Ballenesque Roger Ballen: A Retrospective Roger Ballen • Introduction by Robert J. C. Young 2

Collector’s Edition also available

ISBN 978 0 500 544938 £325.00 slipcased Limited to 100 copies (+ 5 artist’s copies) numbered 1–100. Includes a print of ‘Candlelight’ (2014), signed and numbered by Roger Ballen.

Roger Ballen is one of the most important and original art photographers working today. Best known for his probing, often challenging images that exist in a space between painting, drawing, installation and photography, he has achieved global recognition with a series of startling monographs and exhibitions spanning some four decades. Yet until now, no comprehensive retrospective on this highly regarded artist has been released. Based on an entirely new appraisal of Ballen’s archive, one that looks beyond his monographic projects for the first time, Ballenesque takes the reader on a visual, chronological tour of the photographer’s entire oeuvre, including both the iconic images and previously unpublished works. At the heart of the book is Ballen’s own exploration of his style – of those particular qualities that make his work so compellingly his own. Featuring reflective texts by Ballen himself, the book offers a distinctly personal account of the photographer’s career to date, including rare and privileged insights into Ballen’s photographic practice and the major influences that have helped shape his world view. Every key stage in Ballen’s creative journey is explored – a journey that, for Ballen, has been both an outward and an inward exploration of the self. With an introduction by Robert J. C. Young, Ballenesque provides not only an entirely new way of seeing Ballen’s work for those already familiar with his career, but also a comprehensive introduction for those encountering his photographs for the first time.

Harry Gruyaert: East/West Harry Gruyaert • Introduction by David Campany

4

For more than forty years, Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert has been recording the subtle chromatic vibrations of the world around him. At a time when the East and West were divided politically, his quest for light and sensuality led him to capture the colours of two very different worlds: the vibrant glitziness of Las Vegas and Los Angeles in 1981, and the austere restraint of Moscow in 1989, just before the fall of the Soviet Union. Presented in an innovative, double-faced half-slipcase, this two-volume publication reproduces almost 100 photographs from the series, nearly seventy for the very first time.

Celebrated Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas offers a remarkable commentary on her work and the role of the documentary photographer in this landmark book Susan Meiselas is an award-winning documentary photographer, whose work has been published in numerous books and exhibited internationally in galleries including the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona and Jeu de Paume in Paris. 978 0 500 093955 £19.95

This landmark book offers a synthesis of celebrated Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas’s views on her work and the role of the documentary photographer. Through text drawn largely from exclusive interviews with editor Mark Holborn, she offers a remarkable commentary on her career, from early work with carnival strippers, through groundbreaking reportage on Nicaragua and El Salvador, to projects encompassing subjects as varied as the Dani tribe of Indonesia, the Kurds of Northern Iraq and victims of domestic violence in California. Central to Meiselas’s work are themes of collaboration, return and exchange. With over 110 photographs – some classics, others rarely published – this book demonstrates how the frontline on which Meiselas has worked involves a bearing of witness and a gathering of evidence. As Meiselas has stated: ‘To continue on is to be curious – to be compelled to confront, to examine, to expose, to engage, and not know where you will end up or how the journey will change you. The frontline is always a choice.’ This publication coincides with a major retrospective exhibition at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, in October 2017, and at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, in February 2018.

An exhibition will be held at the Bündner Kunstmuseum, Chur, Switzerland, in February 2018.

While the Fires Burn A Glacier Odyssey Daniel Schwartz In 2009, Daniel Schwartz began a photographic art project documenting the disappearance of glaciers around the world, intending it as a catalyst for reflections on climate history and the relationship between glacial cycles and human lifespan, on natural ecology and human ‘progress’. The project’s geographical field of interest extends from today’s Alpine cryosphere to areas of prehistoric glaciation in what is now the great plain of Switzerland, to as far afield as Pakistan (Karakoram range), Uganda (Rwenzori range) and Peru (Cordillera Blanca), all of which demonstrate dramatically shrinking glaciers at differing stages. The photographer has travelled widely over many years, creating unique new views of rarely photographed equatorial African glaciers. Combining spectacular close aerial photography with archive documents, Schwartz links visual art and the natural sciences, continuing an interdisciplinary tradition with roots in early 18th-century Switzerland, the birthplace of glaciology. These beautiful photographs, shot in exceptional and arresting detail, define new ways to examine glaciers as a functional archive of human presence, and to consider human intervention in natural history.

An exceptional selection of photographs from Record, Daido Moriyama’s selfcurated journal, published in the early 1970s and from 2006 to the present day Mark Holborn is an editor and designer. His many publications include Antony Gormley on Sculpture and Susan Meiselas: On the Frontline (see p5).

Daido Moriyama: Record Edited by Mark Holborn

‘I like Somerset Maugham’s phrase that when it rains, you should write that it rained. That’s why I started Record thirty-six years ago at the age of thirty-four. I probably also thought of photography that way. And now it suddenly all comes back to me: the nameless light, the city, the time’ Daido Moriyama

Inspired by the work of an earlier generation of Japanese photographers, especially by Shomei Tomatsu, and by William Klein’s seminal photographic book on New York, Daido Moriyama moved from Osaka to Tokyo in the early 1960s to become a photographer. He became the leading exponent of a fierce new photographic style that corresponded perfectly to the abrasive and intense climate of Tokyo during a period of great social upheaval. His black and white pictures were marked by fierce contrast and fragmentary, even scratched, frames, which concealed his virtuoso printing. Between June 1972 and July 1973 he produced his own magazine publication, Kiroku, which was then referred to as Record. It became a diaristic journal of his work as it developed. Ten years ago he was able to resume publication of Record, which gradually expanded in extent. To date he has published thirty issues, a number of them including colour. The publication of Record as a book enables work from all thirty issues to be edited into a single sequence, punctuated by Moriyama’s own text as it appeared in the magazines. Beside the pictures taken on his familiar ground in Tokyo and Osaka, Moriyama photographed the streets of New York, Los Angeles, Florence, Paris and London as he would have recorded the lanes and alleys of his hometowns. Once regarded as the leading Japanese photographer of his generation, Moriyama has come to transcend such a description. He is an artist in constant motion and his subject matter is both stark and universal.

William Wegman: Being Human William A. Ewing William Wegman is a world-renowned American artist whose paintings, photographs, videos and drawings have been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. Today he is perhaps best known for his collaborations with his longstanding muses, an ever-expanding cast of Weimaraners, for whom performing elaborate scenarios or merely posing demurely for their portraits comes as second nature. Curated in collaboration with distinguished photography author William A. Ewing, William Wegman: Being Human is the most extensive collection of Wegman’s photographic work yet to be published. It is organized thematically, presenting a wealth of exceptional work in such a way as to highlight the versatility of Wegman’s ever-inventive mind as he explores what it means to be human. From portraits of characters we so easily recognize – a suburban housewife, a famous actor, a nightclub singer, a golfer dressed in plaid – to imagery that toys with a wide range of visual languages, Wegman quotes freely from fashion photography, Cubism, colour theory, the tradition of the nude and the history of art itself. It is easy to see why Wegman’s work appeals both to the art world and to a popular audience appreciative of his wit and humour. With over 300 images supported by essays by Ewing and Wegman, and an interview that explores the key concepts of the book, Wegman’s approach to his subjects and their life in the studio, Being Human celebrates a creative partnership – a relationship between an artist and his muses – that continues to this day. It will delight and engage both those who are new to Wegman’s work and those who have admired his art for many years.

This comprehensive selection of his revealing portraits – many not previously published in book form – accompanied by Michals’s inimitable, sometimes hilarious, observations and reminiscences, will delight his fans and engage new admirers.

Jim Shaughnessy: Essential Witness Sixty Years of Railroad Photography Introduction by Kevin P. Keefe • Edited by Wendy Burton and Jeff Brouws

‘A master in the massive effects of black and white’ Lucius Beebe

Jim Shaughnessy began documenting the rapidly changing railroad scene in the northeastern United States in the late 1940s. His interests and travels also took him to other areas of the country to document the Rio Grande narrow gauge in Colorado, the UP Big Boys in Wyoming, and various locations in Canada. He was able to record the dramatic transition between the steam and diesel eras as well as document and record for posterity the workers behind the machines operating in the depots, roundhouses and back shops of the American railroad environment. Essential Witness includes some 150 duotone photographs taken between 1948 and 1970, with emphasis on the 1950s and 1960s. Images include landscapes, cities and towns; action shots of formidable trains barrelling down the tracks; snaps of weary railroad workers; nighttime photos of shadowy enclaves within the rail yard; and many more.

Stephen Shore Edited by Quentin Bajac

12

One of the most significant photographers of our time, Stephen Shore has often been considered alongside other artists who rose to prominence in the 1970s by capturing the mundane aspects of American popular culture in straightforward, unglamorous images. But Shore has worked with many forms of photography, switching from cheap automatic cameras to largeformat cameras in the 1970s, pioneering the use of colour before returning to black and white in the 1990s, and in the 2000s taking up the opportunities of digital photography, digital printing and social media. Stephen Shore encompasses the entirety of the artist’s work of the last five decades, during which he has conducted a continual, restless interrogation of image making, from the gelatin silver prints he made as a teenager to his current engagement with digital platforms. Published to accompany the major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the book allows for a fuller understanding of Shore’s work, and demonstrates his singular vision – defined by an interest in daily life, a taste for serial and often systematic approaches, a strong intellectual underpinning, a restrained style, sly humour and visual casualness – and uncompromising pursuit of photography’s possibilities.

Firecrackers Female Photographers Now Fiona Rogers and Max Houghton The photographic industry – its exhibitions, galleries, publications and auctions – employs thousands of women, but champions mostly men. To begin to redress the balance, here is a timely presentation of the work of over thirty female photographers working today. This book is predominantly a celebration of some of the most inquisitive, intelligent and daring photography being created now. The stories the photographers tell are the most pressing social, political and personal issues seen through the female lens. Firecracker, established in 2011 by Fiona Rogers, is a platform dedicated to supporting female photographers worldwide by showcasing their work. Building upon Firecracker’s foundations, this book brings together photography that encompasses an eclectic variety of styles, techniques and locations, from Alma Haser’s futuristic series of portraits that use origami to create 3D sculptures within the frame, to Laura El-Tantawy’s filmic and intensely personal series on political protest in Cairo. There is a recurring theme throughout the book that serves to unite these extraordinary women and their work: the exploration of marginalized individuals and under-discussed subjects, seen by fresh eyes. Fiona Rogers and Max Houghton offer insightful authorship and curation. In their respective, well-established roles in the industry they understand, influence and advocate for contemporary documentary photography today.

Skull Lynn Stern • Essay by Donald Kuspit

18

For the last twenty-five years, Lynn Stern has been photographing skulls, both human and animal, some clearly recognizable and some highly abstract. Skull presents the resulting eight series – several of which have never been seen and some not previously seen in their entirety. Her images often include the symbolic form of the circle, alluding to both the emptiness of infinity as well as the possibility of oneness. Formally distinct yet overlapping thematically, these series offer a powerful exploration of the idea of death. Unlike many photographers, Stern has no interest in representing people, places or things, aiming instead to ‘de-literalize whatever I photograph.’ An extended essay by renowned art critic Donald Kuspit contextualizes Stern’s work within art history through comparisons with paintings, sculptures and photographs made during the last seven centuries of Western art. It accompanies nearly 150 tritone and quadratone reproductions of Stern’s photographs, as well as over forty illustrations of other artists’ work.

Fashion + Gender Patrick Mauriès ‘This ad is gender neutral’, proclaimed a recent poster for the fashion brand Diesel; ‘I resist definitions’, announced a Calvin Klein ad; while a Louis Vuitton shoot featured Jaden Smith, son of Hollywood actor Will Smith, wearing a skirt like a natural. Fashion magazines have printed countless features on the blurring of gender boundaries, while brands including Yves Saint-Laurent, Gucci, Burberry, Givenchy and Dolce & Gabbana have all interpreted this theme in their own individual style. The previous turn of the century was as obsessed with androgyny as this one, as seen in the art of Edward Burne-Jones and Gustave Moreau, or the writings of Honoré de Balzac and the mystic Joséphin Péladan. From the late 19th to the early 21st century, the traditional binary genders have blended: from Berlin in the 1920s, through 1930s Hollywood with Garbo and Dietrich, to the androgynous pop stars of the 1970s and beyond. What do these variations on a theme have in common? What has caused the dizzying resurgence of androgyny? Why has this concept, a staple of ancient myth first discussed in Plato’s Symposium, been revived today? Led by a striking selection of images – from esoteric 19th-century paintings to the work of some of the world’s greatest fashion photographers – this book presents a condensed cultural history of androgyny, drawing on the worlds of art and literature to give us a deeper understanding of the timeless human drive to break free from conventional categories.

The House of Worth, 1858–1954 The Birth of Haute Couture Chantal Trubert-Tollu, Françoise Tétart-Vittu, Jean-Marie MartinHattemberg and Fabrice Olivieri • Foreword by Christian Lacroix Described by Alexander McQueen, who claimed him as a key influence, as ‘the first Englishman to take Paris on, and the first male designer to impact female clothes’, Charles Frederick Worth was inspired by a love of fine art, luxurious fabrics and his vision of the female ideal. Known as ‘the father of haute couture’, he was the first to set out to dictate new styles and silhouettes to his elite clientele – not the other way around – hosting them in his rue de la Paix salons, which included ground-breaking ‘sportswear’ and ‘maternity’ departments, as well as silk, velvet and brocade rooms, and a special salon with closed shutters and gas lighting designed to allow clients to try on ball gowns in lighting conditions precisely matched to those of the event. Organized chronologically and illustrated with striking ensembles (including photographs of details that reveal the garments’ intricate construction and craftsmanship), paintings and documents sourced from both private family archives and the best fashion collections from museums around the world, The House of Worth is an inspiring tribute to the house that started it all.

In 1947 – seventy years ago – Christian Dior presented his first collection and heralded the birth of a new fashion silhouette for women. After the austerity of the war years, the cinched waistlines, full skirts and soft shoulders of the New Look signalled a revival of Parisian luxury. Paris regained its place as the global capital of fashion and the name of Dior became a synonym for haute couture. For this book, designed by Fabien Baron, seventy of the most memorable looks created by Christian Dior and his successors – Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri – have been specially selected and photographed in intimate detail. These wonderful designs are also featured in original sketches, runway shots and fashion shoots by the world’s greatest fashion photographers. The classic elements of Dior are explored in depth: the concept of line and architecture in fashion; the influence of history and art (the Palace of Versailles, the Empire style, Impressionism, the Belle Époque, the Ballets Russes, Picasso, Dalí, Pollock); the use of colour; the influence of gardens and landscapes as sources of inspiration; and, of course, the brand’s famous muses and clients: the Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich, Princess Grace of Monaco, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Isabelle Adjani, Princess Diana, Marion Cotillard, Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman and Jennifer Lawrence, among many others. Expedition Fashion from the Extreme Patricia Mears, Lacey Flint, Sarah Pickman, Jonathan Faiers, Elizabeth Way and Ariele Elia Today – from haute couture to ready-to-wear – parkas, puffer coats and backpacks, as well as garments made of neoprene and Mylar, are everywhere. But the roots of these ubiquitous items of dress and cutting-edge textiles are rarely acknowledged or understood. Inspired by the so-called ‘heroic era’ of polar navigation (1890–1922), extreme mountain climbing, deep sea exploration, and journeys to outer space, Expedition explores how garments made for the most inhospitable environments on earth and beyond have inspired more than sixty years of fantastical, otherworldly fashions. Lavishly illustrated throughout, it features some 150 images, including high fashion magazine editorials by Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and others; museum objects from the permanent collections of The Museum at FIT and the American Museum of Natural History; and unpublished photographs of early expeditions in the archives of the Explorer’s Club in New York.

The animal kingdom has been a source of inspiration for jewelers since the days of antiquity. Chosen for their symbolism, their beauty or their personality, a whole menagerie of creatures has been depicted in gemstones and precious metals, ranging from fantastical dragons, griffins and sphinxes, to wild beasts such as boars and big cats, to the delicate forms of birds, fish and even insects. The faunal pieces in this book have been specially selected from the magnificent jewelry collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and include necklaces and earrings, bracelets and brooches by legendary names such as Boucheron, Falize and Lalique. They stretch from the Renaissance revival of the 19th century to the elegant lines of Art Nouveau and beyond, through to the playful naivety of modernist designs by Jean Lurçat and Line Vautrin. Beautifully photographed by Jean-Marie del Moral, this second title in the series that began with Flora: The Art of Jewelry is packed with clever and witty works of art that will delight all lovers of jewelry and nature.

Fabergé and the Russian Crafts Tradition An Empire’s Legacy Margaret Kelly Trombly • Contributions by William R. Johnston, Karen Kettering, Robert Mintz and Diana Scarisbrick The decorative arts flourished in Russia under the patronage of the tsars and their courts, whose apparently limitless resources supported the production of some of the most technically sophisticated works of art ever made. With the onset of the Russian Revolution, a few individuals helped bring many of these works of art to Europe and then into major private and public collections in the United States, including that of the Walters Art Museum. Published on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the revolution, this book tells the stories of the initial dispersal of these objects and of the collectors and dealers through whose hands they passed. Fabergé and the Russian Crafts Tradition gives a fascinating overview of Russian decorative arts, revealing a highly accomplished crafts tradition that persisted over nine centuries. It includes works by Peter Carl Fabergé and his workshop, jewelled Byzantine icons, silver drinking vessels and intricate enamels. Most notable are two extraordinary Fabergé eggs that were once in the Russian Imperial collection, including one that opens up to reveal a miniature gold replica of the Gatchina Palace, near St Petersburg.

In addition to forming a collection of trunks – his first motivation and the one he announced publicly – his roving eye lit upon rare antique travel articles, locks and escutcheons, hand tools, perfume bottles, African masks, walking sticks, vintage children’s toys, books, hotel labels (usually fixed on customers’ trunks), printed monograms and other typographical rarities. Together they form a rich personal evocation of curiosités industrielles, or quirks of the trade, as Gaston-Louis liked to call them. This collection will capture the imagination of anyone inspired by bizarre and eclectic curiosities, or those with an interest in the cultural taste and interests of someone who lived through the height of the Art Deco period – indeed, someone whose life was defined by the rigours and the rewards of world travel. Plywood is an astonishingly versatile material, made by gluing together layers of cross-grained veneers, creating a pliable board that can be stronger than solid wood. Stylish and practical, plywood offers huge possibilities for experimental design, and it has been used to make a wide range of products, from aeroplanes, boats and automobiles to architecture and furniture. This book traces the history of plywood from its use in 18th-century furniture, through its emergence as an industrial product in the 19th century, to a material celebrated by 20th-century modernists such as Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames. An ideal material for the digital age, plywood has become popular again in recent years and is widely used in contemporary design and manufacture. Produced to accompany an exhibition at the V&A, this book is the first comprehensive study of the history of plywood and its myriad applications throughout the ages, unveiling the stories behind objects that surround us and that we often take for granted. An associated exhibition Plywood: Material of the Modern World, curated by Christopher Wilk and Elizabeth Bisley, will run at the V&A from 15 July to 12 November 2017.

warriors of ancient Siberia Edited by St John Simpson and Svetlana Pankova The Scythians were an ancient nomadic people, who lived in the south Russian steppe from 900 to 200 BC. They established a rich nomadic culture originating in southern Siberia and extending to northern China and as far as the northern Black Sea. Mobility and mastery of local resources were central to their culture and their achievements. Forerunners of the Sarmatians, the Huns, the Turks and the Mongols, the Scythians were feared adversaries and respected neighbours of the Assyrians, Persians and ancient Greeks. They left no written records of their own and historians have previously relied on the descriptions by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus but archaeological research now adds considerable new information about their origins and lifestyle. This book offers unique insights into the life and funerary customs of the Scythians with exceptionally well preserved organic objects buried in conditions of permanent frost in the high Altai mountains. Some of the objects are from new excavations and others come from the famous Siberian Collection of Peter the Great. They include many rare finds of personal garments and possessions made from gold, leather, fur and felt and reveal the impact and achievements of one of the earliest great nomadic peoples. Drawing on the latest research, this new book will appeal to anyone interested in the ancient world and Russian culture.

Published to accompany the first exhibition in Paris of highlights from The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Being Modern tells the stories behind 120 select artworks and design objects acquired by MoMA between the late 19th century and the present, providing a unique insight into the making of one of the greatest collections of modern and contemporary art in the world. Featuring work from all six of the Museum’s departments, from Edward Hopper’s House by the Railroad (1925) to the recently acquired original set of 176 digital emoji, the catalogue highlights the diversity and topicality of MoMA’s collection, and provides a fresh perspective on the modernist canon. The book is organized chronologically according to the year each artwork entered MoMA’s collection. Short texts by museum curators accompany each work, providing an overview of its significance as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the acquisitions process, often an untold aspect of a museum’s history. Rather than presenting the collection as a flawlessly structured, stable entity, the book reveals its complex evolution and wide-ranging scope, demonstrating multiple ways of looking at MoMA’s multidisciplinary collection.

209 illustrations 22.9 x 15.2 cm 360pp paperback ISBN 978 0 500 293423 September £18.95

Eric Karpeles’s lavishly illustrated guide offers a feast for the eyes as it celebrates the close relationship between the visual and literary arts in Proust’s masterpiece. Karpeles has identified and located all of the paintings to which Proust makes exact reference. Where only a painter’s name is mentioned to indicate a certain mood or appearance, he has chosen a representative work to illustrate the impression that Proust sought to evoke. Botticelli’s angels, Manet’s courtesans, Mantegna’s warriors and Carpaccio’s saints stand among Monet’s water lilies and Piranesi’s engravings of Rome, while Karpeles’s essay and lucid contextual commentary explain their significance to Proust. The book closes with extensive notes and a comprehensive index of all painters and paintings mentioned in the novel. With over 200 beautifully reproduced paintings, drawings and engravings, and accompanying texts drawn from the Moncrieff/Kilmartin/Enright translation of In Search of Lost Time, this book is an essential addition to the libraries of Proustians worldwide and a handsome volume in its own right.

Renoir An Intimate Biography Barbara Ehrlich White The joy that permeates Auguste Renoir’s paintings was created by a complicated person, whom even close friends and family members struggled to understand. The world’s leading authority on Renoir’s life and work has written an intimate biography of this most intriguing of Impressionist artists in a narrative interspersed with over a thousand extracts from letters by, to and about Renoir. Drawing on a wealth of unpublished material, Barbara Ehrlich White brings us into direct contact with Renoir as an artist, friend and father, and enables us to appreciate more fully his great paintings. Renoir became hugely popular in the face of great obstacles: thirty years of poverty followed by thirty years of progressive paralysis of his fingers. Close friendship with scores of people who helped him with money, contacts and companionship enabled him to overcome these challenges to create more than 4,000 optimistic, life-affirming paintings. Ehrlich White brings a lifetime of research to bear in her biography to challenge misconceptions around Renoir’s reputation, providing an unparalleled portrait of this multi-faceted and contradictory artist through his own words and those of his friends.

Jasper Johns Pictures within Pictures 1980–2015 Fiona Donovan 48

Jasper Johns is one of the most important artists of our time. This book offers the first comprehensive study of his art since 1980, a period in which the artist has made some of his most moving and challenging work. Looking primarily at Johns’s paintings and works on paper, and drawing on conversations with the artist, Fiona Donovan provides the context for this later work and explores its visual and iconographic complexity. In the years 1980–2015, Johns’s imagery ranged from investigations of his own earlier subject matter and personal history to a much broader humanist discourse. Spiritual, moral and sexual themes run through his work, as well as ruminations on memory and mortality. Donovan also examines associations between poetry and Johns’s art as well as the artist’s absorption with appropriation and abstraction of images taken from such diverse sources as Grünewald’s Isenheim Altarpiece, Cézanne, Picasso, and the Vietnam War photographer Larry Burrows. Johns’s abiding curiosity is reflected in his stylistic changes, and the shifting themes, motifs and moods of his work are all underpinned by his exceptional painterly skill and interest in process, as demonstrated in the magisterial works presented in this book, from ‘The Seasons’ and the ‘Catenary’ paintings to the more recent series, ‘Regrets’. Jasper Johns: Pictures within Pictures provides a unique opportunity to view and further understand the compellingly beautiful and intriguing works by an artist who continues to be at the forefront of American art.

The Militant Muse documents what it meant to be young, ambitious and female in the context of an avant-garde movement defined by celebrated men whose educational, philosophical and literary backgrounds were often quite different from those of their younger lovers and companions. Focusing on the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Whitney Chadwick charts five intense, far-reaching female friendships among the surrealists to show how surrealism and the experiences of war, loss and trauma shaped individual women’s transitions from beloved muses to mature artists. Her vivid account includes the fascinating story of Claude Cahun and Suzanne Malherbe’s subversive activities in occupied Jersey, as well as the experiences of Lee Miller and Valentine Penrose at the frontline. The book draws on personal correspondence between the women, including the extraordinary letters between Leonora Carrington and Leonor Fini following the imprisonment of Carrington’s lover, Max Ernst, and the letter Frida Kahlo shared with her friend and lover Jacqueline Lamba years after it was written in the 1930s during a difficult stay in Paris. This thoroughly engrossing history brings a new perspective to the political context of surrealism, as well as fresh insights on the vital importance of female friendship to artistic and intellectual flowering.

‘A work of refreshing originality’ E. H. Gombrich

‘Bold and brilliant … a modern intellectual classic to sharpen the eye and mind’ Jonathan Jones

‘Brilliant, concise and above all original … shot through with the unique insights of a writer who is also a painter’ Laura Cumming

At the turn of the twenty-first century, many felt sceptical or confused about painting’s on-going cultural relevance. In this context, Julian Bell’s What is Painting? provided an accessible and inspired account of artistic thinking and practice, and of the complexities then facing artists and their audiences. Eighteen years on, the situation is partly reversed. Painting has proved too resilient a practice to be marginalized any longer. Yet is there any sense of forward momentum for the art? Interrogating the factors that have changed our ideas of painting over the past two centuries, Bell addresses relations between figuration and abstraction and between narrative and nonnarrative painting, as well as the waning of conceptual art’s dominance and the proliferation of experiments with the physical limits of painting. He also clarifies general concepts such as ‘expression’ and ‘representation’. Fully revised to provide a fresh look at the situation of painting, this new edition maintains the objective of lucid, historically informative explanation that earned the original edition its status as a text of lasting value. The book provides a general reader’s introduction to theories of painting that is not only reliable, but also stimulating and amusing to read.

Joe Zucker John Elderfield, Terry R. Myers, Alex Bacon and Phong Bui Joe Zucker has forged a powerful artistic persona as a process artist with a certain pop inflection, who not only grapples with formal and theoretical concerns but also explores themes of history, culture and Americana. Despite this, he has flown under the radar of larger public awareness due to the frequent transformations in his art from one style to another, and thus his work has not been easily characterized and identified. This career-spanning survey deals with all of Zucker’s various bodies of work, from his grid paintings of the 1960s to his latest pieces, including the monumental 1000 Brushstrokes (2015–2016). Zucker’s art is rooted in a conceptual framework where tools, materials, processes, procedures, content and subject matter are all interrelated. Working with materials ranging from cotton balls, sash cord, peg board and squeegees to acrylic and rhoplex, and exploring such themes as the grid, the history of cotton, ancient civilizations, an assortment of ‘dubious characters’, paintings that paint themselves, as well as meditations on the studio, Zucker merges materials, process and content – abstract and otherwise – to produce compelling works of extraordinary inventiveness, irony and passion.

‘A delight to read’ Apollo ‘A fresh reappraisal of Hockney’s achievement … a clear and methodical account of the artist’s development’ The Burlington Magazine

The relationship between art and life and between the three-dimensional world and its reinterpretation in two dimensions has long animated the work of David Hockney, the most popular British artist of the past half-century. Marco Livingstone traces those connections from Hockney’s student work of the early 1960s through his acclaimed opera designs since the 1970s and photocollages of the 1980s to his ambitious engagement with the Yorkshire landscape initiated in 2004. Always experimenting with new media and ways of seeing the world, since the mid-1980s Hockney has adventurously embraced new technology, from fax drawings, ‘home-made prints’ and computer drawings to multi-screen videos and drawings created on an iPhone or iPad. This substantially updated edition of the most widely read introduction to the artist’s work, the only book to cover every phase and medium in Hockney’s remarkable career, convincingly demonstrates his always thrilling inventiveness and originality.

‘A pageant of influential art historians of the 20th century’ RA Magazine ‘A delightful book. Beautifully designed, it is a joy to hold and a pleasure to read. … A wonderful book that will be enjoyed by all who have a deep interest in the practice of art history’ Cassone

Which were the books that shaped art history as it developed in the twentieth century? This pioneering volume, newly available in paperback, provides an invaluable roadmap of the field by reassessing the impact of sixteen of the century’s most important works of art history. Initiated by and prepared under the auspices of The Burlington Magazine, each chapter – with writers including John Elderfield, Boris Groys, Susie Nash and Richard Verdi – analyses a single major book, setting out its premises and arguments and mapping the intellectual development of its author, discussing its position within the field of art history, and looking at its significance in the context both of its initial reception and its legacy. The sixteen books include Nikolaus Pevsner’s gospel of Modernism, Pioneers of the Modern Movement, Alfred Barr’s now legendary monograph on Matisse, E. H. Gombrich’s Art and Illusion, Clement Greenberg’s Art and Culture, which had a seismic impact when it was published in 1961, and Rosalind Krauss’s The Originality of the Avant-Garde and Other Modernist Myths, which introduced structuralist and poststructuralist thinking into art historical study. Fostering debate and questioning the very status of art history itself, The Books that Shaped Art History is a concise and brilliant study of the discipline and an invaluable resource for students, teachers, bibliophiles and all those interested in visual culture and its histories.

Cole Campbell and Cole, respected teachers and active researchers, draw on traditional and current scholarship to present complex interpretations as part of an accessible narrative in this new edition of their engaging account of Italian Renaissance art. The book’s unique decade-by-decade structure is easy to follow, and permits the authors to tell the story of art not only in the great centres of Rome, Florence and Venice, but also in a range of other cities and sites throughout Italy, including more in this edition from Naples, Padua and Palermo. This approach allows the artworks to take centre-stage, in contrast to the book’s competitors, which are organized by location or by artist. Other updates for this edition include an expanded first chapter on the Trecento, and a new ‘Techniques and Materials’ appendix that explains and illustrates all of the major art-making processes of the period. Richly illustrated with high-quality reproductions and new photography of recent restorations, it presents the classic canon of Renaissance painting and sculpture in full, while expanding the scope of conventional surveys by offering a more thorough coverage of architecture, decorative and domestic arts, and print media.

Modern Art in Detail 75 Masterpieces Susie Hodge Great works of art cannot be fully understood in a single encounter: to get the most out of modern art, it pays to revisit and reconsider, to reflect and to scrutinize in detail. Modern Art in Detail: 75 Masterpieces spotlights the finer points that even connoisseurs may miss, casting light upon minutiae of a painting, sculpture or art installation that a quick glance will almost certainly fail to reveal. Each work is first presented in full, followed by a spread highlighting key details to provide the reader with a more in-depth understanding. Expert commentary reveals the technical tricks employed by the artist to achieve particular effects. The book also looks at the themes and external and personal factors influencing the creation of an artwork – everything from global political events, to groundbreaking movements such as Cubism, Futurism and Primitivism, and even scientific and mathematical theories, which are often of great relevance. This enlightening and accessible follow-up to the popular Art in Detail examines 75 works of modern art, from Vincent van Gogh’s The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise (1890), to Theaster Gates’s Face Over Time (2016), deftly charting the shift from the supremacy of artistic technique to the more recent dominance of the idea behind the artwork itself.

Light and shade, rhythm, form, space, contour and composition are all covered in detail. Each artist is described through one of their masterpieces, plus a biographical profile and a practical look at the way the drawing was made: the materials and technique, as well as an examination of the ideas and inspiration behind its making and how the artist’s life might reflect their concerns. David Adjaye Living Spaces Edited by Peter Allison For many young architects, houses or domestic buildings are often the first projects they design. For David Adjaye, such early commissions were connected to a rising generation of creatives, artists and personalities. His artistry, clever use of space and inexpensive, unexpected materials resulted in innovative and widely published houses, mainly in London. After twenty years of practice and a raft of high-profile projects around the world, houses represent a smaller portion of Adjaye’s work today, but are more potent as a result. By focusing on projects that are challenging for their sites, complexity or architectural possibility, Adjaye has both expanded and sharpened his domestic design, taking it in new directions. In vivid detail, this monograph presents the nine finest and most recent examples, from Ghana to Brooklyn, from desolate farmlands to urban jungles. The results, presented through elucidating texts and rich visual documentation, confirm the importance of Adjaye’s growing inventiveness and provide powerful new design ideas for the future of residential architecture.

‘A visionary memoir … extraordinary’ Observer

‘An understated gem of a book … gripping’ The Spectator

‘An angry and personal memoir’ Daily Telegraph

‘Everyone in Syria has lived his war. Every day people have fought for their lives, every day has brought a bid for survival, but it is not only bodies that suffer; souls, too, go through these battles, dying a thousand times in anticipation, only to rise up wearily to face another day’ So begins the eyewitness account of Marwa al-Sabouni, a young architect based in war-torn Homs, on Syria’s bitter conflict. Seen through the revealing lens of architecture and depicted with clarity, conviction and deep intelligence, she shares her personal experience of how the built environment directly affects the community that inhabits it, how the stage for civil war has long been set in her country, and how architecture might play a role in reversing the damage. This paperback edition includes a new preface by al-Sabouni in which she reflects on developments in Syria since the book’s first publication in 2016. The Battle for Home reveals uncomfortable truths and asks important questions, but ultimately offers hope for rebuilding both a proud country and a much-needed sense of identity.

Anna Yudina How far can we expand the concept of ‘urban nature’? How would it make us feel? And how is it going to transform our cities – and, eventually, ourselves? Garden City captures the growing global movement among contemporary architects for biodesigning buildings less as ‘skin and bodies – façade and structure’ – and more as living entities, capable of being ecologically autonomous, horticulturally productive and ultimately pleasing to our day-today lifestyles. It presents seventy (mostly completed) projects, a life-affirming range of buildings and design ideas that can be applied to new buildings and those needing rehabilitation. From office buildings that incorporate urban farms and exchange the CO2 produced by humans for food and oxygen produced by plants, to lightweight systems for growing gardens on vertical surfaces; from ‘tree houses’ the size of city blocks to civic buildings that are ‘plugged into’ existing water-management systems – there are rich and often unexpected ideas for every enquiring designer. Noma Bar is one of the world’s most inventive and provocative illustrators. He has developed his own silent language using a limited palette, familiar symbols and pictograms that take on new meanings. He is a master of inscribing double and triple readings into every image, often using negative space to conceal alternative stories, just waiting to be revealed. Bar’s innovative, incisive approach has won him global acclaim and a broad range of commissions, from magazines and newspapers to largescale commercial and artistic projects. Whether a portrait of a divisive public figure or a representation of an emotive social or political issue, Bar meets complex and sensitive subjects head-on, with gentle humour and deftness. This ambitious edition of collected works, selected by and commented on by the illustrator himself, offers a multifaceted and illuminating insight into his inspirations and working practices – which are always full of surprises. It is destined to become a must-have reference source for any student or follower of visual and popular culture.

The Illustrated Dust Jacket 1920–1970 Martin Salisbury The middle decades of the twentieth century saw an extraordinary flourishing of the illustrated, pictorial dust jacket. From the 1920s, as the potential for the book’s protective wrapping to be used for promotion and enticement became clear, artists and illustrators on both sides of the Atlantic applied their talents to this particular art form. Rising to the wide-ranging challenges posed by format and subject matter, leading artists and illustrators, including John Piper, Edward Bawden and John Minton in the UK and Ben Shahn, Edward Gorey and George Salter in the USA, brought their unique personal vision to bear on the world of books. Many of their designs reflect the changing visual styles and motifs of the period, including Bloomsbury, Art Deco, Modernism, postwar neo-romanticism and the Kitchen Sink School. Martin Salisbury has selected over fifty of the artists and illustrators who were active in the period 1920–1970 in the UK and USA, as well as others such as Tove Jansson and Celestino Piatti, and discusses their life and work. A selection of dust jackets – both known and too long forgotten – for each artist reveals how far the book as an artefact had travelled from the days of the plain wrapper in the nineteenth century.

Postmodernism defined the look of 1980s architecture and design. Spearheaded by Michael Graves, Robert Venturi, Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendini, Postmodernism proclaimed the death of modernism and promoted an ironic, fun new way of approaching space, buildings and objects. Its lively and colourful rebellion against modernism’s monotony and dogma spread from architecture to other design disciplines, and promoted the belief that design need not be taken too seriously. Postmodern Design Complete is the first book to take a thoroughgoing look at the movement, which has enjoyed a major revival in recent years. It profiles key creators and introduces the principal figures in the fields of architecture, furniture, graphic design, textiles and product and industrial design. It also presents fourteen seminal and complete homes and their furnishings, and provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary makers. Highly informed and accessible texts are illustrated with images that bring together classics and little-seen rarities, unusual objets d’art and mass-produced items. The book also includes a foreword by Charles Jencks, the critic largely credited with coining the movement, and an afterword by architect Denise Scott Brown, as well as a substantial reference section. All together, this is the one book that the world’s lovers of Postmodernism must have, and in which the design-conscious of any persuasion will discover new treasures.

The Story of The Face The Magazine that Changed Culture Paul Gorman 86

Launched by NME editor and Smash Hits creator Nick Logan in 1980, The Face was Britain’s first youth magazine to present ‘youth subject matter’ beyond music alone. A strong voice of urban identity in the age of Thatcher, it rapidly became an icon of ‘style culture’, the benchmark for the very latest trends in music, fashion, photography and film. The Story of The Face tracks the exciting highs and calamitous lows of the life of the magazine in two parts. Part one focuses on the rise of the magazine in the 1980s, highlighting its striking visual identity – embodied by Neville Brody’s era-defining graphic designs, Nick Knight’s dramatic fashion photography and the ‘Buffalo’ styling of Ray Petri. The Face introduced Spandau Ballet and Boy George; Wham! and Sade, and was an early showcase for the works of Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Weber and Cindy Sherman. In 1990, The Face featured a fifteen-year-old Kate Moss on her first cover campaign. Other iconic cover stars included David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Prince, George Michael and Adam Ant. Part two shows how in the 1990s, after surviving the disastrous Jason Donovan libel suit, the magazine heralded the post-acid house era of Britpop and Brit Art, shifting its focus from London to the regions. However, having become the engine of the booming British magazine industry, The Face met its eventual demise at the end of the decade. With an introduction by Dylan Jones, The Story of The Face is an engaging behind-the-scenes look at the rise and fall of one of the most influential publications of the 1980s and 1990s.

‘Magnificent … Conrad’s writing is fuelled by an amused purview and written with a playful wit’ Dublin Review of Books

In the age of science we remain as bedazzled and bedevilled by myth as our remote ancestors. Laptops and smartphones are sold under a logo that invokes the Garden of Eden’s forbidden fruit; skimpily clad classical nymphs cavort in reality TV shows; Narcissus makes a comeback whenever we snap a selfie. Other mythical creatures – cloned dinosaurs, handsome adolescent vampires, a frisky ‘inner goddess’ with a taste for popsicles – abound in best-selling novels. We may know these stories are fictional, yet we long to believe them. Sixty years after Roland Barthes explored the mythological underpinnings of 1950s consumerism in his seminal Mythologies, our greatest cultural critic, Peter Conrad, takes up the challenge of tracing myths into the 21st century. From the Queen to Caitlyn Jenner, from Tyrannosaurus Rex to Donald Trump, Conrad’s exhilarating book surveys the age-old absurdity of popular culture in his formidably astute but always entertaining style.

Death is the one inevitable fact of life. Throughout the centuries, humanity has sought to come to terms with this sobering thought through art and ritual. The theme of memento mori informs medieval Danse Macabre (Totentanz in Germany), Renaissance paintings of dissected corpses and ‘anatomical Eves’, 19th-century deathbed scenes, funeral effigies, Halloween and paintings of the Last Judgment. A volume of unprecedented breadth and sinister beauty, Death: A Graveside Companion examines a staggering range of cultural attitudes to death. Nineteen experts contribute themed essays on specific aspects of humanity’s cultural legacy of ideas concerning death and objects relating to death. The articles are followed by gallery pages presenting a breathtaking variety of death-related imagery drawn from every major culture, from Neolithic China and Bronze Age Mexico to medieval Germany, 18th-century Nepal and 20th-century France. From skulls to the dance of death, statuettes to ex libris, memento mori to memorabilia, the astonishing collection incorporates high art, low kitsch and all points in between. Featuring never-before-published photographs of the wide-ranging and eclectic art, artifacts and ephemera found in the Richard Harris art collection, Death: A Graveside Companion is an omnibus like no other, packed with morbid inspiration and macabre insights to take to the grave.

Mangasia The Definitive Guide to Asian Comics Paul Gravett • Foreword by Park Chan-wook

90

Forms the basis of a major Barbican exhibition, entitled ‘Mangasia: Wonderlands of Asian Comics’, which will open in Bologna in Autumn 2017 and at Le Lieu Unique in Nantes in Summer 2018 before touring worldwide.

Brimming with vibrant reproductions of rarely seen comic art from across Asia, this authoritative survey brings together the kaleidoscope of creativity and cross-pollination that is Asia’s comics industry. World authority on comic art Paul Gravett charts the evolution of manga from its roots in late 19th-century Japan through the many and varied forms of comics, cartoons and animation created throughout Asia for more than 100 years. He traces the evolving meanings of the myths and legends told and retold by manga artists of every decade, and reveals the development of their cultural and aesthetic ideas. He also explores the explosion of creativity in manga after the Second World War with the emergence of such artists as Osamu Tezuka, whose pioneering Astro Boy spawned a new and much imitated visual dynamic. Gravett highlights how creators have responded to political events since 1950 in the form of propaganda, criticism and commentary in manga magazines, comics and books. The demand for comics to be allowed to deal with non-juvenile subjects has resulted in remarkably powerful and sophisticated graphic novels, although some sexually explicit and emotionally dark adult manga has also attracted criticism. Gravett concludes with a survey of current multi-platform offerings of manga in Asia and the transition from cut-price rental libraries to the booming specialist emporia and comic conventions of the digital age.

France is a Feast The Photographic Journey of Paul and Julia Child Alix Prud’homme and Katie Pratt 96

Julia Child was a much-loved American chef, author and television personality, widely recognized for bringing French cuisine to the American public. France is a Feast documents her discovery of French cooking and the French way of life. Julia’s journey began under the guidance of her husband Paul, a passionate photographer. Paul and Julia Child moved to Paris in 1948 where he was the cultural attaché for the US Information Service in Paris, and in this role he first met Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Brassaï and other leading lights of the photography world. As Julia recalled, ‘Paris was wonderfully walkable, and it was a natural subject for Paul.’ Their wanderings through France’s cities, towns and countryside were brilliantly captured in Paul’s compelling photographs, and helped lead to the classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking, which led in turn to Julia’s celebrated career in books and on television. Paul Child was an accomplished photographer (his work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, acquired by Edward Steichen), but his work remained out of the public eye until the publication of Julia Child’s bestselling memoir My Life in France, which included many of his photographs. In helping to tell Julia’s story, they also brought to light the remarkable photographic achievement of Paul Child.

LA NY is a dazzling visual tale of two cities, Los Angeles and New York, seen from the air. Photographed straight down at a 90-degree angle to emphasise the particular patterns of place, how the urban grid adapts to local topography, and how the topography itself adapts to human purposes, Jeffrey Milstein’s work deftly combines architecture, science and art to reveal these two cities as never before. Using high-resolution cameras mounted to a stabilizing gyro, Milstein leaned out of helicopters over Los Angeles where he grew up and over New York where he now lives, capturing iconic buildings and landmarks, alongside suburban housing developments, apartment complexes, commercial hubs, entertainment and financial centres, and airports and shipping terminals. In addition to the urban topography, he also captured events and activities, such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and outings to the beach.

HISTORY

A refreshingly original history of the lost countries of the 19th and 20th centuries, examined and illustrated with the countries’ postage stamps

Nowherelands An Atlas of Vanished Countries Bjørn Berge A multitude of countries that once existed have since been erased from the map, lost to time and with little or no chance of resurrection. Varying vastly in size and shape, location and longevity, the fifty ‘nowherelands’ featured in this book are united by one fact: all of them issued their own stamps. These tiny, ephemeral artifacts not only prove that the states did in fact exist but also, as little slips of propaganda, tell us something about their history and how they wished to be perceived, both at home and abroad. Drawing on fiction and eyewitness accounts as well as historical sources, Bjørn Berge’s witty text casts an unconventional eye on these lesser-known states, teasing out informative anecdotes and fascinating facts. Some of their names, such as Biafra or New Brunswick, will be relatively familiar. Others, such as Labuan, Tannu Tuva and Inini, are far less recognizable. But all of these lost nations have tales to tell, whether they were as short-lived as Eastern Karelia, which lasted only a few weeks during the Soviet–Finnish War of 1922, or as enduring as the Orange Free State, a Boer republic that celebrated half a century as an independent state in the late 1800s. Nowherelands is a wholly original history book that will intrigue anyone keen to understand what it means for any particular corner of the earth to be called a nation.

Bjørn Berge is an architect and researcher. He is the author of a number of academic books on architecture and ecology.

‘I know of no other book in English that provides such a good region by region description of the Inca empire … Both a useful review of the main Inca sites and a new perspective on the structure of the empire’ Bill Sillar, Institute of Archaeology, University College London

The Incas built one of the largest empires of the ancient world – its sheer scale makes their achievement truly remarkable. At its zenith it extended northwards from the Inca capital Cusco along the Andes to embrace parts of modern Peru and Ecuador, and southwards into Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Uniquely, the authors look in detail at Cusco and at the four parts of the empire, following the vast road system to explore not just famous sites such as Machu Picchu, but all the major regional settlements. This vivid portrait shows how the Incas ruled some peoples directly but allowed others to maintain their traditional leaders with little interference. The concluding chapter is devoted to the end of the empire: the arrival of the Spaniards, the assassination of the Inca ruler Atawallpa, and the final years of the rebellious, neo-Inca state in the tropical forest of Vilcabamba. Richly illustrated and written by leading experts, The Incas is the ideal introduction for the tourist, armchair traveller or student.

‘Elegant and deceptively simple … words and images are brought together into a lively conversation … the tragic grandeur of Gandhi’s life is palpable on every page’ Vinay Lal, University of California, Los Angeles

A champion of civil rights and a leading light in India’s struggle for independence, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an icon of the 20th century. The Mahatma was a man of extraordinary courage and vision, a born leader and a revolutionary, relentless in his pursuit of equality and justice. Gandhi is best remembered for continually challenging the injustices of British colonial rule through acts of non-violent civil disobedience. Willing to subject himself to prison for his beliefs, he was a complicated and sometimes controversial figure. A master of conflict resolution, he was adept at forging alliances with his fiercest critics, yet he could be uncompromising in his treatment of family members and followers. This intimate pictorial biography unpicks the nuances of Gandhi’s life and character, charting his evolution from fun-loving schoolboy to the man revered throughout India as ‘Father of the Nation’. Drawing on contemporary accounts and a myriad of letters, documents, illustrations and photographs – including many which have rarely, if ever, been published – it reveals a man of contradictions, a fascinating personality whose complexities are often obscured by the scale of his achievements, yet who remains a continuing source of inspiration to those struggling for freedom all over the world.

Giza and the Pyramids Mark Lehner and Zahi Hawass For more than 4,000 years the pyramids of Giza have stood like giant question marks that have intrigued and endlessly fascinated people. Who exactly built them? When? Why? And how did they create these colossal structures? But the pyramids are not a complete mystery – the stones, the hieroglyphs, the landscape and even the layers of sand and debris hold stories for us to read. Mark Lehner and Zahi Hawass, with over four decades of involvement with Giza, provide their unique and personal insight into the site, bringing together all the information to create a record unparalleled in its detail and scope. We may think of the pyramids as rising from the desert, isolated and enigmatic, yet they were surrounded by temples, tombs, vast cemeteries and even teeming towns of the living. All are described in detail here and brought back to life, with hundreds of illustrations including detailed photographs of the monuments, excavations and objects, as well as plans, reconstructions and the latest images from remote-controlled cameras and laser scans. The art and architecture of Egypt during the age of the pharaohs continue to capture the imagination of the modern world. Vivid, graceful forms decorating monuments that emanated ambition and authority spark our wonder about this distant culture. Ever youthful and elegant men and women encounter odd, animal-headed gods and monsters amid scenes of work and leisure, in a paradise of plain, bright colours, where hieroglyphic texts hint at grand ideas. The tombs and temples of ancient Egypt seem to reveal how art and monumental building first flowered at the heart of civilization, and the many ways in which they may adorn and articulate the human condition, and our relationships with the eternal and our time on earth. Bill Manley’s account of the art of ancient Egypt draws on the finest works of a uniquely successful and enduringly compelling civilization through more than 3,000 years, including celebrated masterpieces, from the Narmer palette to Tutankhamun’s gold mask, as well as their contexts of origin in the tombs, temples and palaces of the pharaohs and their citizens.

With a global perspective that covers over four million years of history, this accessible volume provides a chronological account of both the development of the human race and the order in which modern societies have made discoveries about their ancient past. Beginning deep in prehistory, it takes in all the great archaeological sites of the world as it advances to the present day. A masterful combination of succinct analysis and driving narrative, Archaeology: The Whole Story also addresses the questions that inevitably arise as we gradually learn more about the history of our species: what are we? Where did we come from? What inspired us to start building, writing and all the other activities that we traditionally regard as exclusively human? A concluding section explains how we know what we know: for example, how seventeen prehistoric shrines were discovered around Stonehenge using magnetometers, ground-penetrating radars, and 3D laser scanners; and how DNA analysis enabled us to identify some bones discovered beneath a car park in Leicester as the remains of a fifteenth-century king of England. Written by an international team of archaeological experts and richly illustrated throughout, Archaeology: The Whole Story offers an unparalleled insight into the origins of humankind.

Joseph Banks’ Florilegium Botanical Treasures from Cook’s First Voyage Mel Gooding • David Mabberley • Joe Studholme 108

Joseph Banks accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage round the world from 1768 to 1771. A gifted and wealthy young naturalist, Banks collected exotic flora from Madeira, Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Java, bringing back over 1,300 species that had never been seen or studied by Europeans. On his return, Banks commissioned over 700 superlative engravings. Known collectively as Banks’ Florilegium, they are some of the most precise and exquisite examples of botanical illustration ever created. The Florilegium was never published in Banks’ lifetime, and it was not until 1990 that a complete set in colour was issued in a boxed edition (limited to 100 copies) under the direction of the British Museum (Natural History). It is from these prints that the present selection is made by Professor David Mabberley, accompanied by expert botanical commentaries, with additional texts by art historian Mel Gooding, setting the works in context as a perfect conjunction of nature, science and art. An afterword by Joe Studholme describes the history of the modern printing. Banks’ Florilegium is not only a great scientific record, but also a major achievement of collaborative Enlightenment art, and a work of botanical illustration of oustanding beauty.

Voices East London connects the dots around the creative perspectives that make the area unique while providing colourful glimpses into its past by means of dynamic interviews with eighty of the area’s leading movers and shakers. Among them are such artists, designers and cultural leaders as Gilbert & George, Sue Webster, Langlands & Bell, Charles Saumarez Smith, Iwona Blazwick, Maureen Paley, Lemn Sissay, Sandra Esquilant, David Waddington and Pablo Flack. Brimming with striking new photography and engaging insights into a distinctive milieu, Voices East London demonstrates that the area has well and truly moved beyond its old Dickensian aura.

Spices have played an intrinsic part in the human story, running through history, geography, anthropology, politics, religion, culture, art and design. From alligator pepper seeds, which in the Yoruba culture are given to newborn babies to taste a few minutes after birth, to charoli seeds, which are used in traditional Indian sweets eaten during the festival of Holi, and caraway seeds, which were added to medieval love potions, each spice has its own significance in the lives of the people who use it. The story of spice is really the stories of human relationships, from growers and traders to cooks and explorers, all starting with a tiny seed. The Grammar of Spice is one of the world’s missing books. It will change the way we understand spices and the role they play in defining not only our food but also our place in the world. The essence of each spice is explored in a brief history peppered with lively anecdotes and tips, and accompanied by reproductions of surface decoration from Owen Jones’s The Grammar of Ornament, which brought the exoticism and excitement of faraway lands to Europeans when it was first published in 1856. Brought together in a delicious package, this beautiful book opens up an incredible new world of flavour and associations.

A Coloring Book: Drawings by Andy Warhol Compact and Expanded Edition Foreword by Teddy and Arthur Edelman 114

It was 1953 when, not long after arriving in New York City, a young artist named Andy Warhol had begun to make his way in the world of commercial illustration. As Arthur Edelman, his former employer, relates in his introductory note, ‘In a hallway of the Empire State Building, outside a shoe manufacturer’s office, stood a young man with Jackson Pollock shoes, a rumpled black suit, a portfolio and a shock of white hair.’ Over the next decade, Warhol created scores of whimsical advertisements for the Edelmans, including a colouring book that could only have come from the mind of Warhol, created especially for clients’ children for Christmas in 1961, and somewhat of a cause célèbre when it was published in 1990. The original edition was only 24pp, but Warhol actually created many more drawings through the mid/late 1950s and early 1960s; this revised edition is extended with many more of these images. A Coloring Book: Drawings by Andy Warhol will amuse a new audience with its delightfully carefree menagerie and mid-century charm.
