Stanisław Wyspiański (1869–1907) is widely regarded as Poland’s greatest artist, whose work is just beginning to be appreciated outside of Central Europe. ‘I have shown,’ wrote the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint, ‘that there is a connection between the plant world and the world of the soul.’ Her Nature Studies portfolio (1919–20), recently acquired by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, comprises 46 sheets of exquisitely rendered botanical drawings. Documenting each plant’s particular qualities along with Latin names, Swedish common names and dates of observation, af Klint follows the typical format of a botanical reference book, known as a Flora; however, hers is a Flora of the spirit, a mapping of the natural world in spiritual terms that would stand alongside any scientific resource. Carefully drawn and vividly coloured plants, flowers and lichen are juxtaposed with geometric forms: a blooming sunflower is echoed by three nested circles, a central dot, a solid red line, a ring of points; a white narcissus is set against a pinwheel of softened primary hues; a cluster of budding branches is accompanied by checkerboard boxes of dots and stroke.

Hilma af Klint’s Nature Studies portfolio, dated 1919–20, has been virtually unknown until now. Envisioned by af Klint as a botanical atlas and rendered in pencil and jewel-toned watercolors, the 46 drawings detail the plants of Sweden's lower peninsula, alongside the abstract diagrams she developed to express the interconnectedness of the natural and spiritual realms. Inspired by scientific breakthroughs that proved the existence of things we cannot see – atoms, X-rays, soundwaves and the like – af Klint used drawing as a method of investigation. Linder first emerged in the late 1970s as a prominent figure within the dynamic landscapes of punk and postpunk music; her photomontage on the cover of Buzzcocks’ single ‘Orgasm Addict’ in 1977 became an iconic image of the punk scene. Following her punk period, Linder went on to become an internationally recognised artist renowned for her multifaceted practice. Memories as a continuous flow runs through Nara’s work. Hiroshige: artist of the open road

Hiroshige was one of Japan’s most talented, prolific and popular artists. Famed for his landscapes, he was also a great observer of nature with a visionary approach to colour and brushwork. His legacy continues to influence and inspire artists today.
Over a career spanning four decades, the prolific Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) produced thousands of landscape and nature prints, hundreds of paintings commissioned by the samurai elite, as well as many illustrated books. His work appealed to every stratum of society. While some of his landscape prints, such as EveningSnow–Kanbara and Ohashi–EveningRain, are well-known examples of Japanese art, the full range of his output is less familiar.
Hiroshige came from a samurai family, but he crossed social boundaries and devoted himself to depicting popular customs and the world around him. His work is distinguished by an air of gentle grace and decorum, perhaps arising partly from his steady temperament. His calm artistic vision sustained his contemporaries through the uncertainties of daily life and changing times. A great colourist, he stands out for discovering a subtle lyricism in the experience of travel, and a bond between people and the natural world.

Exported beyond the Indian subcontinent in antiquity, these three major religions – Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism –are living traditions and their devotional works of art impact the daily life of billions of people across the world.
This major new publication traces the development of religious imagery from around 100 bce, when it focused on the depiction of nature spirits, to 600 ce, by which time devotional images of Jain, Buddhist and Hindu deities and teachers had taken shape. Moving from symbolic to human form, such imagery employed attributes, divine attendants and animal vehicles that we still recognise today and are found across the global diaspora. Examples of these ancient images are found not only across South Asia, but also in Central and Southeast Asia, China and Japan – and they transformed the religious landscape of these regions too.
The authors explore fascinating topics such as the first devotional images of the twenty-four jinas (enlightened Jain teachers); the transformation from symbolic depictions of the Buddha to those that showed him in bodily form for the first time; and the formalisation of divine representations and devotional sculpture in Hindu traditions. This beautifully illustrated book reveals the ancient roots of the images and depictions of these world religions that many will find familiar today.

The Shakers are by far the longest-lived American utopian experiment. ‘Why don’t we fill our back garden with wildflowers and bees, and the people we meet over the garden wall – we’ll invite them in to be photographed by you.’ This is what my son Luke announced in the kitchen, midwinter, our back garden abandoned for at least ten years.
What came next was a pilgrimage: an ongoing act to cultivate a space grounded in love, a reverential offering to humanity. In a short window of time, we worked intensively to clear our long-neglected garden. We collected stories from the people we met over the garden wall while we worked, which soon came to feel like an intimate, confessional space. As the garden evolved it became an expression of joy, interconnectedness, yearning, sexuality, and defiance. The garden became a metaphor for the human heart itself.

Gideon Mendel: The Ward
Intimate and poignant photographs from the first dedicated HIV wards in London.
In 1993, Gideon Mendel spent a number of weeks photographing the Broderip and Charles Bell wards in Middlesex Hospital as part of the ‘Positive Lives’ project. All of the patients on the wards, many of whom were young, gay men, were having to face an early and painful death. These two wards at The Middlesex Hospital were some of the few dedicated AIDS wards that existed in London. Given the high levels of stigma and fear that existed at the time, the decision of these patients to allow themselves to be photographed was an act of considerable bravery. The Ward explores through Gideon Mendel’s evocative black-and-white photographs how it felt to live with HIV at a time when it was a veritable death sentence. It shows how the ward at the Middlesex Hospital became more like a second home, and the staff and patients friends.

The Ghanaian painter Amoako Boafo is considered one of the most important voices from a new generation of Black artists. Boafo portrays his friends, acquaintances and people from public life, presenting a contemporary image of Black self-empowerment and self-perception. After graduating from art college in Accra, Boafo began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2013, where he developed his signature style characterized by his unusual finger-painting technique. The people portrayed by Boafo embody the idea of Black identity that draws on its own culture, to be understood as an act of resistance against the racist labels of a predominantly white society. The artist’s intensive engagement with Black history is subtly reflected in his paintings that include motifs inspired by literary works by key pioneers of the Black Freedom Movement.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) was Finland’s most famous progressive artist around 1900 and a major figure in international modern art. At the turn of the century, Finland was a grand duchy striving for independence from Russian rule. Gallen-Kallela’s depictions of Finland’s people, myths, and nature played a key role in forming a national identity. At the same time, his modern visual language, developed in constant dialogue between Finnish sources of inspiration and influences from artistic centres such as Paris, Berlin, London and Vienna, brought him international acclaim. It now has around twenty people spread between Nice and Paris and operates in various cities in France and abroad. The projects on which NP2F works are both architectural and urban and its areas of expertise are sport, housing, cultural and educational buildings, places of relaxation and restoration, and public spaces.
The issue contains the most important works of the studio made to date, preceded by a pair of critical essays by the architect and professor Djamel Klouche and the Argentine architect Marcelo Faiden. A conversation with the Chilean architect Felipe De Ferrari complements the monograph.

Beginning in 1966, Per Kirkeby created more than 150 brick sculptures throughout his lifetime. Initially, Kirkeby was drawn to the essential qualities of bricks as a unit of architectural design and a symbol of human civilization – being the same size as the human hand. While Kirkeby was undoubtedly alluding to the simplicity and order of Minimalism at the time, the Danish artist was also looking beyond aesthetic purity to the pictorial and narrative possibilities of bricks.
Although Kirkeby is revered for his painting, his brick sculptures represent his most instantly recognisable work, in a material so familiar that it is almost invisible. At once ornamental, functional, architectural and purposeless, Kirkeby’s brick sculptures have become an iconic symbol of Danish modern art.
This is the second volume of a three-volume catalogue raisonné on the brick works, together offering a comprehensive overview of his output from 1966 until his death in 2018. This volume concentrates on Kirkeby’s unrealised brick sculptures, from 1983 to 2017. From smaller installations for exhibitions to private commissions and city planning projects, none of these sculptures were ever realised at their proposed site, and are presented to the public for the first time in this book. Contributions from the likes of Hans Ulrich Obrist and Robert Storr provide further context to these important works.

In approximately 1850, the later ‘father’ of French Impressionism, Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) met the Danish painter Fritz Melbye (1826–69) in Pissarro’s hometown on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, at that time a Danish colony. This book argues that Melbye is a ‘missing link’ between the Danish Golden Age and French Impressionism – and the now almost unknown Melbye thus had a significant influence on the beginning of Impressionism.
In 2017, the Ordrupgaard museum in Denmark held the exhibition Pissarro:AMeetingonSt.Thomason the occasion of the centenary of the sale of the Virgin Islands. This extended and revised book presents new research that the exhibition gave rise to.
Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark was Director of Ordrupgaard Museum from 1995 to 2003.

An exploration of rebellion and transformation, Deadweight features four large-scale sculptural works that reflect the artist’s deep connection with the sea and her enduring fascination with shipwrecks. Combining force and fragility, the sharp, angular structures evoke material forms – anchors, a ship’s hull, the carcass of an unknown mammal – which also act as symbols of defiance. The title ‘Deadweight’, originally a nautical term for a ship’s carrying capacity, is inverted by White to signify disruption instead of stability. It symbolises a breaking point, suggesting that freedom might be achieved through abolition.

Sáez looks at her subjects from a proximity that is as invasive as it is complicit. She wanted her photographs to be permeable to the intimacy of those portrayed. Sáez captures their vulnerability, in an agreed exchange between the photographer, the photographed and the future spectator during a moment of historical and social transition.

Crows Ascending is dedicated to the memory of Elliot’s younger brother Michael. Michael had a profound intellectual disability caused by lifelong epilepsy. He survived a severe case of Covid-19 in 2020 only to die of Parkinson’s-related pneumonia months later. It is also dedicated to the millions of others who have suffered or died in the United States – many due to government inaction – from Covid-19.
Elliot Ross’ work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of many institutions internationally, including the Bibliotheque Nationale de France.
