work ethic, innovative modern styling, and flexibility in material use as well as the county’s relatively calm economic situation compared to competitors in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Wine Thailand’s wine industry has become one of the most prosperous industries of Southeast Asia only within the past decade. Thailand is just recently attempting to blossom into a major wine producer with the change in its trends of perceptions. These are the lower percentage of alcohol content in wine, the complement of its spicy foods, reported health benefits of wine consumption, and the increased tourism it brings to the country. It was previously thought that grapes would only grow in between the 30th and 50th latitude lines but Thailand’s growing wine industry changes this theory, which is why it is referred to as the “New Latitude Wine”. The countries climate is sufficient for harvesting grapes twice a year, the Summer Harvest in July August and the Winter Harvest in February through March. Wine consists of 20% of alcoholic beverages in Thailand and 80% is red wine. Thailand’s wine industry focuses on enhancing its quality of wine and the exportation of its products rather than its local sales. An estimated 10 % of the Thai population drinks wine. The only visible gap is due to the Thailand’s tax system, which is outdated and drastically affects the countries wine industry.

Tourism Thailand’s tourism sector is beginning to recover and should reach over 15 million visitors in 2011 according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Asian tourism to Thailand has increased dramatically over the June period, largely due to the strength of their economies compared to the European and American markets and the easing of political turmoils previously affecting Thailand. Tourism revenues account for 6% of Thailand’s GDP. According to deputy government spokesman Watchara Kannika, the Cabinet has agreed to extend incentive measures from April 1, 2010, to March 31, 2011. Apart from the visa fee exemption policy, other measures include reduced aircraft landing and parking fees, providing free-of-charge riot protection insurance worth USD10,000 for each foreign tourist and boosting domestic spending. There are many positive indicators of a promising year for Thai tourism in 2011. They include the stabilization of the Thai political situation, with foreign governments easing their travel warnings about Thailand, the “Amazing Thailand” theme has gained worldwide recognition, as it built up the country’s strong brand and positioning as a destination that offers tremendous value-for-money, a unique culture, and a wide variety of experiences to visitors.
Fairs During the 2011 a large amount of fairs will take place in Thailand. The most important are the GEMS (Bangkok gems and jewelry fair) in the end of February, the TIFF (Thailand international furniture fair) in March, the BIFF (Bangkok international fashion fair) and BIL (Bangkok international leather fair) in April, the BIG (Bangkok international gift fair) and BIH (Bangkok international houseware fair) in April, the Thai Fex- World of food of Asia 2011 in the end of May and a lot of other exhibitions organized during all the year, located mainly in Bangkok and covering all the most important industrial facets.
Garments and textiles
OUTLOOK THAILAND
Thailand has a long history of textile and clothing production. Imn the 1999 the value of exports was about 5.2 billions odf dollars in a declining trend in the following years. The export of garments and textiles from Thailand is heavily influenced by membership in the Multi-Fiber Agreement (MFA) and Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC). In order for their businesses to survive the Ministry of Industry has come up with measures to increase Thai textile industry’s market share in the ASEAN market. The strong currency also makes it nearly impossible for the labor-intensive garment industry to continue operating in Thailand, the association president further explained he major challenges that are confronted by the garment manufacturers of Thailand include greater manufacturing costs due to the increase in the value of the home currency (baht) and higher wages in the domestic industries, has forced the manufacturers to think about foreign investments, particularly in the neighboring countries. In this connection, it must be noted that if the overseas expansion is not profitable, it is better to focus within the country. The success of the Thai government initiatives to modernize the clothing and textile industry along with the adaptability of the individual companies will largely determine if the industry remains an integral part of the economy, or if it is indeed a ‘sunset’ industry as some have predicted.

OUTLOOK ITALY Economy- overview The economy of Italy has a diversified nature, which is divided into a developed industrial north, dominated by private companies, and a less-developed, welfare-dependent, agricultural south, with high unemployment. The Italian economy is driven in large part by the manufacture of high-quality consumer goods, produced by small and medium-sized enterprises, many of them family owned. Italy also has a sizable underground economy, which by some estimates accounts for as much as 15% of GDP. These activities are most common within the agriculture, construction, and service sectors. Italy has moved slowly on implementing needed structural reforms, such as reducing graft, overhauling costly entitlement programs, and increasing employment opportunities for young workers, particularly women. The international financial crisis worsened conditions in Italy’s labor market, with unemployment rising from 6.2% in 2007 to 8.4% in 2010, but in the longer-term Italy’s low fertility rate and quota-driven immigration policies will increasingly strain its economy. A rise in exports and investment driven by the global economic recovery nevertheless helped the economy grow by about 1% in 2010 following a 5% contraction in 2009. The Italian government has struggled to limit government spending, but Italy’s exceedingly high public debt remains above 115% of GDP, and its fiscal deficit - just 1.5% of GDP in 2007 - exceeded 5% in 2009 and 2010, as the costs of servicing the country’s debt rose.
Exhibitions and Trade Fairs A wide range of fairs are organized in Italy each year (over 1.000 events). Possibly, every kind of product and industry has its own exhibition in the Italian peninsula. Naturally, the country’s strengths (food, craftsmanship, fashion etc.) are promoted with more fairs. The preparations for the International EXPO for the 2015 permit, also, to organize events in the new and futuristic fairs area of Milano-Rho Fiera. Especially in Italy, the fairs are an irreplaceable mean to reach major popularity and promotion between both the specialist of the field and the final potential customers.
Furniture The supremacy of Italy in the European exportation is a sign of the high quality and historic tradition of the Bel paese in the furniture market. In Italy, there are long traditions of furniture making, without going back to remote historical periods, suffice it to say that many currently existing furniture manufacturing companies began operating on a small or family basis in the early 1900s. Today, the main furniture producing areas of Italy are the Brianza (a zone in the province of Milan), the Veneto and the Marche. Decades of experience have resulted in the development of skilled workers and sophisticated machinery able to turn out quality Italian furniture at all price levels. A lot of exhibitions are organized aiming to promote the furniture sector, without any doubts the most important is surely the Salone internazionale del mobile (International Furniture Fair) of Milan, organized usually in April.
OUTLOOK ITALY
Packaging The success in the packaging market for the Italian firm is due mainly to the skill to understand the development of packaging sided markets. In fact, one of the main points of strength is related to the capacity of innovation of the Italian firm which is translated in a positive market positioning, especially for what concerns the export, the production of ackaging is the 6 % of the global production. The level of this innovation is particularly visible in the development of new way of packaging for pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and healthcare products. The size of the market is notable (more than 25 billions of Euro) and the high level of export grant to Italy the chance to remain in a positive production trend.
016
Business Directory 2011
Machinery The value of this industry for Italy is vital in particular for the exports. The huge amount of machinery sells beyond the national borders permit to Italy to be the second exporter after Germany. The range of products sells go from rubber & plastics machine to agricultural machines. The same market structure is much diversified and includes both SMEs and big colossus. The number of persons employed is about 12.000 and, mainly, the majority of the companies belong to ASSOCOMAPLAST. Thanks to the excellent performances, this industry is able to reach every year a good trade surplus.
Fashion Without any doubt one of the major strength of the Italian country is related to his capacities of innovativeness and creativity. These two concepts are pretty clear and visible for the case of the fashion industry. From the age of the traditional handcrafters to the actual development and success of big companies (Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Armani, Versace, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, Benetton etc.) Italy has always assumed a role of protagonist in the launch and empowerment of the style in the world. Not casualness the fact that Milan is considered one of the main fashion capitals of the world. With revenues for over 48 billion euro, 70.000 companies and 700.000 people employed, Italy is the most active country in the world, in terms of quantity, second only to China, and holds leadership in the prĂŞt-Ă -porter, despite Italy not being favored by the richness of raw materials or the cost of labor force. The challenges to this industry are many as the competition with the other international brand (mainly French, American and English), the low-cost challenge and chiefly the plague of counterfeiting. But thanks to the skills of the Italian entrepreneurs and the financial support of the government is agreeable to believe that Italy will face positively also this new demanding challenges. ITALY
