David Dawson and Martin Gayford

Love Lucian brings together Freud’s early letters for the first time. Gathered from both private collections and public archives, including the Freud Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate, many of them have never been published before – and they are a revelation. Whether addressed to family, friends, lovers, confidants or benefactors, they are full of verbal and visual wit, affection and irreverence. Ranging from schoolboy letters to his parents through to his early recognition as a professional artist, the letters reveal not only his earliest artistic inclinations – many feature drawings and characterful visual quirks – but the multiple facets of his complex personality.

Love Lucian The Letters of Lucian 1939–1954Freud

Published in Lucian Freud’s centenary year, this collection of the young artist’s letters reveals the foundations of Freud’s personality and creative practice

Since his death in 2011, Lucian Freud’s reputation as one of the greatest painters of the 20th century has continued to grow. Much has been written about his talent, his brilliance and his complicated personal life, but until now, his own voice has not often been heard above the noise.

Reproduced in facsimile alongside Freud’s paintings of this period, and linked by a narrative that weaves them into the story of his often complicated life and relationships, including his first marriage and separation, they provide an intimate and fresh perspective on the first three decades of the artist’s life.

The first book dedicated to Picasso’s self-portraits, many held in private collections and published here for the first time

Pascal Bonafoux is a French writer, novelist, art critic and art historian, specializing in self-portraiture. He is the author of many books, including Rodin & Eros, also published by Thames & Hudson. 170 £30.00OctoberISBN224pp25.5illustrationsx19.0cm9780500025833

At the suggestion of Picasso’s widow Jacqueline, the distinguished art historian Pascal Bonafoux began researching Picasso’s self-portraits more than forty years ago. This meticulously researched book presents the fruits of his decades-long project. From the first attributed painting in 1894 as a thirteen-year-old boy, until Picasso's final self-portrait in 1972, a year before his death, Bonafoux charts the evolution of the artist's life and art. Here is Picasso as a student; as a young bohemian; an impetuous artist in Paris; as harlequin; as lover, husband and father; and finally, as an old man confronting his mortality. The book comprises about 170 drawings, paintings and photographs, some from private collections and previously unpublished, bringing together for the first time the attributed self-portraits of this genius of 20th-century art.

Much has been said and written about Picasso’s life and art, but until now his self-portraits have never been studied and presented in a single book, perhaps because the artist always left many doubts about his work. However, there is no doubt that Picasso represented himself ceaselessly, whether in a dashed-off pencil sketch, as a flourish at the bottom of a letter, or on a giant canvas.

‘Open any letter here and it compels – such is the force, honesty and lucidity of Van Gogh’s literary expressiveness ... the perfect condensed version of the complete correspondence’ Jackie Wullschläger, Financial Times

Here we can observe Van Gogh’s thoughts and opinions at first hand, as well as his close ties with his brother Theo, his sometimes troubled relationships with friends and fellow artists, his personal doubts and fears, and above all his overriding passion for his art. This is not only an immense treasure trove of biographical and arthistorical information, it provides a lasting pleasure as a personal written testimony to a life consecrated to art.

‘Impassioned, often heartbreaking, furious, funny and tender, these letters form a unique testament from a pivotal figure in 19th-century art’ John Banville, Irish Independent

Van Gogh is the most famous artist in the world, yet our understanding of his life is full of contradictions. Art historians, filmmakers, journalists, psychologists and conspiracy theorists have offered theories on his life and work, yet their views are often poles apart. Van Gogh has been described as a suffering genius, a madman, the embodiment of peace and compassion, a man of violence who was a danger to himself and others, a religious fanatic and a Marxist. Where does the truth lie and the myth begin?

Fact or fiction?

Facts counterfactsand about the world’s most famous artist

Alan Turnbull

This book examines the continual rewriting of Van Gogh’s story since the first publications on the artist appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. Presenting a collage of succinct facts and ‘counterfacts’, the text is drawn from a wide field of sources: fellow artists, friends and family, doctors and psychoanalysts, actors and writers, theorists, crackpots and scholars. Conflicting statements go hand in hand with an unconventional curation of images, which include postcards of locations associated with the artist, photographs of a fraudster’s legal trial, a children’s toy, a bottle label and a rusty revolver.

An imaginative collection of statements about Vincent van Gogh that challenges what we think we know about the artist’s much existencemythologized

Alan Turnbull is a practising artist who lectured in painting and printmaking at Newcastle University and numerous art schools. He grew up in a mining village in north-east England where books in the home were few and far between. Aged fifteen, he came across a book on Van Gogh by accident in the school art room and borrowed it (without permission). He’s been reading about Van Gogh and looking at his pictures ever since.

Turnbull presents a kaleidoscope of fact and fiction – sometimes funny, sometimes heartrending, always revealing – giving readers new insights into the artist, his work and his legacy. Van Gogh himself would be amazed not only to see what people have said about him, but also to grasp the global phenomenon that he has become. A musthave for art lovers and museum-goers, this book invites all readers familiar with Van Gogh to challenge long-accepted ideas about the man and his work.

If These Apples Should Fall looks back on Cézanne from a moment – our own – when such judgments may seem to need justifying. What was it, the book asks, that held Cézanne’s viewers spellbound? At the heart of Cézanne lies a sense of disquiet: a homelessness haunting the vividness, an anxiety underlying the appeal of colour.

If These Apples Should Fall

For more than a century the art of Paul Cézanne was held to hold the key to modernity. His painting was a touchstone for Samuel Beckett as much as Henri Matisse. Rainer Maria Rilke revered him deeply, as did Pablo Picasso. If we lost touch with his sense of life, they thought, we lost an essential element in our self-understanding.

Publication coincides with a major Cézanne exhibition at Tate Modern, London, from 5 October 2022 – 12 March 2023.

Cézanne and the Present

T. J. Clark addresses the sense of the uncanny in Cézanne’s art head-on, and in the process also examines the work of Pissarro and Matisse in relation to his art, as he guides the reader over five concise and perfectly written chapters to come to terms with the strangeness, as well as the beauty, of Cézanne’s achievement.

Paula Modersohn-Becker is today hailed as one of the great pioneers of modernism. When she died in 1907 at the age of just 31, she had completed more than 700 paintings and 1,000 drawings and prints. Despite selling only a few paintings during her lifetime, her distinct style, daring subject matter and perseverance in overcoming barriers to women left a significant artistic mark on the brief epoch between the old and the new, and paved the way for the German avant-garde.

Uwe M. Schneede, one of the foremost experts on Modersohn-Becker’s work, shows how the artist translated her life’s experiences into her own, very distinctive, pictorial language. He focuses in particular on her time in Paris, where she absorbed the luminous palette and expressive brushwork of the French avantgarde, and which so strongly impacted her ambitions and artistic trajectory. Schneede’s lively narrative is supported by some 120 illustrations, and peppered throughout with quotations from Modersohn’s letters and diaries.

Richard Smith Artworks 1956 2016

The Estate of Francis Bacon Publishing, in association with Thames & Hudson

The first monograph on Richard Smith, a key figure in the development of British art

Richard Smith (1931–2016) was one of the most original painters of his generation, and one of the most underrated. As Barbara Rose said of Smith’s major Tate Gallery retrospective in 1975, he was ‘at once in and out of touch with the currents of the mainstream … au courant and aloof at the same time.’ That he latterly slipped under the radar to some extent is partly explained by his detachment from the mainstream as well as by his frequent switching of studios between England and the USA, although this helped charge his creative batteries. He is the only artist of his stature who has not been represented by a monograph, which the dazzling presentation of images in Richard Smith: Artworks now fulfils. It has been produced with the generous collaboration of the Richard Smith Foundation.

Art12

Produced in collaboration with the Richard Smith Foundation

As a Senior Curator at Tate, Dr Chris Stephens knew Smith well, and he contributes a wide-ranging introduction to Smith’s art and life. Prof David Alan Mellor investigates and explains the Anglo-American cultural contexts that drove Smith’s art, while Alex Massouras’s two themed essays, ‘Young and British’ and ‘From Motion Pictures to Flight’, explore Smith’s originality from fresh perspectives. The book is completed with an Afterword by its editor, Martin Harrison.

Richard Smith: Artworks traces Smith’s entire career, from the breakthrough lyrical abstraction of the early Pop-inflected paintings, through the radical shaped canvases and three-dimensional works that he produced in the 1960s, to the ‘Kite’ works beginning in 1972 and, eventually, his return to the flat canvas.

Michael Bird

At the heart of this original book are the successive waves of displacement caused by global wars and persecution that brought fresh ideas and new points of view to the British Isles, educational reforms that opened new routes for young people from working-class backgrounds, and movements of social change that enabled the emergence of female artists and artists of colour, as well as the development of the mass media that shaped modern modes of communication and culture. These are the ebbs and flows that Michael Bird illuminates in this panoramic yet highly readable account of Britain and its artists in a century of seismic change.

The story of 20th-century Britain, viewed through the lens of artists’ lives

In This is Tomorrow Michael Bird takes a fresh look at the ‘long 20th century’, from the closing years of Queen Victoria’s reign to the turn of the millennium, through the lens of the artists who lived and worked in this ever-changing Britain. Bird explores how the rhythms of change and adaptation, in both art and life, became embedded in the collective consciousness of the nation. He vividly evokes the personalities who populate and drive this story, looking beyond individual careers and historical moments to weave together interconnecting currents that flowed through London, Glasgow, Leeds, Cornwall, the Caribbean, New York, Moscow and Berlin. From the American James McNeill Whistler’s defence of his new kind of modern art against the British art establishment in the late 19th century to groundbreaking young artists on the cusp of the 21st century, like Rachel Whiteread and Mona Hatoum, he traverses the lives of the artists who have reflected, questioned and defined our times.

The Story of Scottish Art

The Story of Scottish Art is beautifully illustrated with the diverse artworks that form Scotland’s long tradition of bold creativity: Pictish carved stones and Celtic metalwork; Renaissance palaces and chapels; paintings of Scottish life and landscapes by Horatio McCulloch, David Wilkie and Joan Eardley; designs by master architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh; and collage and sculpture by Pop Art pioneer Eduardo Paolozzi. Lachlan tells the compelling story of how and why these and many other Scottish masterpieces were created, and the impact they have had on the world.

This is the story of how Scotland has defined itself through its art over the past 5000 years, from the earliest enigmatic Neolithic symbols etched onto the landscape of Kilmartin Glen to Glasgow’s fame as a centre of artistic innovation today. Lachlan Goudie brings his perspective and passion as a practising artist and broadcaster to narrate the joys and struggles of artists across the millennia striving to fulfil their vision and the dramatic transformations of Scottish society reflected in their art.

In the Eye of the Storm: Modernism in Ukraine, 1900–1930s presents the ground-breaking art produced in Ukraine in the early 20th century, focusing on the three key cultural centres of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa. Against a complicated socio-political backdrop of collapsing empires, World War I, the revolutions of 1917 with the ensuing Ukrainian War of Independence, and the eventual creation of Soviet Ukraine, several strands of distinctly Ukrainian art emerged. While émigrés such as Sonia Delaunay and Alexander Archipenko found fame outside their homeland, the followers of Mykhailo Boichuk focused on Byzantine revivalism, and the artists of the Kultur Lige sought to promote the development of contemporary Yiddish culture. The first avant-garde exhibitions in Ukraine featured the radical art of Davyd Burliuk and Alexandra Exter, and the dynamic canvases of the Kyiv-based Cubo-Futurist Oleksandr Bohomazov. In Kharkiv, Vasyl Yermilov championed the industrial art of Constructivism, while Vadym Meller, Anatol Petrytskyi, Oleksandr Khvostenko-Khvostov and Borys Kosarev revolutionized theatre design. The attempt to build a national identity in Ukraine resulted in a polyphony of styles and artistic developments across a full range of media – from oil paintings, sketches and sculpture to collages, cinema posters and theatre designs.

Tracing a history that extends far beyond the bohemian, romantic and renaissance cults of the artist, each chapter focuses on key developments of the studio space as seen in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar images. Mythical and divine makers, and some amateurs, are included, and so too are craftspeople – workers in metal and wood, potters, illuminators, weavers, embroiderers and architects to name a few. Each carefully chosen example is placed within a cultural and political context, with the aim of correcting the historical imbalance that has long overlooked the many artisans who collaborated with artists. Leading authority James Hall also extends the discussion to the artist’s museum and the artist’s house, as well plein air painting and the development of portable studios.

The artist’s workplace has always been an imaginary as well as an actual location, an idealized utopia as well as the domain of dirty, back-breaking work. Written descriptions, paintings, prints and even photographs of the artist’s atelier distort as much as they document. This pioneering cultural history charts the myth and reality of the creative space from Ancient Greece to the present day.

Highly acclaimed on first publication, and now revised and updated with a new introduction, full-colour illustrations and a freshly written concluding chapter, this revelatory book explores cross-cultural art through the lens of settler societies such as Australia and New Zealand, where Europeans made new nations, displacing but never eclipsing Native peoples. In this dynamic of dispossession and resistance, settler artists and designers have drawn upon Indigenous motifs and styles in their search for distinctive identities, while powerful Indigenous art traditions have asserted the presence of First Nations peoples and their claims to place, history and sovereignty. Cultural exchange is a two-way process, and an unpredictable one: contemporary Indigenous art draws on global contemporary practice, but moves beyond a bland affirmation of hybrid identities to uphold the enduring values and attachment to place of Indigenous peoples.

For anyone with an interest in the current debates about decolonization, Indigenous culture and the history of art, this is essential reading.

The arts of Africa, Oceania and Native America famously inspired 20th-century modernist artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Ernst. The politics of such stimulus, however, have long been highly contentious: was this a crosscultural discovery to be celebrated, or just one more example of Western colonial appropriation?

Women in Design

A history of women designers and consumers from 1900 to today

Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) was one of the towering figures of western painting and Baroque art, a technical master renowned for his focus on realism and startling veracity. Everything he painted was ‘treated’ as a portrait, from Spanish royalty and Pope Innocent X, to a mortar and pestle. This comprehensive introduction to Velázquez’s life and art includes a discussion of all his major works, and illustrates most of Velázquez’s surviving output of approximately 110 paintings. The artist’s greatest innovation – his unorthodox and revolutionary technique is explored in relation to the styles of certain of his most celebrated contemporaries both in Spain and beyond, including Titian and Rubens. The book concludes with a final chapter on the influence and importance of Velázquez’s art on later painters from the time of his own death to the art of recent times including Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon and the Impressionists.

The story of the nude in art in our times, described by the Daily Telegraph as ‘a fascinating, often humorous overview of our obsession with the naked body’

The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless – its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection.

Frances Borzello New in Updatedpaperbackedition

‘Borzello brilliantly updates the evasively genteel distinction between naked and nude made by Kenneth Clark in 1956 ... here we find art holding a mirror up to our troublesome human nature’ Observer

In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clark’s classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with today’s depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Borzello explores the role of the nude in 20th- and 21st-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists, and complementing her text with a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. This edition has been updated to reflect radical developments in art and culture over the last decade, focusing in particular on artworks by women, trans artists and artists of colour. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time.

Frances Borzello is an art historian and the author of several books, including A World of Our Own: Women as Artists, Seeing Ourselves: Women’s Self-Portraits and At Home: The Domestic Interior in Art, all published by Thames & Hudson. 130 £20.00AugustISBN224pp22.9illustrationsx15.2cmpaperback9780500296677

In this visual tour through art history, Matthew Wilson pieces together a global visual language enshrined in art: the language of symbols. From national emblems to corporate logos and emojis, our day-to-day lives abound with icons with roots in the distant past. Wilson traces the often surprising trajectories that symbols have taken through history, identifying the common themes and ideas that link seemingly disparate cultures. Thus we meet the falcon as a symbol of authority from the ancient Egyptian pharaohs to the medieval aristocracy; the dog as stalwart companion from the classical era to the Renaissance; and the mythical phoenix as a symbol of female power connecting a queen in England with a goddess in China. We also see moments of radical reinterpretation and change: the transformation of the swastika from an auspicious symbol of hope to one of hate.

An appreciation of the life and art of Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomin books, which are adored by children and adults across the globe

Tove Jansson

Tove Jansson (1914–2001) was one of the most original, influential and perennially enjoyed illustrators of the 20th century. Her popularity remains undimmed in the 21st century: she was the subject of a recent biopic, Tove, and a 3D animated version of her much-loved Moomin stories, Moominvalley, has been broadcast on Sky since 2019. This book provides fresh insights and a deeper appreciation of her extraordinary life and art, offering an in-depth analysis of her process, influences, styles and subjects as they changed over time. It charts her beginnings as a cartoonist for the satirical magazine Garm, responding to the Second World War and its aftermath as she developed from art student to painter and muralist, bohemian and lesbian. It also explores the emergence of her Moomin world, which appeared in her first children’s book in 1945 and then in the London Evening News, the world’s biggest-selling evening paper. This body of work is one of her great achievements, expanding her stories, settings and cast and invigorating her drawing and writing. Her interpretations of such classics as Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Hunting of the Snark, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit are also examined in detail, and her many novels are documented here along with personal commentaries from her own writings.

This book, however, was not another short novella but a substantial twelve-chapter novel, the template for a further seven to come. The Unseen Saul Leiter

Now widely acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923–2013) remained relatively unsung until he was rediscovered by curators and critics in his early 80s. Leiter pioneered a painterly approach to colour photography starting in the late 1940s, his images evoking the flow and rhythm of life on the mid-century streets of New York in luminous colour at a time when his contemporaries were shooting in black and white. He produced covers for fashion magazines such as Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar before largely withdrawing from public attention in the 1980s. The publication in 2006 of his first monograph, Early Color, inspired an avid rediscovery of Leiter’s work by contemporary audiences. His studio in New York’s East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation. The Foundation has begun a full-scale survey and organization of his more than 80,000 works, with the aim of compiling the ‘complete’ archive. This volume presents works discovered through this process, specifically colour slides, which have neither been published nor seen by the public. Meticulously curated by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo of the Saul Leiter Foundation and supported by texts that explain how Leiter built the slide archive and how it is now being explored, catalogued and restored, this monograph will be a musthave for photography fans worldwide.

Born in New York in 1926, she worked as a nanny in New York and Chicago for much of her adult life. It was during her years as a nanny that she took many of the photographs that have made her posthumously famous. Maier’s incredible body of work consists of more than 150,000 photographic images, Super 8 and 16 mm films, various recordings and a multitude of undeveloped films. Working primarily as a street photographer, Maier’s work has been compared with such luminaries as Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Joel Meyerowitz. Drawing on previously unpublished archives and recent scientific analyses, this retrospective sheds new light on Maier’s work. With texts by Anne Morin and Christa Blümlinger, this thorough look at Maier’s entire archive is organized thematically in sections that cover self-portraits, the street, portraits, gestures, cinematography, children, colour work and forms.Avaluable addition to the continuing assessment of Maier’s work, this book is a one-volume compendium of her most enduring images.

Calle’s work is also renowned for its use of personal narrative, for example in her projects Exquisite Pain and Take Care of Yourself, which combine images and text to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. Calle has exhibited across the world, with major solo exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou and a retrospective at Whitechapel Gallery, London. Alex Prager is a photographer and filmmaker whose elaborate sets and complex staging draw on a rich cultural heritage of cinematic style, informed by street photography, to produce work that is unerringly memorable. At once temporal and timeless, bright but shadowed, Prager’s images exist within a hyperreal world, deeply rooted in the eerie undertones of Los Angeles, where the line between reality and fiction is blurred.

The definitive monograph on Alex Prager, one of the truly original image makers of our time

Prager’s critically acclaimed work is introduced here, spanning a decade of photographic work and five films. This collection of carefully curated photographs is complemented by an in-depth interview by Nathalie Herschdorfer, director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle, Switzerland, and discursive essays by Michael Govan, director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Michael Mansfield, executive director of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Maine, and Clare Grafik, senior curator at The Photographers’ Gallery, London.

After Dark Liam Wong

In this evocative study of cities after midnight, Wong documents how people and places – a single window illuminated in a block of flats, the false warmth in the window display of a closed shop – are altered when darkness falls. Through sleepless and solitary nights, he captures urban interstices between dusk and dawn: the eerie emptiness of London’s Piccadilly Circus at 4.00am; Seoul’s late-night taxi drivers moving along hushed roads; birds sharing the warmth of a neon sign in Hong Kong’s TSM District – mysterious silhouettes representing lives lived in shadow, portrayed as intricate cinematic visions, all before the sun rises.

After Dark weaves slivers of life, delicate and covert threads, into an insomniac’s journey through the solitude and uncertainty of the night.

The couturière Elsa Schiaparelli (1890–1973) was a key figure in Paris fashion between the two World Wars. Following in the footsteps of her mentor Paul Poiret, she designed her first knitwear collection in January 1927. Decorated with trompe-l’œil motifs in black and white, her sweaters were an immediate success in both France and the USA. In 1935, the Maison Schiaparelli opened in the Place Vendôme in Paris, selling collections designed for sports, city and evening wear.

Like her arch-rival Gabrielle Chanel, Schiaparelli also worked closely with artists, including Man Ray, Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dalí, with whom she created a lobster dress. Taking a cue from Surrealism, her creations were hugely imaginative and made use of innovative new materials. The ‘Schiap’ style continued to develop through the 1930s. Her most famous collections had themes including the circus (summer 1938) and astrology (winter 1938–39). In 1937, Schiaparelli launched the fragrance Shocking, named after shocking pink, which had become her signatureAlongsidecolour.vintage photographs, sketches and contemporary features from Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, this volume presents specially photographed masterpieces from the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. From the high-minded moralists of the 19th century to the radical thinkers of modernism – and from the emergence of showmen such as Raymond Loewy in the 1930s to today’s superstars such as Philippe Starck – the book provides in-depth coverage of a subject that touches all our lives. Iconic works that mark significant steps forward or that characterize a particular era or approach –such as Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair of 1925, Eliot Noyes’ corporate identity work for IBM in the 1950s and Matthew Carter’s Verdana typeface, designed to be read on screen – are analysed in detail, while the text sets out the framework of ideas, intent and technology within which differing approaches to design have evolved.

From the cars we drive and the products we buy to the graphics that surround us, we are all consumers of design. Design: The Whole Story provides all the information needed to decode the material world.

Design: The Whole Story takes a close look at the key developments, movements and practitioners of design around the world, from the beginnings of industrial manufacturing to the present day. Graphic design guru Steven Heller says, ‘Rudy de Harak is a solid link between American and Swiss modernism. He was an exemplar of minimalist form with a conceptual content. A book on his life and work is sorely needed and long overdue.’

Who were the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece and Rome? What did they mean to the people who worshipped them? Although their time of widespread worship has long passed, the Greek and Roman gods have fascinated and inspired writers and artists for millennia. From Aphrodite to Apollo, Poseidon to Zeus, here are some of the most recognizable characters in Western culture, yet there is a much richer past behind famous paintings of the birth of Aphrodite or the bold iconography of Zeus and his thunderbolts.TheGreek and Roman gods are enthralling characters in the enduringly powerful Iliad, Odyssey and Metamorphoses. They are immortal and powerful yet also vain, vindictive and vulnerable. Moreover, as manifestations of death, fertility, love and war, the gods are also our key to understanding how the Greeks and Romans saw their world. Philip Matyszak presents this pantheon in all its glory, guiding us from Mount Olympus to the depths of Hades. Each chapter focuses on an individual deity, beginning with their ‘biography’ and exploring the origins of the legends. Matyszak mixes history with vivid retellings of the myths in which the gods have a starring role, from stories of cosmic creation and universal war to disastrous weddings and freak discus accidents. This elegant, illustrated guide to the gods of Greece and Rome is a must-have for anyone interested in mythology and classical civilization.

Philip Matyszak has a doctorate in Roman history from St John’s College, Oxford. This account charts Champollion’s dramatic life and achievements: by turns a teenage professor, a supporter of Napoleon, an exile, a fanatical decipherer and a curator at the Louvre, he lived life to the full but drove himself into an early grave. Andrew Robinson’s full-blooded account brings the man, his setbacks and his ultimate triumphs vividly to life.

The Discovery100TutankhamunCompleteYearsof

In this new edition of his landmark book, Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves revisits Tutankhamun in the context of his time, the excavators in the context of theirs, and every aspect, old and new, of the tomb’s discovery, archaeology, architecture and art. If what was discovered in 1922 had the ability to amaze, then what has been discovered since will simply astonish.

Nicholas Reeves is an Egyptologist specializing in Amarna and immediate postAmarna history and material culture. As an archaeologist he has worked extensively in the Valley of the Kings, and has held Curatorial positions at the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He is the author of several books, including Akhenaten: Egypt’s False Prophet and The Complete Valley of the Kings, both published by Thames & Hudson.

A classic bestseller, now fully updated and revised: the definitive guide to Tutankhamun and his tomb – what it contained, why, and what it means today

On 4 November 1922, Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter’s long search in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings drew to a triumphant close: Tutankhamun’s tomb had been found. As news of the discovery spread, and as images of the breathtaking treasures began to circulate, this onceobscure pharaoh would capture the imagination of the entire world.Ahundred years on, and both the fascination and the drama continue. Scientific research has pushed forward, and the results have been impressive: the tomb’s ground-plan and setting are now fully remapped; CT-scanning and aDNA have begun to shed their unique light on Tutankhamun in life and in death; super-accurate recordings have been secured of the Burial Chamber’s decorated walls; and we possess at last high-quality photography of Pharaoh’s possessions. Our access to Carnarvon and Carter’s extraordinary find is greater today than it has ever been, and from this fuller evidence comes one new realization among many – that both the tomb and its treasures had been intended for someone else.

‘A tour de force ... a superb account of 2,000 years of France and the French in the making by a master of his craft’ Robert Gildea

Artists, martyrs, kings, revolutionaries: France’s sense of national identity is inextricably linked to its dramatic history, which fascinates the world and attracts millions each year to visit its chateaux and cathedrals, boulevards and vineyards. Ancient roots allied to a social, political and military history that has witnessed revolution, conflict and occupation mean that France holds a unique position in the modern world. In this short, easy-to-digest history of a vast subject, Jeremy Black succinctly narrates how France’s past has created its distinct character. Country and destination, nation and idea, France has an incomparable cultural legacy, and exerts a powerful artistic, intellectual and political influence across the globe. Black’s vivid take on history emphasizes the unexpected nature of events and unpredictable outcomes on a fragmented country, from the prehistoric cave paintings of Lascaux to the origins of Gothic architecture, from Monet and Degas to the Lumière brothers, and from the cataclysm of the 1789 Revolution through the countercultural student protests of 1968 to today’s political uncertainty. Black’s concise, insightful tour of the key historical moments and vibrant personalities that shaped France provides an indispensable guide to understanding the country today.

Behind the fine robes, carpets and ceramics on display today in their great architectural monuments, Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia, lie centuries of migration, trade and struggle. Diana Darke reveals a radically new picture of the Ottoman Empire in this original and beautifully illustrated book.

Diana Darke is the author of Stealing from the Saracens: How Islamic Architecture Shaped Europe, which was one of BBC History Magazine’s best books of 2020 and chosen by William Dalrymple as his history book of the year. Her other books include The Merchant of Syria, My House in Damascus and The Last Sanctuary in Aleppo, as well as travel guides on Turkey and Syria.

A richly illustrated history of the Ottoman Empire, unravelling its complex cultural legacy and celebrating its positive impact on the world

While many still see in the Ottomans the decadence of Istanbul, harems and hookahs, they are unaware that the secrets of Ottoman success lay in a disciplined bureaucracy and a standing army that both awed and seduced its opponents. They harnessed the talents of their diverse populations and quickly buttressed the crumbling edifice of Byzantine Christianity. Their dynamism and resilience helped fuse the cultures of Asia, Europe and Africa, absorbing whatever impressed them, from Mongol armour to Persian tile work. Alongside their rigour and steel, they enjoyed the finer aspects of life, in music, cuisine and art, unafraid, even as rugged fighters, to display their love of flowers, especially the tulip and the rose, in ornamental gardens.

Who are we? How do scientists define Homo sapiens, and how does our species differ from the extinct hominins that came before us? This illuminating book explores how the latest scientific advances, especially in genetics, are revolutionizing our understanding of human evolution. Paul Pettitt reveals the extraordinary story of how our ancestors adapted to unforgiving and relentlessly changing climates, leading to remarkable innovations in art, technology and society that we are only now beginning to comprehend.Drawingon over twenty-five years of experience in the field, Paul Pettitt immerses readers in the caves and rockshelters that provide evidence of our African origins and dispersals to the far reaches of Eurasia, Australasia and ultimately the Americas. Popular accounts of the evolution of Homo sapiens emphasize biomolecular research, notably genetics, but this book also draws from the wealth of information from excavations and artefacts, including the author’s own investigations into the origins of art and how it evolved over its first 25,000 years. He focuses in particular on behaviour, using archaeological evidence to bring an intimate perspective on human lives as they were lived in the almost unimaginably distant past.

‘A detailed yet enjoyable read, and a timely stock-take of this pivotal point in the history of England. It is a story that could never before have been told as fully as it can now’ Cat Jarman

Unfolding like a great detective story, this account traces the movements of the Great Army across the country, piecing together a new picture of Viking Age England in unprecedented detail, from swords, coins, jewelry and the burials of great warriors to the everyday objects that ordinary farmers and artisans discarded. Drawing on the most up-to-date discoveries from the author’s recent research, this is the definitive story of a vital period in British history.

The definitive account of the notorious Viking Great Army that swept through Britain between ad 865 and 878

The oldest site in the collection was created nearly 6,000 years ago; the most recent in the first century ad. Arranged in roughly chronological order, the photographs are accompanied by explanatory text, with longer introductions illuminating the wider archaeological contexts of each era, from the Paleolithic to the arrival of the Romans in ad 43.

Photographs taken above the monuments, often at dawn or sunset, allow uniquely evocative views, showing not only how the sites fit into their surrounding landscapes, but also how they define or respond to the area’s natural character. Stone circles recall lost rituals and religious ceremonies; clusters of burial mounds resolve into beautiful rows aligned with others on the horizon; and Iron Age ramparts take on swirling forms that hint at long-forgotten battles.

This is an inspiring way to discover the Britain’s extraordinarily rich prehistory, from famous monuments such as Stonehenge and Avebury to lesser-known gems, all captured here in rare, fleeting light and at different times of the year.

This breathtaking collection of images reveals prehistoric sites from around the British Isles as they have never been seen before: Neolithic enclosures, tombs and stone circles; Bronze Age cairns, field systems and burial mounds; and Iron Age farmsteads and hillforts, all captured from the air.

The upper unit has a lift and wide doors for a wheelchair, while the lower one has an office and garden. The two units are separate but accessed by the same entrance, with the possibility of being joined in the future. ‘The position of the old doublehelix staircase makes it possible to stretch the multigenerational living concept further,’ says architect Auguste van Oppen. ‘Two studio apartments could be added on the north façade to allow children to live at home when they get older.’ By responding to needs across the generations, the design has made it possible for everyone to enjoy the benefits of living in an urban area, with access to work and cultural activities for all. TucsonDUST Mountain Retreat, 2012 Tucson, Arizona, USA Located in the Saguaro National Park, this mountain residence for a couple exists harmoniously within its unspoiled landscape. It was designed by the multidisciplinary design studio DUST, an alliance of architects, craftspeople, artists, designers and builders with practices rooted in the master/builder tradition, and serves as a particularly beautiful demonstration of the aesthetic applications of rammed earth on a large scale. The walls have a natural striated beauty and warmth that echoes the cacti and changing light conditions of the surrounding desert. The inclusion of a music studio also allows the couple to integrate live music into their daily lives. ‘We tend to look to the past for references, rather than to new product innovation,’ says architect Cade Hayes. ‘What can we learn from indigenous local builders, and those that came afterwards? We try to design all of our projects from this vantage point, common-sense design strategies that are rooted in place. This comes about with material selection, siting, orientation and harnessing all the free energy, heating and cooling we can.’

Structured by courtyard function, the book consists of five chapters – on privacy; multigenerational living; sightlines; light and ventilation; and living with nature – that are richly illustrated with photography as well as architectural illustrations showing courtyard positions within floor Showcasingplans.

Aesthetic influences drawn from China have long resonated throughout Western art, design and thought. China Adorned challenges the monolithic idea of ‘Chinese’ culture and fashion, turning the lens on the rich clothing traditions of the country’s ethnic-minority peoples.

Drawing on more than three decades of research by cultural anthropologist Professor Qiyao Deng, the book documents and demystifies the customs and rituals of more than thirty minority peoples through their clothing and accessories. Deng’s never-before-published archival photos sit alongside contemporary imagery by photographer Cat Vinton that showcases fabrics, jewelry and the surrounding landscapes, helping readers to better understand the deep connections between people, place, ritual and adornment. Contributor essays delve further into textiles and techniques, the role of the artisan and the extraordinary resilience of material cultures that face disappearance, offering a timely reminder of the importance of preserving these traditions for generations to come.

A field guide to foraging: how to identify, harvest, eat and use wild plants

There is food within three metres of your front door. Three generations ago, it was common practice all over the world to collect this wild food; knowledge of what, where and when to forage was a necessary part of daily life. We still had lived experience of harvesting wild food with our hands. But with the advent of supermarket culture, modern systems of food production and escalating urbanization, the knowledge associated with foraging has mostly been lost. Today, we want this knowledge back. From forest to seaside, riverbank to city street – even your own yard – there is wild food and medicine available to those who know what to look for. In the face of global challenges such as climate change, food security and pandemics, we seek to empower ourselves with the information and skills that bring self-reliance and equip us to care for our families and communities. Eat Weeds shows how you can engage with wild food sources, reconnect with the stories of our ancestors, and care for local ecologies while transforming your neighbourhood into an edible adventure.

The Future is Fungi is a complete introduction to this hidden kingdom. Exploring their past, present and potential future impact in four key areas – food, medicine, psychedelics and mental health, and environmental remediation – this book not only reveals how fungi have formed the foundations of modern life but how they might help shape our future.

The kingdom of fungi has survived all five major extinction events. They are the architects of the natural world, integral to all life. They sustain critical ecosystems, recycling nutrients and connecting plants across vast areas, and help to produce many staples of modern life, such as wine, chocolate, bread, detergent and penicillin. Today, in the face of urgent ecological, societal and spiritual crises, fungi are being engineered to grow meat alternatives, create new sources of medicine, produce sustainable biomaterials, remediate the environment and even expand our collective consciousness.

The Future is HowFungiFungi Feed Us, Heal Us, Free Us and Save Our World

A complete introduction to the hidden world of fungi

Rich with informative texts, awe-inspiring 3D digital art and tips on how to immerse yourself in the world of fungi, this is a manifesto for the future, an invitation into a deeper awareness of our relationship with the natural world, each other and ourselves.

a lifestyle photographer who has provided photography for more than seventy illustrated books, including Garden Love, also published by Thames & Hudson.

Focusing on plants destined for the dinner plate, The Kitchen Garden will teach you when to sow, what to grow and how to turn your delicious harvest into a meal. It features fifty-five plant profiles ranging from the everyday to unique. Each profile is illustrated and has an easy-to-comprehend table detailing the most important information: when to sow and harvest; growing time; space needed between plants; optimal soil pH; whether the plant will tolerate pots and frost; and their companions and dislikes.Aplanting chart summarizing the most useful information from the plant profiles is also included, along with guidance on the different climate zones and how best to start your kitchen garden. With an emphasis on seasons rather than months, the book is a beautiful and practical gift for a garden enthusiast.

A celebration of the beauty and charm of the kitchen dresser

Lucy Mora is an illustrator and garden lover. She has transformed her own ‘mow and blow’ garden into a glorious garden full of vegetables and perennials.

The kitchen dresser is having a renaissance. These beautiful pieces are overtaking clean-lined kitchens to create more original spaces, alive with personality and rich in history. Made from Welsh oak or elm, Tasmanian Huon pine or reclaimed timber, the humble dresser – originally built for food preparation and storage – has become the treasured centrepiece of many a home. The art of the dresser is often in the collection it holds: vintage china, Staffordshire figures, majolica, pewter, blue-and-white transfer ware, breadboards, family treasures, the old and the Simoneveryday.Griffithsis
