Matisse in the Studio Ellen McBreen and Helen Burnham This book is the first in English to explore the essential role that Henri Matisse’s personal collection of objects played in his studio practice. Featured frequently in the modern master’s bold paintings, drawings and cut-outs, and influencing the development of his work in sculpture, Matisse’s objects formed a secret history hiding in plain sight. Works that span the artist’s entire career are presented here alongside the objects that inspired them, from Asian vases and African masks to intricate textiles from the Islamic world. Contributions by world-renowned Matisse experts Jack Flam and Claudine Grammont are rounded out with fresh insights by up-andcoming Matisse scholars Ellen McBreen and Helen Burnham, and additional perspectives by African art scholar Suzanne Preston Blier. With lush illustrations and archival images, Matisse in the Studio provides exceptional insights into the world of the artist at work. Ellen McBreen is Associate Professor of Art History at Wheaton College, Massachusetts. Helen Burnham is Pamela and Peter Voss Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Arbus Friedlander Winogrand New Documents, 1967 Sarah Hermanson Meister • Essay by Max Kozloff

£35.00 ISBN 978 0 870 709555 April 160pp 27.0 x 23.0 cm 125 illustrations

The Museum of Modern Art, New York

In 1967, The Museum of Modern Art presented New Documents, a landmark exhibition organized by John Szarkowski that brought together a selection of works by three photographers whose individual achievements signaled the artistic potential for the medium in the 1960s and beyond: Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand. Though largely unknown at the time, these three photographers are now universally acknowledged as artists of singular talent within the history of photography. The exhibition articulated a profound shift in the landscape of twentieth-century photography, and interest in the exhibition has only continued to expand. Yet, until now, there has been no publication that captures its content. Published in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the exhibition, Arbus Friedlander Winogrand features full-page reproductions of the 94 photographs included in the exhibition, along with Szarkowski’s original wall text, press release, installation views and an abundance of archival material. Sarah Hermanson Meister is a curator in the Department of Photography, The Museum of Modern Art. Max Kozloff is a New York-based writer and photographer.

Alibis: Sigmar Polke 1963–2010 Edited by Kathy Halbreich Published in conjunction with an exhibition at Tate Modern and The Museum of Modern Art, this richly illustrated publication provides an overview of Polke’s cross-disciplinary innovations and career. Four lead essays trace broad themes in Polke’s work across mediums and across his career, while twelve shorter texts each focus on a single work or aspect of Polke’s practice, which allows for a concentrated consideration of critical issues such as Polke’s use of language or textiles that have never been discussed before in any depth. A richly illustrated chronology presents a cultural frame for Polke’s work and an interview with Benjamin Buchloh offers insight on Polke’s first retrospective, held in 1976. The catalogue includes contributions by a wide range of authors with great expertise, most of whom have never published on Polke before, thus broadening the scope of scholarship on Polke and offering new thinking about this chameleon-like artist. Kathy Halbreich is the Associate Director at The Museum of Modern Art.

The Museum of Modern Art, New York

Charles White (1918–1979) was celebrated during his lifetime for depictions of African-American men, women, and children that acquired the name ‘images of dignity.’ White’s draftsmanship and his direct address of the social and political concerns of his time established him as a major artist with significant influence both on his contemporaries and on later generations. Beginning with White’s early days in Chicago during the 1930s, moving through his time in New York in the late 1940s and 1950s, and closing with his final decades as a revered figure in Los Angeles, Charles White: Black Pope examines key works from throughout the artist’s career, especially the late masterwork Black Pope (Sandwich Board Man), in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art. By creating visually compelling, ideologically complex works that engage audiences on many levels, White established himself as a key figure of his time, one whose work continues to resonate today. Esther Adler is Assistant Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Museum of Modern Art.

Louise Lawler: Receptions Edited by Roxana Marcoci This catalogue charts the creative practice of Louise Lawler, one of the most influential artists working in the fields of picture-making and institutional critique. Presenting Lawler’s multifaceted practice across mediums – photography, sound work, film, objects and mural-scale installations – this book offers new critical perspectives through eight essays by renowned scholars that unpack her tight, witty, thought-provoking work. The rich selection of plates comprehensively records the artist’s practice to date and underscores the radical inventiveness of Lawler’s practice. The performative nature of Lawler’s practice is mirrored in the design of the book’s dust jacket; when turned inside out, it features a signature Lawler picture as an ‘adjusted to fit’ poster. The book is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in late-20th and early-21st-century art Roxana Marcoci is Senior Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art.

Sonia Delaunay: Art Is Life Cara Manes Illustrations by Fatinha Ramos, with artwork by Sonia Delaunay

£14.95 ISBN 978 1 633 450240 June 40pp 30.0 x 23.5 cm Illustrated throughout

Sonia Delaunay: Art Is Life introduces young audiences to her art as Sonia and her six-year-old Charles embark on a magical road trip in their car. Together they glide into a landscape made up of colours and shapes drawn from Sonia’s early abstract compositions – almost as if they’ve entered one of her paintings. Along the road, they make pit stops at ‘sites’ that inspired some of Sonia’s key paintings of this period, and explore her gorgeous and colourful designs for fabrics and clothing. Through these encounters, Sonia helps her son understand her artistic process of abstracting from reality by asking Charles what shapes and colours he discerns within these subjects. Their journey ends back in the real world, and Charles realizes that his mother’s thinking about art permeates every aspect of their life. Cara Manes is Assistant Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art. Fatinha Ramos is an award-winning illustrator and visual artist.

Published in a limited edition of just 500 copies, Robert Rauschenberg: Thirty-Four Illustrations for Dante’s Inferno is a clothbound clamshell box containing a facsimile edition of Rauschenberg’s series of drawings from 1958–60, each reproduced at actual size on individual sheets. Rauschenberg made one drawing for each Canto, or section, of Dante’s poem The Inferno (1308–1321). Together they are a virtual encyclopedia of modern-day imagery, made by transferring photographic reproductions from magazines or newspapers onto the drawing surface. With additional imagery in pencil, crayon, pastel and collage, the drawings reflect Rauschenberg’s desire to infiltrate his art with the scenes and sounds of the surrounding world, a radical departure from the more transcendent ambitions of Abstract Expressionism. Leah Dickerman is the Marlene Hess Curator of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art.

Architecture

Frank Lloyd Wright Unpacking the Archive Edited by Barry Bergdoll and Jennifer Gray Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this catalogue reveals new perspectives on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, a designer so prolific and familiar as to nearly preclude critical re-examination. Structured as a series of inquiries into the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives, the book is a collection of scholarly explorations rather than an attempt to construct a master narrative. Each chapter centres on a key object from the archive that an invited author has ‘unpacked’ – interpreting and contextualizing it, tracing its meanings and connections, and juxtaposing it with other works from the archive, from MoMA, or from outside collections. The publication aims to open up Wright’s work to questions, interrogations and debates, and to highlight interpretations by contemporary scholars, both established Wright experts and others considering this iconic figure from new and illuminating perspectives. Barry Bergdoll is Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, where Jennifer Gray is Project Research Assistant.

Guggenheim Foundation. Central to Visionaries is the story of museum founder Solomon R. Guggenheim, who with support from his trusted advisor, Hilla Rebay, become a great champion of ‘nonobjective’ art and assembled a radical collection against the backdrop of economic crisis and war in the 1930s and ’40s. Alongside vibrant illustrations of works by such iconic artists as Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock, Visionaries also features essays by six curators examining touchstone works from the foundation collection. Renoir: Intimacy Contributions by Guillermo Solana, Colin Bailey and Flavie Durand-Ruel Mouraux The filmmaker Jean Renoir, son of Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, described how his father ‘looked at flowers, women and clouds in the sky as other men touch and caress.’ Impressionism is generally conceived of as purely visual, an optical exploration of light-dappled surfaces and shifting colours. Renoir: Intimacy instead focuses on the central role of tactile sensations in Renoir’s canvases. It reveals the ways Renoir made use of the tactile qualities of volume, material and texture as a vehicle to depict intimacy in its different forms – from social intimacy among family and friends, to the erotic – and how that imagery is viscerally connected to the sensuality of the artist’s brushstroke and the physical surfaces of his paintings. Published to accompany a show at the Museo de arte Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, this volume includes more than 70 works by Renoir, loaned from museums and collections worldwide. Guillermo Solano is Chief Curator and Artistic Director at the Museo ThyssenBornemisza. Colin Bailey is the director of the Morgan Library & Museum. Flavie Durand-Ruel Mouraux is Director of Archives at Durand-Ruel & Cie.

This book brings fresh perspectives on the works of celebrated modernists Georgia O’Keeffe, Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith, illuminating some of the artistic and cultural parallels and common themes between American and Australian modernism while exploring each artist’s unique contribution to international developments of modernism. While the artists developed highly individual styles, they are connected by their choice of subject, their experimentation with light, colour and form, and their commitment to presenting alternative ways of seeing the world. In considering their similarities and distinctions, this book will bring a deeper understanding of modernism’s dispersal and reinvention as it developed beyond the metropolitan wellspring of Europe. Lesley Harding is a curator at Heide Museum of Modern Art. Denise Mimmocchi is a curator in Australian art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Coinciding with a touring Tate exhibition of her work, this book is the first biography of the Turkish artist Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid (1901–91). A prominent member of the 1950s École de Paris abstract art movement, and praised by André Breton and André Malraux, she was also one of the first women to exhibit at London’s ICA. Her powerfully distinctive and energetic works reflect her conception of art as a ceaseless forward quest, driven by a spiritual inner need, to produce painterly renditions of cosmic journeys and psychic universes. Record-breaking sales at Bonham’s and Christie’s in 2012 and 2013 established Zeid as the best-selling Middle Eastern female artist. This book – which covers both her extraordinary peripatetic life and the evolution of her practice, as well as her reinvention in her eighties as a teacher – redefines her for the contemporary reader as one of the most important female modernists of the 20th century. Dr Adila Laïdi-Hanieh has a PhD in Cultural Studies from George Mason University in Virginia, USA. Gillian Ayres Foreword by Andrew Marr Martin Gayford and David Cleaton-Roberts This beautifully produced volume is the definitive monograph on an artist described by contributor Andrew Marr as ‘probably the finest abstract painter alive in Britain’. Now in her late eighties, Gillian Ayres has been celebrated for more than six decades for her use of vibrant colour and bold forms to create exuberant compositions full of movement and energy. Unconventional in life and in work, she has forged her own individual path regardless of fashion or opinion. Coinciding with a major retrospective at the National Museum Wales in Cardiff, this book spans her long career, from her student days to the most recent works. It includes all of her major paintings, and a dedicated section on her substantial body of prints. It also features many previously unpublished photographs of the artist in the studio and at home and other ephemera, making the book the complete word on this acclaimed and original artist’s life and work.

Tatsuo Miyajima is one of Japan’s leading contemporary artists, known for his immersive and technologically-driven sculptures and installations. Central to his practice are numerical counters that count from 1 to 9 repeatedly using light-emitting diodes (LEDs), then go dark momentarily. For Miyajima, the cyclical repetition of numbers, along with the shift from light to dark, reflect the importance of time. He draws inspiration from Buddhist philosophy, with its exploration of mortality and human cycles of death and renewal. This book accompanies ‘Connect with Everything’, Miyajima’s first major survey exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere. It encompasses key sculptures and installations from the beginnings of his career to the present, as well as video and performance works which have expanded his object-based practice over time. Rachel Kent is Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia.

Brian Eno: Light Music Brian Eno and Michael Bracewell This book accompanies Brian Eno’s recent installation ‘Light Music’ at the Paul Stolper Gallery in London. ‘Light Music’ used lightboxes to seamlessly phase through an infinite combination of seductive self-generated ‘colourscapes’ with a series of interwoven LED lights, each accompanied by a unique musical composition. Alongside the light works were two lenticular pieces, ‘Center Decenter’ and ‘Tender Divisor’, which used a medium by which lenses gave his printed image the illusion of both depth and the sense of animation. Here, numerous variations of the light pieces and lenticulars are reproduced together to create an artwork in itself, published for the first time in volume form. The works are accompanied by two specially commissioned essays by the artist and renowned critic and writer, Michael Bracewell. This large format book is in itself a masterclass in the power of sound and vision. Brian Eno is an English musician, composer, record producer and visual artist known as one of the principal innovators of ambient music and generative painting. Michael Bracewell is the author of six novels and three works of non-fiction, including Perfect Tense and England Is Mine.

On Kawara (1932–2014) is seen as one of the most important and most radical artists of our time. His art is consumed with time and place, concepts that he used to try and map out the meaning of human existence. On Kawara: 1966 focuses on Kawara’s creations from 1966, the year he began his world-famous date paintings: small paintings on which he inscribed, in white letters and numerals on a monochromatic background, the exact date of the painting’s creation. If a painting wasn’t complete by midnight, it was destroyed. The TODAY series, as the entire collection is called, comprises some 2,000 date paintings created in more than 100 different cities. The artist used a folder to record the days on which he created a painting plus its format, alongside a smear of the paint he used and the newspaper headlines for that day. The folder in which he documented his 1966 creations is fully portrayed in On Kawara: 1966. In 2015, Kawara’s date paintings from 1966 were displayed in the Dhondt-Dhaenens Museum in Deurle. This was the artist’s last project before his death in 2014. Jonathan Watkins is the Director of the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Passionate about designing buildings and neighbourhoods that quietly transform the urban environment, Torti Gallas is committed to improving the living conditions of distressed communities throughout the USA and around the world. Combining the disciplines of architecture, planning and urban design into a single practice, they have created a practice devoted to designing and creating the type of housing that brings catalytic change to urban neighbourhoods. Their residential commissions are not the ‘one-offs’ of elite houses, but the multiple housing forms – mixed-use apartment buildings, rowhouses, single-family homes – that comprise the fabric of a city. Torti Gallas’s architectural work is presented here in three main chapters: Buildings, Neighbourhoods and Places. These include a total of sixty built projects, as well as a sampling of current work. John Francis Torti, FAIA, is President of Torti Gallas + Partners; Thomas M. Gallas, CPA, is its CEO; and Cheryl A. O’Neill, AICP, is a Principal and Urban Designer at the company.

Peter Salter: Walmer Yard Peter Salter, Peter Beardsell, Mark Dorrian and Niall McLaughlin Photographs by Hélène Binet Peter Salter is an architect and teacher whose work has influenced several generations of students. Walmer Yard, in Notting Hill, is his first residential project in the UK and one of only a small number of buildings he has completed worldwide. Although modest in scale, the project is extraordinary in many ways. On an irregularly shaped site, Salter’s design brings four houses into a complex relationship with each other, half-formal, half-familiar, interdependent yet solitary. Similarly, the relations among the core team who developed the design are more nuanced than in most architectural projects, since they all met at the Architectural Association in Peter Salter’s unit, where Crispin Kelly (the client) and Fenella Collingridge (Peter’s current collaborator) were student contemporaries. This book documents the project with Peter Salter’s original pen-and-ink drawings and Hélène Binet’s extraordinary photographs.

Influenced by Dada, Constructivism and De Stijl, between 1910 and 1965 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created numerous montages and collages, all of which perfectly illustrate the design principles of his architecture. These works, most of them large-format, are far more than merely sketches bolstering his creative process as an architect: they are fascinating works of art in their own right, and demonstrate Mies van der Rohe’s structural vision in its purest form. Their abrupt changes of viewpoint, freedom from perspective, place and time, their montage of found elements and aesthetic focus on mixed media place him in the same historical context as artists and experimental filmmakers such as Kurt Schwitters, Theo van Doesburg, Hans Richter and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy.

Alcohol presents an exhaustive collection of previously unpublished, rare graphic Soviet anti-alcohol posters. It includes examples from the 1960s through to the 1980s, but focuses on those produced during the Mikhail Gorbachev campaign initiated in 1985. These posters attempted to sober up the Soviet citizen by presenting the anti-alcohol message in the most graphic terms. They depicted drunks literally trapped inside the bottle or being strangled by ‘the green snake’. Their protagonists are paralytic freeloaders and shirkers who drive under the influence, they are violent, black-marketeers and desperate cologne drinkers… A two-part essay by Alexei Plutser-Sarno explains, from a Russian perspective, the reasons behind this phenomenon. The eye-catching lenticular motion cover illustration depicts alcohol pouring into a glass head and the title changes from the English ALCOHOL into cyrillic Russian. Ideal for your friends and family who like a drink! Damon Murray and Stephen Sorrell have been publishing books on Soviet visual culture since 2004, with the release of the first Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia.

Master Works Rare and Beautiful Chess Sets of the World Edited by Dylan McClain Chess, one of the world’s most popular games, has inspired artists for hundreds of years. Though apparently offering a limited canvas – each set has 32 pieces, each board 64 squares – sets have nevertheless been designed in countless ways, using almost every imaginable material: from precious metals, to ivory and rock crystal. This book brings together some of the most beautiful and unusual chess sets ever made. Over hundreds of years, from five continents, they include 200 year-old sets made by nameless Indian craftsmen; sets by Peter Carl Fabergé; sets from Soviet gulag prisoners; and sets by leading artists of the 20th century, like Max Ernst. Each set has been specially photographed for this book, with insights provided by an exceptional group of experts: Dr. George Dean, Jon Crumiller, Larry List and Will Wiles, with an introduction by the book’s editor, Dylan Leob McClain. Dylan McClain wrote a chess column for the New York Times for over a decade before becoming an editor of World Chess, the company that organizes the World Chess Championship matches. He is a master level player.

The Wellcome Collection

42

Animal Vegetable Mineral celebrates the beauty and strangeness of the very early ‘infographics’, charts and ordering systems devised in an age that transformed how we see and understand nature. These are the tools created by pioneering European naturists, artists, housewives and explorers in the 18th and 19th centuries, in an attempt to better understand (and control) a teeming and shifting natural world: the original big data challenge. In a collision of science, art and imagination, these images and objects range from intricate specimen illustrations, taxonomy charts and animal distribution maps, to lavish colour dictionaries and more. Together, they attest to the deeply human desire to order and identify the world around us – and a restless quest to find our own place in it. Wellcome Collection is London’s free destination for the incurably curious. Tim Dee is a BBC radio producer and the author of The Running Sky and Four Fields, and co-editor of The Poetry of Birds.

Atget Postcards of a Lost Paris Benjamin Weiss Eugène Atget is best known as a chronicler of a romantic, if disappearing, Paris around the turn of the 20th century. This book presents a series of postcards depicting Paris’s petits métiers, or little trades, exploring another side to Atget’s oeuvre. More or less Atget’s only published works during his lifetime, the postcards capture the ephemeral nature of life in the city and are part of a long tradition of depicting skilled tradespeople plying their wares. In them, Atget presents the market stands, the odd jobs, the cobbled together shops, and the informal entertainment that gave Paris its piquancy and eternally renewing liveliness. Benjamin Weiss is Director of Collections and Leonard A. Lauder Curator of Visual Culture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Larry Sultan & Mike Mandel: Evidence Essays by Sandra Phillips and Robert Forth

£32.00 ISBN 978 1 942 884149 April 92pp 22.9 x 24.8 cm 86 illustrations

Distributed Art Publishers

In 1977, Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel sifted through thousands of photographs in the files of hundreds of American government agencies and other educational, medical and technical institutions. They were looking for photographs that were made and used as transparent documents and purely objective instruments – in short, as evidence. Selecting fifty of the best, they published them in a limited-edition volume titled Evidence. The concept for the book was clear: select photographs intended to be used as objective evidence and show that it is never that simple. Now an undisputed classic in the photo world, considered a seminal harbinger of conceptual photography, Evidence is nearly impossible to find. This reprint of DAP’s 2004 facsimile is being published in recognition of the project’s continued relevance, and contains the original book plus a newly commissioned essay by Sandra Phillips of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This edition also includes a new spread of images and a group of black-and-white illustrations selected by the artists from an archive of photographs that were not included in the original book. Larry Sultan’s work blends documentary and staged photography to create images of the psychological and physical landscape of family life. Mike Mandel teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Harraga Giulio Piscitelli • Edited by Giulia Tornari After the Arab Spring in early 2011, Giulio Piscitelli went to Tunisia to photograph the refugee camp of Choucha. There he met a smuggler and decided to join Tunisian migrants as they took to sea in search of a decent life. His images document the long waits before departure (spent in apartments managed by local mafia gangs who profit from the smuggling of migrants), the boat ride, the arrival in Lampedusa. An arrival, though, that does not signal the end of the journey. This reportage is the first to document what awaits the migrants – or ‘Harraga’, as they call themselves : the CIE (Identification and Expulsion Centres), the exploitation of workers in Rosarno, the Castelvolturno fields... Harraga is a testimony to the historical period we are going through, a visual archive that leaves an indelible mark in the mind and leads us to reflect on a phenomenon that has presented ever more tragic implications over the years. Giulio Piscitelli (b. 1981) has been working as a freelance photographer since 2012, when he won a scholarship from the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund to work on the project that led to the creation of Harraga.

Dmitry Konradt trained as a geologist and went on to become one of St Petersburg’s most famous photographers. After his celebrated black-and-white images of performers at the legendary Leningrad Rock Club, he switched to cityscapes and began working in colour in the 1990s. In his work Konradt seems to recall his first profession and everything he photographs – crumbling courtyards, fire-walls, playgrounds, makeshift garages and broken tiles – looks like the stratification of multi-coloured rocks. His is a St Petersburg of calm and peace, where nothing changes apart from the seasons. This book, the first monograph on the artist, contains 59 colour and 25 duotone reproductions of his iconic photographs of such Russian underground rock bands as Aquarium, Kino and Akuzion. This beautifully designed and illustrated bilingual (English/Russian) edition also includes articles by London art critic Alexander Kan and St Petersburg historian Lev Lurie. Dmitry Konradt’s photographs have been shown all over Russia as well as at White Space in London and the Huis Marseiille Museum of Photography in Amsterdam. Alexander Kan writes widely on art. Jens Olof Lasthein: Meanwhile Across the Mountain Pictures from the Caucasus Jens Olof Lasthein Meanwhile Across the Mountain presents Jens Olof Lasthein’s intimate, six-year project documenting the kaleidoscopic worlds that define the Caucasus. It includes the series from Abkhazia which won the Leica Oscar Barnack Award in 2010. In the Caucasus the concept of borderland gets especially vivid. Here Europe meets Asia and Islam meets Christianity; a myriad nationalities, languages and cultures live side by side. In spite of the unresolved wars and conflicts since the fall of the Soviet Union, people of the new countries and republics are still emotionally tied together by their common history. Jens Olof Lasthein’s pictures tell stories full of life from a region which is most often talked about only when bombs explode or border conflicts flare up anew.

Interruptions The Sápmi Volume Cooper & Gorfer

During a hard winter’s journey through Sápmi (AKA Lapland), artist duo Cooper & Gorfer interviewed and collaborated with Sámi women of various ages, staging and visualising their stories and circumstances. Cooper & Gorfer transformed their impressions into picturesque hybrid images; layer upon layer of symbolism and narrative blur the realism of the resulting photographs, which are at times broken into parts and rearranged into enigmatic, fragmented and exaggerated ensembles. Many of the portraits were photographed behind a sheet of glass, introducing a physical and permanent layer of disruption and interference. The theme Interruptions penetrates every aspect of this project, from the cultural and political interventions that have violated and shaped the Sámi culture, to the very personal ruptures of the women portrayed. The project allies these personal tremors with the political and cultural interruptions that still impact the Sámi identity today. Cooper & Gorfer are artists Sarah Cooper (b.1974) and Nina Gorfer (b.1979). They live and work in Gothenburg and Berlin.

Under Vancouver 1972–1982 Greg Girard David Campany Under Vancouver 1972–1982 is the first comprehensive collection of Greg Girard’s early photographs of Vancouver. The pictures form an unintended photographic record of a Vancouver that has all but disappeared, a port town at the end of the railway line filled with commercial fishing docks, cargo terminals, and bars and cafes for waterfront workers and sailors. Downtown pawn-shop windows display outboard motors, chainsaws and fishing gear. Wandering these streets, living in cheap hotels, Girard photographed the workaday (and night) world of the city where he grew up. These were made before Girard established a formal practice. They reveal an early interest in the hidden and the overlooked, the use of colour film at night, and the extended photographic inquiry of a specific place, all of which became signature features of later books such as Phantom Shanghai and Hanoi Calling. David Campany has received numerous plaudits for his photography writing, including the ICP Infinity Award, the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award, a Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, and the Royal Photographic Society’s award for writing.

Livraison No 4 explores private spaces, places of memory and topographies of the mind both photographically and philosophically. It tries to unravel what a ‘place’ actually is. Is it even possible to come up with a stable formula or definition of it? Or is what we understand as ‘place’ a much more haunting, elusive entity? The mix of images and texts that appear in this issue seems to suggest the latter. But as surely as night follows day, Livraison doesn’t limit itself to one form of expression. The secret personalites of some are perfectly complemented by the secret appearances of others. In Livraison No 4, 69 photographers, including Bela Borsodi, Helmut Lang, Sølve Sundsbø, Richard Burbridge and Viviane Sassen, manifest their visions of secret identities by using masks to conceal the real identity of their objects, create a sort of dualism, erase or enhance the person behind the mask and give birth to a new identity. Livraison is a book and magazine publisher. It aims to challenge the clear-cut boundary between commerce and high art, focusing on projects and processes rather than established auteurs and icons.

Ola Rindal: Paris Ola Rindal Following on from his two sold-out books Tokyo Flowers and Night, Light, this latest body of work from photographer Ola Rindal focuses on his adopted home town, Paris. It continues Rindal’s fascination with the blind spots of the urban environment, the things that are always there but tend to escape our gaze. This Paris exists in the real world, albeit at the edge of our field of vision. Vaguely familiar but not immediately recognizable, the side of Paris that come into view here is its non-places. We may encounter these blank or blind spots in any big city. Casually and fleetingly noticing their presence we seldom pay them very much attention. In Paris, Rindal turns his camera at these spots to get a grasp of what goes on there. What he captures is the daily struggle for survival waged by the city’s poor and fallen – the human collateral chewed up and spat out by the big city machine. This beautifully produced numbered artist’s book is published in a limited edition of 666 copies. Ola Rindal is a Norwegian photographer based in Paris.

From Brassaï to William Klein, here is a luxurious homage to one of the world’s most iconic subways. This ambitious work is a magnificent and charming hybrid: a history of the development of the Paris metro – long a cultural symbol of France, Art Nouveau and urban technological innovation – alongside a history of photography in Paris from the early 20th century to the present day. All genres and photographic practices are represented, from photo-journalism to street-, fashion-, architectural- and industrial photography. Many major figures of photography snapped the Paris metro, from the humanists – Doisneau, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Brassaï, Boubat, Izis, Kollar, Ronis and more – to photojournalists such as Robert Capa, William Klein, and van der Keuken, and their unforgettable work is reproduced here. Anne-Marie Garat is a French novelist. She won the Prix Femina for her novel Aden in 1992 and the prix Marguerite Audoux for her novel Les mal famées. Julien Faure-Conorton is a photography historian and curator.
