75 Years of thames & Hudson

a celebration of 75 years of publishing at thames & Hudson – a delight for bibliophiles, historians, art lovers and fans of the t&H brand.

In 1949 Walter and Eva Neurath founded Thames & Hudson with a clear aim: to make art and scholarship more accessible through independent publishing that was prepared to risk being ahead of the curve. Seventy-five years later, their original vision of creating a ‘museum without walls’ still resonates. As well as publishing beautifully designed and produced books in collaboration with the world’s leading artists, writers, museums, cultural institutions and fashion houses, T&H continues to evolve and innovate, remaining relevant and reflecting the times we live in.

The Art of the Book will be a valuable resource for those interested in the history of bookmaking and T&H’s impact over the years, and a must-have for collectors, enthusiasts and anyone with an appreciation for the art and evolution of publishing.

Marina abramovic: transforming energy (Crystal Series)

a monograph on Marina abramovic’s work with crystals, a part of her practice that is still underexplored

Marina Abramovic (1946) believes in the power of crystals to store the whole history of the earth and carry and transmit their energy. Thus, crystals are mainly linked to the Transitory Objects – a series of objects that the artist created to embody energy and trigger physical and mental experiences in the public through direct interaction, several installations, and exhibitions. Published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) Shanghai, the book tells the story of how Marina Abramovic discovered and explored the power of stones and crystals, at first, during her performance The Great Wall of China with Ulay, and later by visiting mines around Brazil.

The publication contains her personal theory on crystals and energy, with her drawings, pictures of her works, and other sources describing Abramovic’s vision of crystals and the “crystal meditation” her works aim to inspire. It also contains a spiritual guide and instruction cards to reboot your life, communicating with the reader and inspiring actions and meditations.

Essays shed new light on Picabia’s work in this period, from the hidden signs and symbols buried in his abstractions, to the new painting techniques he employed, to the mysterious and fantastical reappearance of the ‘dot’ in his work

Alexandre Lenoir is a French painter who graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2017. He paints lush, mysterious landscapes on a grand scale, with monumental canvases that straddle the line between figuration and abstraction. The artist works from personal photographs, which he reworks and projects onto his canvas. He masks parts of the canvas with tape, then builds up layers of paint on top, which eventually impregnate the canvas through and around the masking tape. It is when the tape is removed at the end of the process that the image is revealed.

Golden times?

Jochen Sander

During the 17th century, Amsterdam became one of the leading economic centres in Europe. The city and its population grew rapidly, trade and art flourished. The influential bourgeoisie shaped the fortunes of the city and confidently celebrated itself in magnificent group portraits by the city’s leading artists, first and foremost Rembrandt. And yet their good fortune had its price, for the roots of the city’s Golden Age lay in a colonialist trading policy and a rigid social order. This volume shows both sides of the coin, with images and stories of a plural society telling of wealth and inequality, good fortune and ruin, power and impotence.

Andrew Robinson incisively distils India’s many incarnations, from the remarkably advanced cities of the early Indus Valley to the world’s largest democracy. Anyone curious about its past, present or future will find this a fascinating introduction.
